They're announcing new releases 6 weeks beforehand, then giving them away free for a day? I don't understand the motive, but I'm loving the free games.

    • +6

Want to be the next steam platform.

      • +18

" I haven’t heard anything about this game" but "It’s probably not a good game"…

        Makes perfect sense!

          • @Bissy: That is a terrible reason to give the game away for free. A previous game got mixed reviews so let's give this one away for free…

            • -1

@brotherfranciz: I know my opinion is terrible. But I'm just pointing out this because why would you give away a brand new game for free? The Developers Creative Assembly probably know its not that good, so to bulid up hype they are giving it away for free. They will most likely take the Epic games money and make Warhammer 3. Also there is no gameplay at all for this game, how do we know what the quality will be. I'm not saying what they are doing is bad, I'm suggesting why they might be doing this.

              • @Bissy: Could also be releasing for free because it's a good game and people who then play it will say as such, yielding more sales in the end…

                • @Snorkel2226: They definitly could be releasing a good game. It's just that they haven't released any gameplay at all. They normal do for their other games, so I thought it was odd they haven't for this one.

                  • +1

@Bissy: SEGA is making major money from EPIC games from this title. Then they'll also make money from the additional DLC sold for this game by players who indeed play it. DLC is always a major part of the Total War franchise. They'll make their money and then some. This is a smart business move.

                    • @Wickzki49: I 100% agree for both SEGA and Creative Assembly this a win. I'm not same its bad that they are moving to Epic games store, its just that I don't think the game itself will be as good as their other games.

              • +1

@Bissy: They are giving a brand new game away for free for the first 24 hours on release day. A game that will be exclusive for a year. Even if the game is bad, it's still a good thing but the total war games are an award winning series.

The previous game Thrones of Britannia got lower reviews than their previous games because it hadn't changed all that much in regards to the prior game which was good. It was basically Atila reskinned with vikings.

Troy is being made from the ground up on an upgraded engine. They are doing this to be nice as the game will most likely retail for around $80AU+ as even Britannia is still $60 AU.

      • Generally positive reviews so far so "it's probably not a good game" looks to be a bit premature

      • First review: "an unsurprisingly excellent total war game"
        https://screenrant.com/total-war-saga-troy-game-review/

      • Seems you were Epic-ally wrong.

    • -2

      it's obviously throwing a bone to a dog…

unless you can finish the game in 24 hrs and move on hence never look back…

      • Wot?

      • +4

Its not a free 24 hours. Its to claim forever within a 24 hour period

        • +1

I have realised that after I re-read it last week…

my first thought is that you can only play for 24hours then done… want to continue then buy it.

          thanks for reminding it again

  • +10

I predict website/client breakage of Epic proportions.

And I'll be doing my bit.

  • +16

Waiting on Lysander's comment about losses to the game developers and such

      • -1

Neg away. The truth has always been unpopular.😂😂😂

        • +6

          Why the negs?
Lysander is right (ok the tone is a bit harsh, but he's still right)

      • +1

Does it matter in this case though? The game is free on release day and if you had it pre ordered you would be silly not to cancel it. It's not like they wouldn't advertise it being free on release as well so I don't see it doing any real damage to their bottom line.

        • -2

In this case it is good for their bottom line as Epic pays the developer for that one day free.
What I am referring to is entirely different - if somehow someone discovered a way to get the game free from 10 August or until 17 August and this was posted here it would negatively affect the bottom line as Epic pays only for one day. Of course it would depend on who is at fault but publishing illegal and unintentional unofficial leaks always has an adverse and negative effect on one or more parties.

          • @Lysander: I really don't think that's the case.
I wouldn't buy this game, but hell if I'm not going to get it for free and make Epic pay for me. Plenty of others will do the same. Meanwhile those that were going to buy it and miss out on the freebie (where Epic pays for them) will eventually buy it anyway…

            • -1

@Singu1arity: But it all depends on the price.
Buying it eventually could mean for $5 or less. If Epic pays them $10 now it makes a lot of difference. Plus the Epic money they will have now rather than in a distant future.
Also, there are people -obviously different to you and me- who will buy this game the day or week it comes out. Having "illegal" extra free days then will definitely affect the bottom line.
Finally, I truly believe that it is not okay to take someone's labour or product "illegally" for free. If it is your product or labour YOU get to decide when you give it away for free and not a hacker or anybody else.
I guarantee the people saying it is okay wouldn't like it and would be very upset if it was done to them.

              • @Lysander: Sorry I don't think I'm getting the "illegal" extra free days part… what do you mean?

    • +2

Play nice folks. We're here for the bargain love. Leave the fights for other forums.

  • +2

Isn’t is a new game? How do they make profit?

    • +11

      Epic pays them for it.

      • Does EPIC pay them the full price? MSRP?

        • +2

Companies can't and don't give games away without the prior approval of the devs. Devs need to pre-appprove/sign off on things like that. They would have made a deal with Creative Assembly so they are still getting paid.

      • +4

Games aren't that profitable. 99% of the $60 will be gross profit, but the net profit will be far far less.

        • Considering the size of groups for video games now, I'm surprised the price hasn't increased.

I wonder if the amount of buyers is greater than inflation over the last 20 years, and how many units need to be sold to make the same profit as games in the late 90's/early 2000's.

          • @Salmando: Games are going up in price a little bit with special editions and some companies are trying to increase the base price as well.

The size of the market has increased a huge amount though, that's where a lot of the growth has come from. For example, Mario Kart 64 sold around 10 million copies, while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch sold 26.7 million copies, despite being a remake of an older game.

Interesting tactics by Epic. Getting bolder with every move!

  • +2

Why could they have not done this for Three Kingdoms instead? That looks more interesting.

  • Unbelievable.

  • +5

Wow Epic are pulling out all the stops now. I'm pretty sure they're going to pay us to use the Epic store at some stage.

    • Not a bad strategy

When is Cyberpunk 2077 going to be free on Epic?

Woohoo epic games is on a roll.

I was just picturing your comment with the sound from the "Paw Patrol Theme Song"…Bloody kids have it stuck in my head

  • better set a reminder or i'll likely forget by then :)

  • +8

No way… Wow Sega has never moved Total War on anything but Steam. This is massive and its free. Holy Sh** thats generous of Epic.

  • +3

This freebie might be 'special' - it seems it must be downloaded in the first 24 hours so you get to keep it for free.
At least that is how Kotaku Oz reports it:

"Having previously been a series that we first associated with DVD drives and then Steam, the next release in the Total War series—the spinoff A Total War Saga: TROY—is going to be a 12-month Epic Games Store exclusive. And it’ll be…free?

At least initially. Anyone downloading the game within the first 24 hours of it appearing on Epic’s store will be able to keep it without paying a cent. Which is certainly a unique way to try and “sell” a game."

    • Lots of people now buy games after seeing streamers play them, this will guarantee it gets a fair bit of airtime for days after the first 24 hours.

  • Any idea what the gameplay will be like?

    • -3

You may or may not have heard of an indie website called YouTube. It has the answer you’re looking for.

      • I'm probably gonna get downvoted, but there is no gameplay for this game.

        • No you’re right. Not actual gameplay but a rundown of what to expect:

          https://youtu.be/bCPNcjI2xzo

          • @Cineaste: Yeah I hate these types of trailers, no game play insight whatsoever, which is to be honest, the most important aspect of a game, not its story.
If I wanted to watch a movie, I'd watch the movie TROY, which I have many time before.

            • @zennow: The video I linked isn’t a story trailer.

              • @Cineaste: My bad. Still there's little details about the game play there. OH wells, we'll wait and see. Cheers.

                • @zennow: They released gameplay, here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaOUxusiV5Q

                  • @Bissy: Cheers. Looks awesome. Hopefully it holds true and not just cinematics.

                    • @zennow: It's like asking how a GTA game plays. They play the same but are set in different times and locations with new additions and improvements each game.

The Total War series are real time strategy games. Go watch other Total War games for example Three Kingdoms (China), Shogun (Japan), Thrones of Britannia (Britain), Warhammer (Fantasy) etc.

Then know that this will play the same but being the newest in the series, it will have improvements and being named Troy it will be set during the Trojan War.

  • Lots of free games from Epic games, whats the catch they sell you your personal data?

    • +4

not necessarily. the main thing they want to do is get people to jump off the Steam bandwagon, as many gamers have been VERY reluctant to use a different platform.

      • I haven't bought much off Steam so I'm happy to jump

        • +1

well, there you go. Epic's marketing strategy clearly works. ;)

          • +2

@osaya: You're not wrong. I was exactly that. Very reluctant would be an understatement. Openly hostile. Now? I'm indifferent and I pickup every free game they put out. My Epic library rivals my Steam library… I guess they won me and a lot of people over.

            • @Valowick: hey, free is free! ;)

            • @Valowick: Also browsing through the epic store is just so much nicer. Every game is a real game and I can actually find cool games I've never heard of before.

      • Certainly gaining more people. Not sure they are taking many Steam customers so much as sharing them. Will there be enough cake to go around?

  • I've honestly ignored all the other free Epic games but I'll sign up for this.

    • There's been some excellent freebies recently

  • +3

Three things I expect from this game:

    1. An epic fully animated duel between Achilles and Hector just like the duels from Three Kingdoms.
    2. An incredibly detailed city of Troy with multiple interlocking walls, defenses, and breach points including possibly multi-phases of the siege battle.
    3. One horsey boi.
  • Another reminders. Thanks OP.
