Plants @ 1 $ per sapling, Masters hardware in Braybrook, Victoria

We went to the first Masters Hardware store last weekend and the wife went crazy over the 1 $ vegie saplings.

They are small plants max about 10 - 15 cm tall and are all selling for 1 $ only. last time we bought these from Bunnings and Kmart Gardens they were all 3 to 5 $

There are many varieties @ 1 $ we bought lots of different Tomatoes (Roma and others), Silver Beet and some others I don't remember.
Sorry I am not very wise in garden matters but many different plants were for 1 $ and slightly larger or more mature plants were from 3 $ upwards.

  • Do Bunnings price match?

    • -1

Bunnings will price match advertised prices, which this isn't.

      • I've had them do 10% off competitors price before that were not advertised. I just told them the store & their price, the checkout person had to ring them to confirm.

They don't have to be advertised prices - any item that is in stock at a competitor is fair game.

"If you happen to find a cheaper price on a stocked item we'll beat it by 10%*"

Asking for a price match at our local store though is asking to be treated like a criminal. They could do with some lessons on customer service.

  • Sounds like a good deal, but a bit too far to travel for me to fill up the kitchen herb garden.

It's hard to comment precisely on the plants you saw last weekend, but I also have been to the Masters store in the past few weeks and I didn't think those $1 seedlings were particularly good value for everyone. I think the target audience is for someone in an apartment with limited space, growing stuff on their windowsill or balcony. Those people with gardens that can accommodate more plants may gravitate toward the punnets of 4 seedlings for $3 ($0.75 each), I imagine.

    • As I said before my friend, I am not the gardening expert but my wife "supposedly" is

What I can confirm is that for similar sized seedllings Bunnings in Hoppers Crossing are charging 4 $ + . So we bought a few different varieties. Bunnings might pricematch , worth trying since they do have a policy for the same. But this is not an advertised / catalog item.

The Tomato sapling look alright, a few of these actually came supported on those litle sticks so they are pretty big, and knowing tomatoes from previous experience they spread like crazy, we had some last time around and they took up a lot of space when let to grow on the ground. Ofcourse giving us plenty of tomatoes for a full season.

I planted many of these , will report in a few months if they were any good :-)
