  • You effing ripper! I was just looking at one of these a few days ago and thought I'd wait and see if it came on special first. Thanks OP

  • Much difference to this one? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/538612

If you don't need the wifi capabilities?

    • -1

      They are the same model
      V3 has wifi
      V2 hasn't (Ethernet port only)

      • +3

        Incorrect -

V3 connects to Wi-Fi but only works as a hub for smart devices. The Wi-Fi model (Samsung SmartThings Wi-Fi) does that and also acts as a mesh Wi-Fi access point.

But yes, if you don't need the Wi-Fi access point then the V3 model is what you need.

        • Oh, thanks for clarification
Didn’t know the wifi one has mesh AP capability

  • This seems like a crazy price. If I didn't already have a Home Assistant setup, I'd jump at this.

One sleek hub is a lot simpler than my NUC running Docker with Aeotec Zwave and Conbee II USB sticks configuration. And this is a whole lot cheaper than that too!

Does this support Xiaomi zigbee devices ?

    • Kind of

    • With a third party device handler, yes. But the Xiaomi devices don't do proper ZigBee, so it's not 100% and there can be side effects.

    • Yes mostly but expect some initial flakiness and the need to pair them a few times before they stabilise. I have a lot of Xiaomi sensors set up with mine and also a lot of Samsung sensors. Xiaomi are awesome because they have excellent battery life and batteries are cheap to replace for most sensors. Samsung sensors use more expensive batteries that probably last less than half the time. But most of the time we're talking minimum 1yr lifespan.

The periodic 20, 30 or 40% off deals from RACV make it an excellent buy for the home starter kit. I bought two kits this way and the added bonus is that now my home wifi is meshed and has good coverage.

I started with using Samsung Smarthings (v2) few years back with XiaoMi devices
but its a hit and miss (sometimes it didn't trigger, and the initial pair up is a pain too)

Eventually I bought the XiaoMi Home Hub and it works much better

Now my smarthings hub is just sitting in my cabinet

      • Thanks you have saved me $83 :)

      • I was reading up about this and I think newer Xiaomi devices run on a newer version of ZigBee which is supposedly more stable but even then they run on different protocols so a bit flaky

  • I bought one last month for $120 🙄
This is a very good deal.

  • So what cool things can these do combined with a Philips Hue Hub? I find that WiFi sensors take awhile to relay i.e. door opens then a delay of two to three seconds before the lights turn on.

    • They work great with Hue bulbs without the Hue hub. There is integration available with the Hue hub as well but I dont have one.

I'd broadly reccomend smart switches (Nue/3A Smart Home make good Zigbee ones) over bulbs though.

  • Does it work with Tuya devices?

    • I dont know about Tuya specifically, as I dont have any, but there is loads of integrations on https://community.smartthings.com/

Its looks like they are ESP8266 based and you can re-flash them to firmware thats got good support.

      • Thanks! I've looked up the firmware flashing before but it looks like a bit of a pain to do (especially with so many devices in my home). Maybe I need to bite the bullet.

    • Yes but not directly. I have it set up via a virtual switch and Alexa as a relay to Tuya Smart Life. You don't need to own any Alexa devices, just install the app. IFTTT is dying so don't rely on it. Everyone is dropping their support due to costs that IFTTT are charging.

  • All the SmartThings sensors are on sale also.

  • I have one of these in a box but find all the cheap products are wifi enabled so haven’t opened it.

Might look at using it for mesh but already have good coverage.

    • Go for Zigbee devices instead of wifi. Wifi devices ootb normally go via the internet to China and back so there's an annoying delay. I changed one light to Samsung zigbee and use the Samsung Zigbee motion sensor to trigger it instantly. Also works when there's no internet connection as opposed to wifi devices. Main brands for zigbee lights and devices include Samsung, Philips Hue, Ikea and Sengled zigbee bulbs. Oh and Xiaomi but again note some flakiness.

  • Awesome deal! Thanks, grabbed one as was looking at this or a Hubitat, the discount made it easier (I know they're different and Hubitat allows more for offline)

  • +1

Tempting! I have the $50 RACV voucher from the SmartThings price/stock error a couple weeks ago, which when combined with the SAVE30 voucher would allow me to grab 3x motion sensors for $10. So incl. this, $93 for a starter-like kit. Hmm!

EDIT: My bad, can't stack SAVE30 and the $50 discount code.

  • 2 of these of tp-link deco M5 for mesh?

  • Do all wifi devices connect to this and then this connects to wifi?? Like instead of havin 20 wifi bulbs on my wifi network, will it just be the smartthings hub? Reducing traffic?

    • No, my understanding is this is a hub for Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. If you have wifi (only) light bulbs etc they still need your home wifi.

  • Best priced switches and sensors which work direct without needing handlers? Just spent all night fiddling with Xiaomi sensors and they're just not reliable with the hub

    • Samsung when on sale or via EPP. Price is ok considering they're multi function sensors.

      • Current price at JB looks ok then I suppose

Have you looked at ikea sensors?

        • The SmartThings sensors are great, what sensor are you after and what are you trying to achieve?

          • @LowRange: Just looking at some cheap motion sensors that are small.

Tried using smart things and aqara sensors and they're offline and flaky.

I know smart things will be reliable but wondering if there are cheaper options

            • @EnergicAU: I have not tried the Ikea motion sensors but i have read a number of complaints about them.

The SmartThings motion sensors are hard to beat at this price, they are excellent on batteries (which can add up if you get a cheap sensor that chews them) plus they have a temp sensor built in. This can come in handy for automations like if there's motion and the temp is <15c turn on the heater etc.

Also the SmartThings sensor has a magnetic ball and socket mount, which allows angling the sensor in all directions or even pulling it off the mount.

The Ikea signal repeaters are excellent, but i'd stick with the ST sensors.

              • @LowRange: Thanks. Went to jb today and whole of WA out of stock on the sensors.
Put in an order instead and not sure how long

  • Looks like they have updated the website -> cannot purchase online anymore

  • The sale is still running, they are out of hubs and many of the sensors.

I managed to snag a couple of SmartThings wall plugs but they are now gone from the site again.

    • How much you bought the smartthings smart plug from JB?

      • +1

With the sale they were $34 but the normal price was $49.
