I was debating between this Alienware M17 R2
9th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-9750H
Windows 10 Home
NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2070 8GB GDDR6 with Max-Q Design
16GB DDR4 2666MHz ( soldered, cant upgrade later)
512GB PCIe M.2 SSD and HP OMEN by HP 17-cb0061tx.

The one has much better design and looks elegant. However, cost much more $3,439.00 ($3060.71 after cashback)and the GPU is MAX-Q

,Whereas The HP Omen is much cheaper and GPU is a full one, not MAX-Q (confirmed with HP already)
$ 2,999.00 -%10 coupon (NATION10%) - $150 cash giftcard - 9% cashback = $2279.09

Intel® Core™ i7-9750H processor
Windows 10 Home 64
17.3" diagonal FHD IPS anti-glare micro-edge WLED (1920 x 1080)
512 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD + 16 GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM (1 x 16 GB) - I know,single-channel but hey, you can upgrade later
NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2070 (8 GB GDDR6 dedicated)

Took me 1 week and I decided to pull the trigger on HP OMEN, the price and the performance outweighed the beauty and the thinness! $781.62 is still alot, it may hurt my back but at least I can keep my pocket.

  • Is it worth twice as much?

I know mate. I want that G7 deal but it is long gone. Not coming back due to Covid-19 ( I would be shock if we can see it under 2k brandnew in the near future)
And Alienware is still a better brand and has better quality.

  • Waiting for a deal on a ROG Zephyrus G14. Need my back LOL

math on the omen is a lil bit off it will come out to be a tad more.

i have the same omen with gpu 2080, paid 2780. feels cheap, its very plasticky and touch marks are very visible, got it with really bad background light bleed, customer service does not exist and they dont recognize this as a problem, this is my last purchase of HP product for sure. says its bang and olufsen audio but my 10 year old dell had better speakers. also hp has the only bios that does not support XMP, and raid controller does not work. upgraded ram to 32gb and got another same ssd. not to mention it overheats really bad, had to undervolt cpu and get a cooling pad and 2x vacuum coolers for the rear to actually be able to play gpu demanding games.

    • the heck!
couple things i need to ask:
How did u get it for $2780? Is it the same 2019 version? Actually, just did the calculation, $2780 is the correct price for the 2080 GPU
About the heat and undervolt CPU, I know the 2018 version has couple issues you mentioned, but 2019's version has good reviews on it.

Please let me and other people know, thanks.

yes its the new version, end of march there was a sale for back to school or something, coupon code was STUDY20%, and some cashback too came out to be $2759 exactly. i regret missing the G7 for ~1750.

i love the refresh rate of the screen, it got a fast samsung ssd, 2080 gpu is a beast, nice customizable keyboard backlight, USB-C.

disapointed about cheap build quality, lack of XMP for ram, weak sound and an awful backlight bleed makes it impossible to watch movies in the evening. cpu overheats not the gpu, undervolting and coolers helped (temp still goes over 100 C on every core) but now its super loud so can only play using headphones, and the cpu is on the left side where i hold the palm of my left hand (WASD) so its burning after some time. im glad its winter, im sure it will not be possible to play it during oz summer.

very disapointed about customer service, they do not recognize backlight bleed as a fault and refuse to honor it under warranty.

        • I thought the CPU over heat happens to most gaming laptop. With the Dell G7, alot complaint and issues about CPU heat and GPU heat.

Can you return it for refund?

          • @inusure: no as i missed my 14 day return window. dont cancel the order, get it and test it. to be honest only backlight bleed bothers me, the rest i can live with. low price but we get what we pay for :)

            • @[Deactivated]: how about the sound mate? my brother is using the 2017 version, and there is no bass at all! really disappointed with it.
I know the sound quality is not great, but at least there should be some bass.

              • @inusure: it says bang and olufsen audio, i thought its a good brand so i would expect more.
maybe i just got the olufsen, as clearly the bang is missing.

in general the sound is weak, must use headphones.

  • Due to think we can get better deal at eofy i am thinking of buying a casual gaming laptop under 1600aud.

    • There are already laptops from Asus around that price point. Look up reviews of the Asus Tuf.

  • Where is the "you can build PC with half the price" boys

    • They only show up for the Apple deals

Beyond the GPU at the moment, which is a cut down 2070 mobile, what is the point of spending $3439 on this desktop replacement? The CPU is only a 6 core which is already superseded. More RAM and a bigger SSD would have been better. The Asus G14, that came out recently, has a CPU that far exceeds this one and is actually portable for gaming, plus being cheaper. If you are buying Alienware for the looks go ahead, but you not getting value for money or reliability. Having owned one in the past with plenty of problems due to thermal throttling.

  • Got mine with 2080 in Jan for 3399 before cashback and gift card on ebay. This isn't a deal really.

  • Is this worth buying given that the next generation will be out in 2 days?

    • If you are referring to the CPU. 10th gen is the same architecture as 9th so there is not much difference. It is the same Intel Skylake architecture since the 6000 series. Hence why it's getting soundly beaten by even entry level AMD Ryzen laptops with better CPUs. Look up the reviews.
