    These are hardly useable.

      that bad?

      • +3

Sadly. But at the same time it’s not a bad price. I’d buy one and give to the kids to pull their hair out over.

      • +2

Worse, this processor can't handle Chrome with more than 2 tabs open without bottle necking its CPU. Just stay away unless there's some uber lightweight Linux distro with touch support you can install.

        • are you sure? with 4gb ram? and the windows now can be upgraded to win 10.

          • +3

@CyberMurning: It’s horrendous haha. I bought one off marketplace, legit had it relisted 15 minutes later. I felt sorry for the poor soul that bought it off me.

          • @CyberMurning: Review here: https://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/pc-mac/tablets/surface-…

"I managed to undertake some light image editing in Photoshop CC 2014, which took around half a minute longer to export a high-resolution image - but it still did it. YouTube streamed 1080p video in the background with two browsers open without a hitch - it's only when you get to 10 or more tabs in each browser that windows begin to freeze and the operation begins to fall apart. It's worth remembering that we were sent the version with 4GB of RAM"

            • +1

@stewartedin: Maybe back in 2017 but running YouTube was next to impossible. Unless you liked 480p

              • +4

@dylanando: I don't know what you have installed on it. Bought one a month ago from JB at $200 (Last one). Thought I would have issues with it, so made them write on the receipt that I could return if performance wasn't up to my expectations.

Updated to latest version of Windows and have no troubles with watching YouTube at 1080p with 8 tabs open at the same time. The CPU is fine, what really slows it down is the low RAM and the eMMC rather than SSD.

But well worth what I paid for and my usage case which was for Youtube consumption. Much more so than my old iPad Mini 1 that I replaced with.

Don't expect to be doing multitasking with Photoshop or anything. But word processing, browsing Youtube, not a problem (At least for me).

Maybe a fresh install of Windows will help?

                • @exile: how about note takiing and drawing? got palm rejection, and smooth etc etc ?

                  • @CyberMurning: Keep in mind it doesn't come with a pen. Surface pens are like $139 so really not worth it. But I have a Bamboo Ink already so I've been using that. I haven't noticed any lags or issues. Palm rejection is about as good as my Lenovo Yoga X1. I take it to work for meetings now instead of the Yoga, since it's so light and easy to carry. Writing is smooth with no delays or anything. In general as you would expect with these specs, there will be some delay in loading apps etc, so don't go in with high expectations, which I didn't so was pleasantly surprised. Also, the battery life was much better than I expected, was getting about 7-8 hours on youtube (medium to low brightness). I did get the type keyboard for it, which was not as nice (Quality has improved so much with the newer ones. But can't complain as I picked it up for $20 on eBay new).

    • seriously?

NVM I was getting 403 forbidden on my wifi..

    yeah pass….
at $150 may take a punt but not this price

remember guys, save your $ now not the time to be buying without thinking

  • BNEactrader has these for $180 or so every once in a while which is the most i'd pay for one. I wouldn't say they are unusable, as a real basic spare tablet they are okay especially since they have a fairly nice screen. I also don't think you'd be able to sell them privately for that if it turns out you don't like it.

    • that 180 is second or refub, maybe? this 259 is brand new

      • Oh, so it is. My mistake.

        • its okay. i just wished 180 is brand new haha

  • Don't get mixed up with the Surface Pro
The Atom processers can't really do much this days

If you need a $250 laptop, your best bet is to dig around Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace for something second hand. I've bought and sold several very respectable machines in that price bracket, all with good batteries. As long as you factor in the cost of a new battery to your offer price, buy a good brand (not Acer!), buy something with an 'i3' CPU or better, no more than four years old and test the machine thoroughly, you'll more than likely do okay.

    • Lenovo x240 or x250 for examples that are very portable with an i5 and 8gb near this price range.

  • +1

to put in perspective, a xiaomi mobile at that price can load up more chrome tabs than this thing.

yes, small mobile screen, but at least you can watch videos with no lags.

source: I have the surface 3 i3 which chokes and lags on abc iview sometimes with 2 tabs. atom is worse off than the i3.

  • anyone tried loading Lubuntu or Linux mint on it ? may get a better result out of these.

    • or chrome

    • then whoever considering this need to ask themselves if it's worth buying $260 to put linux on it (facing potential driver issues) or maybe just get something else that they don't need to compromise or workaround for?

i'm sure a chromebook would be better optimised and requires less messing around for the average user than getting one of these and try to make it work with linux and keeping it patched up to date.

  • These things are quite slow these days as all the other commenters are saying.

I own a Surface Pro 2 (model before this one) and still use it occasionally - it's pretty pedestrian these days, but if you just want to perform basic tasks like email, word processing, watch a video or two, or even use Photoshop, this can handle it just fine. Just don't expect much more than that.

    • +1

dude, no. this one is the surface 3, not even the pro. lol.
it will perform worse off the bat compared to yours.

      • +1

Ah whoops, didn't notice it wasn't the Pro… In that case, ignore my comment!

  • I had a z8300 Chuwi little tablet/laptop and although it is not blistering fast, it was a perfect travel companion to browse the internet with the Windows experience. I didn't do much else apart from google chrome and spotify.

For 250, it is a fair price if you ask me. But school locker are a bunch of a**holes, I bought something from them once and they told me no stock, only to list more for a higher price again.

    I have one. My story;

    Ran ok with win8
    a couple of years ago
    Updated to win10
    still ran fine

    However

With the last year of updates to all the usual software it has really become a chore to use, even just as a browser.
I feel that higher network bandwidth availability, combined with poor code optimisation in both the software updates and current websites have really taken their toll on this once very usable piece of hardware.
I find now, opening sites like Carsales, this one or Youtube it feels like; type the web address, go make a coffee, come back and wait for it to finish loading.

It would be decent for some specific use cases (eg local network media consumption), but its definitely an 'I have one laying around, I wonder if it will do this?', not an 'I'll buy one to see if it could do what I need'.

FWIW my Samsung Galaxy Tab S (2014) is more usable and much quicker on your common like for like tasks than a Surface 3 running current version software (I'm well aware Android is not Windows and the shortfalls/benefits between using each).

Take your $200 and buy an android tablet if you want a basic boredom alleviation device.

  • How the School Locker managed to keep stock of that old model, was it possible to clear it up before the end of 2017?

    • +2

Not sure… Maybe they kept them in their lockers ….?

  • Anyone here put Chrome OS via project croissant into this machine?

So many bad reviews? I love mine, and here's my use case. I've got this exact model, bought in 2018 second hand and running Windows 10. Along with the surface pen and onenote I use it as a notebook, for all my handwriting e-ink activities. (Currently taking notes while doing an online course). I don't have the catastrophic load issues others have, it's still very useable. It's not my main computer, I have a separate laptop for daily driving, and on which I play online videos while using the s3 as a tablet taking notes. Size is also perfect for cbz comic books, basic browsing and above all as an OneNote notebook it's amazing. I like it so much that when MS announced the surface go, I was so pleased that they continued the line and would pick up a go when this dies. The 10inch size is nicer than sp, which I have also worked on through work. It's powered by micro usb, which I thought was very convenient once, but not so much these days.

    • So you don't have to go make coffee before website finishes loading?

YouTube video running fine in FHD /1080p?
