Since the 3600 regularly has sold for around $270, the real question is whether a B450 mobo is a bargain at $200. I'd say it isn't.

    • +10

110% correct. These "bundles" are the illusion of a deal.

    • +1

Best combined price on PC Part Picker is $525 delivered so it's pretty good price really. The Amazon price kept disappearing too quick.
The mobo is very well respected and worth the money I'd say but yes it was cheaper pre COVID

    • +1

like others, I agree. Although the CPU before the C-19 madness was around $270 ish (give or take) the mobo was about $170 - $180, so you are actually paying a bit of a premium.

Having said that, if you CBF, it's not a big deal IMO.

    Update:

Motherboard is $200 from Shopping Express eBay - using code 'PMON20' for eBay Plus Member

New Total: $475.53 (OP Deal is still cheaper, but not by much)

Would have been better if they didn't jack the price from $549.00, see ebay purchase history

      • +1

These eBay store are notorious for price-jacking prior to eBay Sale Promotion.

The Motherboard Links in my comments are also jacked up (All other sellers: ~$229)

        • +2

Nah it was $440 during the event too. They just jacked it after someone mentioned it in the comments of another deal

  • +1

Motherboard 'WAS' 160 from Amazon so there is still a little margin in this.

    • +1

Yes this board has been sold for under $200 on a number of occasions

      • +1

not in the last 4 months

People still buy MSI mainboards ? My final MSI was from AMD athlon era that killed bios chips if you changed too many options at a time. Anandtech has comments of bios problems still on similar board. Never again.

    • +4

its kinda like people with hard drive brands. they have 1 failed drive and swear off that brand.

I've always been a gigabyte motherboard guy but recently started aiming for asus. all the gigabyte stuff has been ok but from the other side of the fence, always liked the look and quality of asus.

My gtx1080 is an MSI only because i got it second hand as a bargain, and see a lot of good comments about their tomahawk gear but am happy with asus (for now!)

MSI seems to be one of the premium brands - the tomahawk stuff at least

      • I've had Samsung, WD & Seagate fail on me. Guess I should only stick to Hitachi.

    • +6

Msi make the best b450 boards at the moment.

In terms of motherboard manufacturing you can't write off a brand just because you had one bad experience, although I think like you and do similarly.

In the days of socket A, asus was king. In the days of P35 and P45 chipsets, gigabyte was king. For Intel 8th gen, gigabyte did poorly, for b450 msi are the best
You just gotta read widely and find out what is best.

      • I have the MSI Mortar MAX b450, it's a good board but takes like 17 seconds to post.

Also, finishing my last subject in an IT bachelor's and I cant get Wake On Lan working to save my life.

        • That seems a bit excessive but unless I'm misunderstanding you, how is the motherboard a factor when posting?

Shouldn't it be the speed of your ssd?

          • @KnifeEnthusiastBoi: Nah, once it finishes all the bios stuff, 6 seconds. But before that, it spends 17 seconds checking the ram, all the HDD etc, I've flicked all the fast start options I can find and my googlefu tells me I'm not the only one.

    • +3

Yes, people have been buying MSI motherboards in the 17 years since you had one

  • What gcard can fit with this bundle?

    • Case determines whether GPU can fit.

So any GPU will work on this bundle but your case has to have room.

  • +2

Not sure if this is good deal also because B550 boards are now out and basic boards can be had for $200 or less (not the same quality as the Tomahawk Max though). B450 value is questionable at this price. Also, most B450 boards cannot run RAM at 3600mhz, if you need it.

I am building a PC with a Ryzen 5 3600 and at the point of motherboard selection. What are people using for their builds?

    • +1

B450 boards are still a thing, particularly for budget builds. B550 wasn't released to replace B450 - it was more of a stepping stone to X570. There's a Hardware Canucks video that explains the whole thing pretty well. B550 boards are a lot more expensive than B450 and some mid-high end B550 boards are better than entry-level X570 boards.

I think B450 is still worthwhile if you aren't looking to overclock. You can get a reasonable B450 board for like $120. This deal isn't good value, though.

      • Yeah, I agree that B450 will still hang around for a bit, especially since they announced Ryzen 4000 support with future bios updates.

But I just don't think $200 on a B450 board is a good deal now that B550 boards can be had for that money. I admit I'm comparing Tier 3 B550 with Tier 1 B450 though.

I would consider a B450 for under $140 if it could do 3600mhz RAM (to match what I already bought). Found out later though that my 3600mhz CL18 RAM is equivalent to 3200mhz CL16 RAM. Doh! Would have made it an easy decision to go B450 with 3200mhz support and save some cash. Oh well. Hence why I'm on the look out for a well priced B550 board.

I was one of the people who bought for $439. Feel that’s the right price.

  • +3

Can't believe the neg, at this current time and economy, i believe this is a good price, though not the best. All the motherboards sold out and not in stock in the next 2 months…

    • Agreed it’s not the best deal but good right now considering motherboards are tough to get cheap right now

  • Any recommendations for a x570 board?

    • +1

most of good x570 boards sold out everywhere, centre has msi x570 ace for $619 free shipping,
or you can wait for the next 2 months for the new stocks.

  • MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX Is $215 delivered on Amazon Au, to be honest i prefer buying computer stuffs from Amazon … stress free easy return etc

    • How's your experience been with Amazon return compared to PayPal? PayPal is just so customer biased I love it when I bring a dispute to them. They always take your side (although i do always include too much evidence)

  • +6

People on this site are actually insane. They upvote the crap 1000MX3 deals at $340 when the unit was sold sub-300 almost close to half a year ago but the knock down this deal.

It's not up to you if this deal is worth it or not. Find a better deal or point to how you can get a better price. I would bet you can't get $10-$20 cheaper, even if.

This is a decent deal. Tomahawk Max is the best value b450 you can get and $200 is a decent price for it.
