Honestly, this is a BANGING price under normal circumstances. Aeroplan is a fantastic program with good redemption rates (mostly for Biz and First since Economy is almost never worth redeeming unless you're redeeming for a large group).

However, with the current covid19 situation, you don't know what will happen with your job, your money, etc. Aeroplan is independantly run, but anything can happen with probably no flying till late 2020 or early 2021 (or worse). I love a good points purchase, but I'm hesitant here.

You can take the risk and save till you can fly, but its dicey if you lose all your points or if the program get's devalued.

  • Right…ok.

Too risky I think. Air Canada/Aeroplan might go under or they might devalue the points and who knows when we can travel internationally again.

  • Hi OP
Can you convert Air Canada/Aeroplan points to Singapore Airlines/Krisflyer points ?
If so is it worth while doing so ?

    • +1

Not 100% certain, but Velocity <-> Krisflyer is one of the very few options for transferring points between two airline loyalty programs in the world.

You could use them via Aeroplan to directly redeem a Singapore Air flight, though the miles required and availability may differ compared to booking it with Krisflyer miles.

        Thanks
Velocity <-> Krisflyer If I can recall right I think at this present time they have put a halt on it.

Be aware that SQ is notorious for not releasing the better C or F seats to Star Alliance partners.

        • They've started to release a bit more J seats with their partners - but Alaska Mileage plan seems to get more access to their inventory than their star alliance partners which is odd.

Expect this to change as they get closer to joining One world though.

  • Equivalent to around $1500 for a star alliance gold plus 100k miles…but still too risky i think

    • I don’t think you’d get Gold from how I read it

  • Got a friend stuck in Canada keen to get back to AU, any benefit looking at this way to get a flight back when they start up again ?

    • Impossible to say. It doesn't give you any headstart as such as a benefit. If they release frequent flyer seats after restart, it may give you a cheaper option for a higher grade, but for economy I'm sure they'll have decent prices to begin with as availability will be wide open, so if you're just looking for economy I'd say don't worry. If economy only the risk is they don't make available any/many FF seats upfront so you may not be able to redeem them.

  • Reach Air Canada Altitude status without leaving the ground.

So we get to experience first class on the tarmac for the next 18+mths

  • Didn’t Air Canada buy Aeroplan back from an external owner to better serve its customers? Maybe not as risky as it would have been a year ago?

    • Yes, It's back under Air Canada ownership.

From what it appears, Air Canada is obviously needs a little hard cash, so that's why they are offering this deal. I don't believe this is a sign of a terrible financial issues, but having more hard cash on hand does make their situation better.

Being the Flag carrier and with such a large country, I kind of think that if it was in terrible financial straits, the Canadian government would probably save it.

    • Correct, but still run independently as I understand. They'll outlive Air Canada if anything happens - Canadian government won't let that happen though.

      • +1

Canadian goverment might bail out the airline but miles are either going to wiped or devalued if that happens.
Or just make them impossible to redeem.

Don't be buying miles right no (from any program.)
