G.Skill Flare X 3200MHz 16GB (2x8gb) CL14 Kit - $156 Delivered @ Shallothead eBay

690

G.Skill F4-3200C14D-16GFX

Have been looking for a fast RAM kit that is B Die for a good price for a while. Was about to buy from UMart for $228, did a quick ebay search and this came up.

Cheapest B Die kit with fast timings I could find!

Update: The kit has been wrongly advertised, and is infact non B-Die and CL16. Bit dissapointing that Shallothead has shipped them out anyway and not letting the buyer know offering a "$10 discount" and stating "They are not that different"

    Needs storename in the title

    • +3

Which, for those playing along at home, is "shallothead".

      • +2

Wasn't sure if it was needed for ebay or not - Have ammended…

      • +1

I bought an SSD from shallothead earlier this month. Postage was quick (arrived quicker than the PC it went in) and I haven't had any issues with it at all.

  • +2

looks like Samsung B-Die which makes this a fantastic deal, excellent for overclocking!

    • 3466 14-14-14-14-28 with 1.45V all day every day if your mobo is up to it. my x470 system, no problems. my x370 box, not so much :)

      • X370 all around was funky with ram. Took me a while to get these working at the right speed on even my cross hair.

      • Do you have this RAM with your x470? I have ROG Strix x470-F Gaming board with ryzen 2700x. But some times get BSOD stating memory management.
        I am using G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Desktop Memory Model F4-3000C15D-16GVRB
When I check it in CPUZ - Memory page states: 1064 MHz.
Checking if RAM has something to do with screen flickering I am having with my 5700xt

        • Have you tried running memtest86?

          • @Jenny Death: Nah.I have inbuilt memory testing and didnt have any issues.

      • I'm wondering, what quantifiable difference does this make over 3200 MHz CL16?

        • +2

Zero at most or placebo effect for some.

In human terms no perceivable difference at all.

  • How does this compare to the CL16 version?
    https://www.umart.com.au/G-Skill-16GB--2x8GB--F4-3200C16D-16…

    • +2

In real life, there won't be any discernible difference. But if you're a hardcore overclocker then these sticks are better

      • +1

or if you dont want to overclock but want quick timings out the box… I have these.. they are great and this is a great price I might pick up another set.

    • +1

if you're on a ryzen CPU and makes a reasonable effort at tuning (aka just using 1usmus' safe timings), you'd likely see about 5% fps gain on average. i'm extrapolating from my "CL16" kit which defaults to CL17-19 without manual timings…

  • +1

    Good for ryzen?

    • pretty sure the flare x series was built for ryzen

      • Flare x is usually expensive isn't it? All I got are ripjaws.

    • It's great for Ryzen. Should overclock really well too, which you might as well do cause it's B die and Ryzen loves RAM frequency.

    • +1

Excellent for Ryzen, got them in November 2019 and doing well on X570 + 3700X and X570 + 3950X. OC'ing the 3700X works super well with these - solid at 3466 @ 1.4v.

  • +1

Wow, good price. I paid 320 during the ram shortage of years ago for this kit. Not sure if I really need the extra kit though.

  • -4

Cheaper to get the 3600Hz on Amazon.

    • linku please?

        • +1

          This isn't B-Die.

          • @Shrew: For people just using it at rated specs and not OC'ing it doesn't really matter though, at least for a current-gen AMD CPU or really any-gen Intel CPU.

            • +1

@MHLoppy: 3200C14 will be significantly faster than 3600C18 even if you're not overclocking.

              • @Shrew: Not really relevant now that it's OoS, but I'm not convinced there's enough of a performance difference to justify the price increase: https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/3508-ryzen-3000-memory-be…

In those tests 3200 C14 is marginally worse than 3600 C16. Based on that and the other data I believe it's reasonable to say that 3200 C14 would get only ~2% extra performance over 3600 C18 tops in typical tasks, which I firmly disagree counts as being "significantly faster".

$10 per 1% performance increase isn't good value unless you're already at the higher end of the performance spectrum, as it'd take $1000 to double system performance.

  • Awesome price OP, thanks!

  • 3600 CL18 or this 3200 CL14

    • +2

      3200 CL14 easy

      • I know going by reviews that 3600 CL16 is faster.. because ryzen zen 2 cares more about memory speed then latency.

        • You can overclock the RAM

        • +1

You should be able to easily overclock the 3200c14 to 3600c15
The 3200c14 kit uses the best quality memory chips on it, they're renowned for overclocking potential.

  • +1

For comparison, this is ~$250 at PLE. I paid ~$200 at the end of last year for this kit.

  • I got these back when gen 1 ryzen launched. Would it be a bad idea for me to pick up another set to bump up my 2x8gb cl14 flare X to 4x8gb on my ASRock x370 taichi + 1700?

    • +1

I'm wondering the same - if you don't do anything that requires large amounts of memory (content creation, virtualisation), you probably won't see much benefit.

    • +1

You would still be running in Dual Channel due to the memory controller. If you are only running a 1700, 4 sticks or RAM would put more stress on the IMC, and you may not be able to achieve 3200 CL14 with all four sticks. This is not an issue with the Ryzen 3000 series from 3100 and up. With a Ryzen 3900x I was able to push these sticks to 3600 CL15 with tight timings.

      • What if upgrade the 1700 to a 3700 or higher? Or would I be better off upgrading the 1700, x370 and new/faster ram?

        • Moot point anyways, OOS.

        • With Ryzen 4000 series on the horizon, I'd hold out a little longer tbh.

          • @scrimshaw: Unfortunately they would also need to upgrade their motherboard because AMD is not supporting the 4000 series on X370.

        • +1

If you are mainly gaming, the extra 16Gb of RAM would be of no benefit to you. It would better spent on upgrading your CPU from the 1700 to a 3700x. Please also check how well optimised the BIOS on your X370 Taichi is for the 3700x. You will probably need to double check you have the latest BIOS, and check any forums to see if there are any issues with the X370 Taichi and Ryzen 3000 before making the move.

  • I bought the C16 version at around $110. Mine is c-die, can only be overclocked to 3466mhz.

  • Does anyone know how reputable shallothead is? I'm seeing the CL16 for the same price and FUTU listing of the CL14 version is a big difference

    • Same company as futu = Shopping Express.

  • argh, i turn my back on OZB for a minute and the exact RAM i want comes up and then sells out.
If anyone who bought wants to sell, i've put up a wanted in the forum classifieds

    • I was going to buy some myself but looking at reviews 3600mhz CL16 is the ram to get.

3200mhz CL14 is slower in every benchmark

There was 20 in stock when i came here.. didnt buy any :)

      • You're meant to overclock this particular kit. 3600 cl 15 with tight sub-timings will be a walk in the park. And if you really want to flog these, take a look at the various overclocking forums to see what they're capable of.

        • +1

          I have a MSI B450 Tomahawk max with a R5 3600 and a MSI B450 Mortar Titanium with a R7 3700X

Overclocking or changing timings on ram is horrible… Countless failed boots requiring bios flashbacks on a range of sticks

NO THANK YOU. you are giving newbies REALLY BAD ADVICE! … and not all boards have bios flashback or an easy way to reset bios to default.

I've been overclocking since 1998 starting with the Celeron 333Mhz. loved the Athlon Thunderbird 700Mhz. .. RAM overclocking has to be the most annoying hands down.
Setting XMP settings and then just leaving the ram as is for rock solid reliability is the way to go. Random PC reboots are not cool when you care about losing work.

A faster CPU or graphics cards will always result in better performance then faster ram and overclocking those will also provide the largest boost.

          • @vid_ghost: I'm not giving anyone specific advice - not sure where you pulled that from. The context of me saying 'walk in the park' is that these scale very well and safely with voltages up to 1.5v for daily use (if you have some airflow going over the ram). Of course overclocking has complications and this goes without saying.

The people who are interested in this specific kit are likely the people who are into overclocking. If you don't care, you're not the type to notice the benefits and should just stick with cheaper $100 3200 cl6.

A faster CPU or graphics cards will always result in better performance then faster ram and overclocking those will also provide the largest boost.

Yep agree, except you're the one who said "3200mhz CL14 is slower in every benchmark".

            Have a good day brother.

  • I was on checkout page and was like

"Hm there's more than 10 left. Maybe I'll order it after I finish ma laundry"

and few minutes later it's all gone…………………………..

  • damn, gone

    • Gone gone gone…i missed out too :( been waiting and looking

      • Get the 3600 instead

  • I think it's still in stock. Even though the ad's title states CL16, in the description it's 14-14-14-34, still at $156.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/G-Skill-Flare-X-16GB-2x8GB-DDR4-…

    • Yeah I just purchased a set for an R5 3600 on an MSI Mortar Max. Wondering if I should get a second pair? Photoshop is the main ram hog in my usage.

Was going to wait for B550 but with the news this morning from AMD decided to jump on a good 450 board before stock or pricing comes under pressure.

My local Umart shows the Mortar Max as 2 days out vs 6-7 weeks from centecom.

      CL16 vs CL14, much of a difference?

    • +1

I just bought some but can't help being a bit nervous as the description in the title says "G.Skill Flare X 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL16 Desktop AMD Gaming Memory RAM Kit " but the Item Specifics says "MPN: F4-3200C14D-16GFX". I'm hoping it's the latter :)

  • +1

It looks like the original eBay listing was wrong as the eBay product link now shows up as the CL16 version.

  • +1

Will be interesting… My order has just been shipped, if it's not CL14 I'll be requesting a refund for misleading. Not a bargain at $156 for cl16

    • Yep, mine just arrived and it's cl16 :(
I've sent the seller a message to see what they say but I will be requesting full refund as it's not a deal for cl16.

      • Seller offered $10 partial refund.

        • Yep offered me the same or to return it for a full refund, which I will do. Even for $146 this isn't a great deal.

  • Yeah I hope not, but it kind looks like it's actually CL16, and seller has mistakenly using the wrong copy-pasted images in the description :(

    • +2

Can confirm its CL16. Just got an invoice from the store stating so. :(

      • aww lame, always too good to be true. submitted a return even though it hasn't arrived yet heh

        • They have offered $10 partial refund lol.. Not sure if I should keep it or not. Any other recommendations for ram to suit my ryzen 3600?

          • +2

@NachoCheese: They sent me this reply "If you would like to keep it, we can offer a partial refund of $10. Otherwise I can arrange a prepaid label and get this one back." and I replied back to them "So you shipped it knowing it was the wrong product? I'm going to make a complaint to Ebay about your conduct."

            • @PKM: "Hi,

              Thanks for the email

Looks like this one is a listing error, there is not much difference between CL14 and CL16 memory

If you would like to keep it, we can offer a partial refund of $10. Otherwise I can arrange a prepaid label and get this one back.
              .
Please let us know and we can arrange ASAP.

              Kind Regards,
              Steven."

              Lol

May not be a big difference in speed between cl14 and CL16 but the price difference is.

              • +3

@NachoCheese: This mob need to be banned from Ebay

        • +4

mine just arrived, it's the C16 :( if it was $100 i'd probably keep it, but 156 is kinda normal for this kit, so back it goes

big brain moment: the return satchel they put in the box is way too small to fit the ram into…

      • +2

I just checked the Ebay listing and they still have the CL14 part number and timings. This is real dodgy behaviour. That's why I normally prefer Amazon for this kinda of stuff.

        • +2

Marketing scam. People buy it then they offer $10 off.
Once you have the product in your hands, you're more likely to keep it.

  • Whats the best offer then for CL14?
Amazon has it for $202 delivered with Prime eta June 2.
Is it worth the extra $46 on a b450 board??

  • +1

Just return it and get this instead https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/g.skill-ripjaws-v-16g… free shipping, unless this Flare X is B Die and is a good OC but memory OC is pretty difficult.

Edit: The Kit I received is F4-3200C16D-16GFX not Samsung B Die and overpriced.

  • Yeah its CL16 oh well just return it.

  • Very generous to offer a $10 discount when they dropped the price by $11 overnight!

  • Now they've changed the listing… Back at as CL14 and $265 price. Pretty sad on Shopping Express's behalf.

  • +1

I also got a CL16 kit and returned it. Spoke to an eBay agent about this being a lie, and they said they'll investigate the seller. Hope they get a stern warning so they don't try this again in the future.

    • Very poor form on their behalf - if I wanted the kit it actually was I would have picked it up locally for $30 less. You would of thought alarm bells would have rang after they sold 50+ kits in one night… but no, instead they just changed the title and only and continued to ship out the products anyway.

      Not happy.

  • Glad i returned it as decided to go with trident neo instead for 3rd gen OC

  • Another can confirm it is CL16 will be sending it back. an alarm bell went off when I noticed one of the invoices that came through actually said CL16 but the listing was CL14.

  • +2

I also received CL16 today. I dislike this waste of time and run-around :(

    • I just got a postage paid return label sent to me within 24hours, sucks but at least we know its costing old mate Jason money, I would say it was an honest mistake but judging from a few earlier replies it seems they knew what was up and could have sorted it out before sending the product out.

  • +1

I also received the CL16 - very disappointed, will be returning it

  • Also received CL16 RAM. The seller has not responded to any of my messages in over 2 weeks, not even the return request. Lucky I have eBay Plus so I get an automatically approved refund.

OzBargain should ban this seller, they're scammers.
