    Cheap!

  • How does this compare to T5 ?

    • +1

They'll perform essentially the same as I'm aware

      • +1

I've got 840 250gb (Orico case), 860EVO 500gb (Orico case) and T5 1tb drives and they are all much the same performance wise when testing between my devices. I'm pretty sure the T5 is still a SATA connector internally, so should be no difference in my environment where I dont have NVME/M2 drives in use. I prefer the smaller size of the T5, but none of them weigh that much in the first place.

  • Samsung 860 EVO 1TB + $13 ebay SATA case VS Samsung T5 1TB

I'm planning to use SSD for an external drive. Which one is better? is eBay SATA CASE is safe enough?

    • +10

Depends, if same price, I would take the Samsung T5. No warranty or support on the $13 Ebay case as far as I'm aware. T5 is also smaller.

    • T5 is small and a nice form factor, I have both and for external use T5 is much nicer than vased evo860 in szie, and style.

    • Thanks, forgot to link the offer!

    • If anyone already has the game, I'd be very appreciative :)

      • I second that :)

      • Bought the 970 evo recently and I don't play FPS so you can have mine :)

The only thing is, not sure what you need to redeem the game, so pm me with what you need.

        • There should be a code included with it, according to the Ubisoft link.

Thanks heaps mate, this means tons in this lockdown, my mates all play and I'm the odd one out.

    • Also if anyone has a game code to give away I'd be really greatful.

    • Samsung promo claims process sucks! Took me 4 months to get my free NBA game with my SSD purchase. They don't reply to emails, their phone support tells you to contact the retailer etc. Google it, you'll find thousands of posts from angry customers. Don't depend on getting your free game code anytime soon :/

      • If it's anything like their cashback process it is horrible.

        • Still waiting for my cashback in 2019.

          • @Ctn: You should email them, I have received most of them from Jan 2020 to April 2020.

Get this one instead: Lexar NS100 1TB 550MB/s SATA SSD $129 + delivery
    https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/lexar-ns100-1tb-550mb…
Slightly better performance than Samsung 850 EVO at $70 cheaper.
Good to shuck them for external drive also.

    • +6

Hmm NS100 is DRAM-less though. Probably fine for an external drive, but I wouldn't depend on it for my OS drive.

    • +2

Worth noting the write durability of the NS100 is ~15% worse than the "non-durable" EVO variant here, and ~57% worse than the 860 PRO.

    • Thanks, this should make a great games drive.

    • Ahh! I would got this if I knew :(
For 1TB SSD over 240gb SSD. Would of save me the hassle of removing my DVD drive and using my 500gb firecuda for storage?
Damn I was one day impatient lol. It's good to know there are still good bargains out there :D

  • This a better SSD than the MX500? A lot of people recommend that as a solid boot drive

    • +2

Yes, Samsung performs slightly better. If price difference is small, go for the 860 EVO.

      • I always go for Samsung.

      • Since samsung gives R6 for free, the value between the two ssds is the same lmao

    • +1

They are about the same. For most people, 860 EVO might be a little bit better. However, if you do a fair bit of writes, based on user benchmarks, MX500 has better sustained writes.

However, realistically, in order to benefit from the better sustained write in MX500, you need another SSD. Samsung's SSD warranty here is good. Don't know about Crucial yet. However, that also meant that I had to RMA at least one Samsung SSD already.

    • +4

Personally, I'd prefer to save the $24 and buy the MX500 @ $175 . If it was $5 difference, maybe the Samsung cause it's rated for better endurance, but not much else.

Having said that, unless you really want Rainbow Six…

  • +1

Not sure if the 500gb version is the cheapest it's been.

    https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/samsung-860-evo-500gb…

    • +5

Nah, current SSD prices are not good. We were able to get decent 1TB NVMe in the $155-$170 mark last year. Also, last year, we were aiming for $150 mark for 860 EVO, MX500 (obviously, there were rebates which helped). Now, people seem happy with $199 + delivery.

      • +3

nobody is happy at this price if they knew what it was pre covid..
I think people just accept it if they must buy it now..

Also we can wait for another samsung rebate which may hopefully drop it a bit further…

Right now is not good for any tech upgrades or new pc purchases..

I wished I had bought 2 x 500gb evo etc when it was $70 to 80 pre covid etc..

  • If i'm looking to store data on drive/play games/not for OS, would a DRAM-less be sufficient or would you guys recommend going with something like this?

    • +3

Depends on whether you'd write large amount of data into that drive frequently or not (copying data in/out daily). If it's mostly read then DRAM-less like Lexar NS100 1TB is much cheaper for very close performance.

If it was me though, I would go for the Crucial MX500 2TB. It has been around this price for a while, and a good SSD will last through 2 or 3 PC build cycles (6y+) so it's very long term and worthwhile investment.

      • Thanks, this does make sense :)

      • Thank you!

  • +7

    Delivery rates for anyone curious.

$9.95 to VIC, NSW & QLD
    $10.95 to SA
    $11.95 to WA

    Regional AU even higher.

  • Is it better to get 1x M.2 Nvme Evo 970 plus 250Gb, and a 1TB 7200 HDD, or just one of these?

    The former is cheaper.

    • +1

      Just one of this.

    • would recommend nvme for main drive or the window boot drive. And if you care a lot about speed, get a ssd if not then Barracuda 2tb should do the job.

      • +2

as a boot drive even ssd is pretty fast already…
most people aren't going to noticed or care about 1 or 2 second difference in boot time.

nvme main benefit is when copying data between two nvme drives..

    • You can get the m.2 version of this for $25 more (+ shipping) if you're particularly after that form factor: https://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/117626

  • how does this compare to the 860 Evo, price, performance and durability wise?
    https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/crucial-bx500-1tb-540…

    • +1

BX500 is DRAMless SSD with inferior TLC NAND chips. BX500 is okay as a secondary SSD which is used mostly for reads. For OS, as the drive fills up, the performance degrades a lot and due to it being DRAMless, when it does do some background cleanup internally, it can occasionally drops to really low speed for a few seconds.

The biggest problem with BX500 is that it is a drive that you should only consider when it is dirt cheap. A lot of OZBers paid less than that price for MX500, 860 EVO last year so avoid BX500 unless the price drops a lot.

      • I'm not very familiar with SSD's, I thought they were all the same, clearly, I was wrong. My aim is to upgrade to a 1TB SSD on my PC and I would like to know which SSD I should select from a performance, cost and reliability POV.

        • Go for MX500 or 860 EVO series. MX and 860 EVO are similar in terms of performance (860 EVO beats MX500 of course). But in terms of price, MX500 is cheaper. But currently Samsung is giving free Rainbow 6 for the purchase of 860 EVO.

  • +6

The good old days when these were going on special for $160-170ish delivered, ahhh

    • Yeah. This is a relatively huge price hike compared to other affected products. Total cost at least ~$210 (including $10 shipping)

      • +1

Its due to the aussie dollar going down. I'm in need of a 1TB SSD but holding out for end of financial year sales. $165 I once got it for via OzB.

  • Why is the 500GB MX500 ($128) more expensive than the 860 EVO ($109)? It's cheaper at every other size…
