5 x TSA Approved! 4 DIAL Travel Luggage Lock
Ideal for air travel to protect your valuables!

TSA screens every passenger's baggage before it is placed on an airplane. While TSA technology allows the custom to electronically screen bags, there are times when the security officers need to physically inspect a piece of luggage. TSA has worked with several big companies to develop locks that can be opened by security officers using universal 'master' keys so that the locks may not have to be cut. The packaging on the locks indicates whether they can be opened by TSA.

I feel that anyone who encounters your baggage while it is outside your custody (i.e. during loading/unloading and while on the plane) and is the typical sort to be stealing from it (baggage handlers etc) would have access to these 'master keys', making your luggage no safer than if you didn't lock it in the first place?

This is something I've wondered about. Wondering what other people's opinions are.

Personally, I would rather not use a lock with a master key. I would rather buy generic ones and have them cut the lock.

Believing that someone won't be able to borrow and copy a master key or reverse engineer the lock is crazy. The prospect of being able to open so many people's bags is too tempting for this not to happen. Once this has been done, the keys to these things will be available to criminals. Then, if you use one of these locks, it looks worse when someone has their way with your luggage and then locked it back up again (whether it be to put thing into or take things out of your luggage).

I am talking extremes here, obviously the chance of someone paying attention to your luggage in particular is slim. But if you can afford a holiday, the cost of replacing a few locks on the 1% chance they'll be cut is no big deal? Why not just carry a few cuttable spare locks inside your luggage?

These are designed primarily for those planning to travel to the USA where the TSA will break open any luggage with a non-TSA approved lock. Outside of the US, you'd be better off with other locks.

Whilst the concern over criminals getting hold of the master key is a valid one, these locks will still thwart the opportunist thieves (unless you're using a zipped luggage). Besides, any hard-core criminals determined enough to steal from your luggage will find a way with any locks.

I'd be worried about paying something to this company. Never did get my father's day freebie or even a reply to the message I sent about it. Be warned!

It seems the message went lost too :)

      • Hey, I did. Never got a reply. Also posted on your Facebook. I also know of a friend I recommended who did not get freebie as well. Both got lost in the mail??? Funny, we never have any other problems!! Just warning others that the site is a bit sus.

      • I haven't received mine either until now, I have sent 2 emails, no reply.

      • Sounds like a business to treat with caution??

Master keys would make it out to the crims… Give me a good ol standard lock thanks.

I think the offer is quite good. If people are concerned about forgery then you can glue up/shove things in the key hole

It's probably worth noting that these type of things are (in the real world) pretty much useless! ;)

i saw a video a while back, where some guy was showing how any zipped luggage bag can be opened with a pen regardless of what lock is used. he just stick the pen in the zipper and is splits open and can be zipped back up. (not sure if it's the link above as cant see it)

but glad wrapping seems like a good idea if you want to make sure it's not tempered with.

    • yep, seen that video too! So I dont really trust locks anymore…may look into wrapping it next time

Offhand I cannot think of anything of great value in my checked baggage; if somebody wants to steal my socks and jocks that is fine by me - inconvenient but not the end of the world. For many years now I have used soft bags with no locks, only zips and have yet to have a problem. If a problem does arise i have travel insurance. In short, I see no need for these locks.

Personally I would lock/seal up my bags to my best ability, especially when travelling to Asia. Some countries have mandatory capital punishment laws for drug traffickers. Judgement is made on evidence found (ie. drugs in your bag) rather than proof of yourself carrying out the act (ie. you placing the drugs in your bag). The last thing I want is to be a victim of drug traffickers just because I haven't taken the effort to secure my bags. They can be anywhere in the airport, in and outside secure areas.

All they have to do is drop a little bag of ?? in your pocket and you are history over there.

        • Not exactly an everyday occurrence though is it? Take a certain ex-beautician out of the equation (IF you believe her) and I am struggling to come up with another instance. Did wonders for shrink-wrap services at airports though.
