Free: "The Wiz" @ The Shows Must Go on (via YouTube)

220

After there is no musical (film) this Friday, unfortunately, but for a good reason, namely the George Floyd demonstrations, we will do it next week and match the situation with The Wiz Live! (The Super Soul Musical "Wonderful Wizard of Oz") and an all-black cast. This time it is an NBC production from 2015 with Shanice Williams, Amber Riley, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Uzo Aduba, Ne-Yo and many more. As always, it starts on Friday from 8 p.m. and the link disappears 48 hours later. The production received an average rating of 7.1 stars in the IMDB .

A bit more info re the show from whatsonstage.com:

It was watched by 11.5 million people when first presented, garnering a 91 percent response on Rotten Tomatoes.

Originally opening on Broadway in 1975 and running for four years, The Wiz has music and lyric by Charlie Small, Timothy Graphenreed, Harold Wheeler, George Faison and Luther Vandross, with a book by William F Brown. It was adapted for the big screen in 1978 starring Diana Ross as Dorothy.

Based on L Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , the piece follows Dorothy as she is whisked away to the land of Oz where she encounters a cavalcade of whacky characters.

  • Fair enough.

Do you know if Peter Pan is actually scheduled at a later date, or just skipping it entirely now? =(

    • I have been wondering about this too, as I was looking forward to it initially. So far no confirmation one way or the other.

It's on at 4am in case anyone else was curious about it

  • A recent episode of The Voice Australia 2020 Blind Auditions had a song from this musical – called "Home" sung by Johnny Manuel. Originally sung by Diana Ross in the 1978 movie.

Naturally, it piqued my interest – I wanted to see how it would compare with the one in this show, when I get to watch it soon. I have to say, the blind audition performance was really good. Linking it for those who might be interested.
