I have one of these laptops. They are super light. Also, the G7 variety of the chip giving better onboard graphics.

    • Does it support USB Type-C PD charging?

      • +1

I've pulled the trigger on this one to replace an old and crippled Dell XPS 13 7th Gen. Went to a local HN and bought it outright.

Answering to my own question above: it does charge via type-c charging from my generic PD power brick, but it does NOT charge from my ZMI powerbank, which XPS 13 does. I suppose I'd need some sort of PD trigger if I want to charge from a powerbank.

Otherwise, having re-installed Windows 10 from scratch, my first impression about this Acer Swift 5 unit is quite positive. I especially like its matte touch screen. So far, all touch-enabled laptops I happened to own had glossy, reflective displays - always a big point of disappointment to me.

    • I'm trying to decide between this and the new Asus UX425. Can I ask how it goes for heat? I've seen some reviews that suggest it gets a bit warm under heavy load.

      • +2

With my typical use scenarios so far (coding, browsing, occasional movie watching) it barely gets any warm. It very rarely turns on the fan at all. It's worth mentioning this is running a clean up-to-date Windows with up-to-date Intel drivers and BIOS. I did clear the SSD before installing Windows (using a live Ubuntu USB stick and blkdiscard). So there isn't Acer crapware of any kind and I got all the drivers via Windows Update and Intel website.

Thanks so much, it doesn't sound like your usage is dissimilar to mine. I'll be wiping the drive and installing Debian on it and running windows in a VM. I've read Acer is one of the worst for crapware so I'll just need to suck the license key out first and do a clean install. Thanks again, I'll go and get one tomorrow.

@geosta: No worries mate. I haven't installed any heavy VMs yet, besides WSL2 with Debian kernel. That plus VSCode it handles perfectly.

@uk3000: Went and got one from JB last night (price matched HN), so light. Like, I'm really scared of putting it in the same room as my Dell XPS 15 because I don't want to fat-shame the Dell.

Love the keyboard (which is something I haven't said about a laptop keyboard in a long time) and it's very snappy. Even at full tilt it's very quiet (although the pitch of the fan is a bit shrill but I won't hear it very often).

Thanks for your assistance, very pleased with the purchase.

              • +1

@geosta: Glad you like it, it's a great machine isn't it! Now let's see how also durable it is :)

                • +1

@uk3000: Finally got Ubuntu all set up on it, runs like a dream (except the internal mic isn't recognised but that's not an issue for me). Was really very pleased to see that the IR cameras worked for facial recognition login/sudo use. Able to get almost full speed out of the GTX1080 in the eGPU enclosure. And the 1TB ADATA XPG NVME just flies in this thing.

Was really surprised by the internal structure, some interesting design pieces which they've included, presumably for rigidity and airflow management.

Thanks again for your assistance, absolutely brilliant machine.

                  • @geosta: Thanks for an update mate. I'm so far comfortable with Windows + WSL2 but I may switch to Debian soon.

  • how reliable are touch screens, do they fail or stop responding after like 2 years. Any experience.

How is this compared to the likes of MacBook air 2020, when it comes to similar pricing.

  • +1

    Amazon have price matched.

    • I just went to a local HN to get one, they seem to be well stocked. I did ask for the best price but was told they're unable to discount it any further by a single dollar :)

  • Stunning specs!!
