What drives are inside them?
Reddit seems to indicate they are Barracuda ST8000DM004 (SMR) drives, so beware if planning to shuck for NAS use.
The ST8000DM0004 (Barracuda Pro 8TB) is not SMR according to https://www.seagate.com/au/en/internal-hard-drives/cmr-smr-l…
Edit: ST8000DM004 Barracuda (non-Pro) is SMR. ST8000DM0004 (extra zero) is the Pro, not SMR.
It seems this drive is the Pro.Further edit: Tweaktown state it's the Pro, but the photo shows it's the non-Pro ST8000DM004 which is SMR. Sorry for my confusion. I blame Seagate's awful model naming scheme. :)
I was gonna say SMR is terrible for a game drive.
Naming scheme is probably intentional so that you accidentally buy it. Now that the bad news has spread, no tech enthusiast wants an SMR and Seagate can't offload them fast enough.
Yep gonna pass on that then, and keep my amazon order for a 12TB.
Looks like a Barracuda Pro 8TB.
Looks like tweaktown made a mistake. View the full size photo of the shucked drive and it is a ST8000DM004 non-Pro.
You're right, that's a shame.
@ngengerous: That it is. SMR drives are painful to use even in external enclosures.
@ngengerous: Noob here, not planning to shuck. Is this fine for regular archiving?
@la838: I would say so. I wouldn't run any games/applications from it, but for purely storage, you should be fine.
I have shucked this exact model (STGG8000400) and found BarraCuda Compute 8TB ST8000DM004 inside.
Definitely SMR.. Damn Seagate…..
Shuckable?
I wanna know too.
Yes, SMR though
SMR has performance issues, even though I am not using it in NAS.
I will pass.Agree, hate SM
Yes, SMR though
Aww, shucks.
It means you can remove the hard drive from the case and use it as a normal drive.
Shipping to Tas: $20.42
Probably due to being
overseasoutside mainland :)and how much is the shipping to Mexico? (Vic)
Thats a decent price for an 8TB, however if people are wanting to Shuck im pretty sure these contain SMR drives.
Building a backup NAS - I'm pretty sure that SMR will be more than fine for archiving purposes. Cheers OP!
Including Australia Post shipping and 1% BS Tax it comes to $215.86.
Had one for roughly 5 years as a xbox games disk, it runs pretty good for smr.
I'd have better performance cutting a potato into a USB shape and plugging that in.
Edit: For all the negs I'm referencing SMR, not Seagate. Love me some Seagate.
got one when they 1st released for my XBOX , no issues EVER !!!
That's the cheapest I've seen for 8 terrabyte, makes ssd's look expensive.
How is mwave able to do that deal especially with free delivery.
Likely old stock bought in bulk that hasn't sold as its perceived (by the general public) to be only for the Xbox.
Not sure how HDD are old stock, they been going since the 1960's.
Joke.
I would assume this is just a normal drive under the hood, but has anyone tried this with a PS4? I just want to confirm I can format this and there won't be any weird background configuration that stops it from working with a PS4.
Thanks!
i thought its ps5
how about using it in NVR?
I got one of these for my mate a couple years ago and he loves it.
Just got Officeworks to price beat the offer.probably pre-formatted with related file system (I think it is exFAT) which you can do it anytime anywhere these days
dl
Besides the shell, what exactly makes it 'for Xbox?'
says xbox on box lol
Bloke the bloke that did the marketing at Seagate says so
Can I just use this as a normal HDD for my computer?
Would this run for PS4? I don't need 8TB, but I could use this for storage for my laptop and use my Ultra 2TB for PS4?
$25 per TB. Got 1. Thanks OP!

Price match with officeworks if you can find it in stock with local pickup and 5% off.
Been waiting for a Seagate deal, instant buy, thanks.
This one is $235 if you have prime:
https://www.amazon.com.au/Elements-Desktop-Hard-Drive-WDBWLG…
Not SMR.Note you will need a international adapter for power
WD will probably send you a local adaptor, I and others have asked and received.
But this is Seagate
@El Chyeah: I was replying to your reply to congo who was referring to a WD Elements.
@The Magic Pudding: Ah my bad
Just went to my local officeworks and got them to price beat this for $189.05
Really hoping this doesn't run out of stock before I can get to Officeworks in the morning
Bad luck…
I am seeing 299
Yea me too… expired?
Can this work on my PC and NVIDIA Shield?
I think so… but expired
Showing 299 now
Second this…
Was going to buy one and now the price is changed oh mannnnnnn…
FFS. Sold out while I was waiting for Officeworks to price beat it… Won't be such a stinge next time!
Lol same
If it happens in the middle of the negotiation, will they still beat it though? I got mine from OW earlier, and it took them about 15 minutes to get manager approval. I was worried this was gonna happen (sold out/expired during the price matching process).
I'm not sure. I stayed on the line but nobody ever picked up and the call just ended after a while haha.
Did you get it in-store or over the phone?
I was in store.
This product should be named Seagate 8TB USB 3.0 External Call of Duty HDD given how much space the game takes up
Got excited thinking it was a ps5
"While Promotional Stock Lasts". That was quick. Looks like they have stock to sell at full price still ;-)
I thought this was a PS5 for second.
dodgy company.
no phone number
charged my cc twice but no order listed on my account
avoid.they got back to me and all sorted.
Got my 1st one delivered today. The second one will be going to a family member for later collection!
It does have the SMR drive inside.
That's fine, it's intended use is for archiving, so won't be too much of a hassle.
Thanks to the OP. A bargain at just under $220 each, once delivered.
Missed it by that much,
Was just gonna post the same thing,
might wanna add that there's a delivery cost if you don't want to pick it up from NSW
