It is a good deal. Would jump in now if I am not waiting for pixel 4a. P30 was on my list. I personally think JB might do the same deal like the se when 4a launched, Maybe I am wrong and missed this p30 deal.

  • +3

$390 for a P30 is a good deal. My only concern is if Google will stop the Google services on this device in the future.

    • Only if you need that much data, otherwise it's more like 500+,for me even like 600+.still not bad

      • +5

He is talking about getting the phone and the plan and pay the $390 cancellation fee to cancel the plan. Youre effectively paying $390 for the phone plus a dollar or 2 for the sim.

        • Do you think they would honor this deal for a 24 month plan on $45 per month?

Would like a new phone but I'm out of work at the moment.

    • +5

I have a P30 pro. Google cannot do anything to the phones that had google services prior to this whole shitshow. P40 Series.. Definitely a no go. Mate 30 on the same boat and anything fo4ward will be the same. You should be fine with the P30

      • Why can't they simply black list play store agent by device name?

  • +2

Still waiting for something like the P2XL deal of $59 a month. Was a new phone and a good deal. Ugh.

    • It was, my current pixel is from that deal. They did not do that to pixel 3xl, I do not think that will happen anytime soon.

      • I wouldn't touch another pixel, but just the value of it was great.

        • +1

Wow, I love my pixel, but only when the price tag is right.

          • @ce5himm: I'm on same boat and 2 months back Phone got random reboots so google sent out new one….

          • @ce5himm: I had a total of 7 RMA's between myself and my wife. Ended up selling them and couldn't be happier. So strange to have a high quality phone again.

            • +1

@onlinepred: Sorry to hear that. Maybe I am just lucky . My 2xl was fine.

              • @ce5himm: Yep there were a few that worked ;-) Even my housemate and brother in law had issues. Was like LG phones all over again.

                • @onlinepred: Despite the crap reviews, my experience with the new pixel 4 has been good. I got it in the previous JB deal ($199 upfront).

I previously had the pixel 3 which I had many frustrations.

The new pixel is basically a refined version of the 3. It does everything I wanted the 3 to do.

However, at full price it's terrible value for money when compared with other flagships.

                  • @malich: I tried the Pixel 4 while having hte s10e, it's battery life is even worse than S10e, couldn't believe it. Also considering I paid just under $700 at launch for the S10e and the Pixel 4 was at cheapest $899 at the time, it was crazy haha. Pixels are good value when they are half price.

            • @onlinepred: You must be super unlucky… I know quite a few people with Pixel 2 and 2XL and they have not had any issues - myself included.

              • @Munki: Nice haha. Funny hey. I mean I used to own a necks 5x that lived a long life. I guess the reality is that Google has had class actions due to massive failure every year now.

Sorry to bring up an old thread - currently on telstra and interested in porting out to get this deal (or the next). How long do they require you to be ported out?

    • +3

      30 days normally

      • Thanks!

    • You could also try using a 2$ Sim from optus.

Last time I activated the Sim a day before I got the 65$/mth Telstra deal+phone.

      • This still works just did it

Brought to you by the wonderful CCP. Sharing is caring.

  • Anyone provide input moving from a Mate 9/Mate 10 to a P30? Thinking about it for Mrs & I as a cheap upgrade to future proof another couple of years.

    • Performance wise should be no problem. Next year Android 11 might be the final version for p30.

      • I can live with that for a changeover purchase of $390. Sell the old ones for a few bucks and its a solid $300 phone for next 2 years.

Have thoroughly enjoyed our Huawei phones, but also enjoy google pay. Dont want to lose that - P30 seems the last option for a reasonably cheap upgrade.

        • Yes, or Nova 5t depend how you like your display.

  • Can you cancel and pay the cancellation fee and keep the phone for cheaper if you don't need the plan?

    • -6

You need to pay cancellation fee plus phone cost. 0 upfront is based on you stay 12 months with them. Otherwise they will charge you for the handset.

      • +3

That's not correct, the phone cost is completely separate, the only thing you pay is $390 ETC (via Telstra) when cancelling.

        • -4

You wish. I was think of the same question when I sigh for 0 upfront 59/m for pixel 2xl two years ago. JB plan is not like Vodafone's

          • +2

@ce5himm: Yours was a 24 month plan with the phone, not 12 Month SIM only + Upfront Cost (which this plan is).

See here to prove my point.

            • @doweyy: Interesting I will have a look

              • -3

@ce5himm: I called job the staff said I have to pay the rest of the plan out if I cancel it next month. $65*11month

It is a good deal though.

    • Yes you can. The etc on the $65 JB an is $390.

      • OK now I am tempted. Is it as simple as signing up, getting a new number, then cancelling the next day online?

        • +2

          Pretty much.
Even better, you used to be able to downgrade to the $45 JB plan at no cancellation cost…. Then cancel that plan which had a lower ETC. Not sure if they still allow that.

          • @mandelbrot: How do you downgrade to the $45 JB Plan?

Is it as simple as visiting the next day asking to reduce the plans?

          • @mandelbrot: They don't do that anymore.

At least not with the 2 Telstra support I've called. I think they fixed that loop hole.

            • @PuppieWayne: You do it with JB hi-fi, not with Telstra.

              • +1

                @mandelbrot: Hang on.

You sign up for a $65 JB plan and then, drop it to a $45 JB plan?

Who do you can to get that done it do you go into the shop?

  • i dont get this kind of jb deal.
how much commission jb will get from telstra for 12 months so it can cover the phone cost? the phone cost is high but the monthly commision from $65 would be small, right?

    • Maybe the cost for connecting one unmber is extremely low for the plan.

      • you mean telstra will give like $30 commission each month out of $65 to jb? that's like 50% commission. crazy./
but even 30*12 is just 360 for jb. enough for them to buy the Huawei p30? maybe not.

        • I think no one here knows the real cost for Telstra to run one plan like the 65 deal. Maybe as less as 5 a month. For the phone wholesale price might be like 400. Then they will have 300+ profit to share between Telstra and JB.

The number is of course not for sure. Just my guess. You get the idea.

          • @ce5himm: The other factor is the amount of people that do not churn after the initial 12 months is over. The additional customers would also by accessories from JB

          • @ce5himm: no wonder jb share price is keep going up

    • I've spoken to a few people at JB they only get around $20 Commission per sign up..

      • Normally the consultant get $20 as like bonus but JB would get more than that from Telstra. Also if you are still connected, JB would get commission per month for airtime

  • Any of you guys using the P30? Interested on knowing what the camera and battery is like.

    • +1

Been using it for just over a year - camera's quite good and the night mode in low light is probably about 80% as good as the newest iPhone.

Battery lasts me the day with 5-6 hrs SoT (probably only twice over the year where I ran flat)

    • Both are fantastic! You will not be disappointed. Check out some Youtube reviews for more details.

Coming from a long-time Samsung user I did have to get reacquainted with where the settings are. But nothing sticks out after the first 2-3 days. The photo optimisation is different to Samsung's, but this is a matter of preference, not better/worse.

Dual SIM free you from having to be tied to expensive plans in the future.

    • Great phone, great camera. Battery life is pretty standard.
Well versed people can also disable those pesky bundled persistent apps:
      https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-20-pro/how-to/guide-re…

  • Very tempting as the website has the p30 as the dual sim model.
I’m with Telstra but I assume I could activate a $2 Optus sum to take advantage of this deal?

    • Yes it's dual hybrid sim (unlocked). My wife has it (got it last year from JB deal).

  • and also dont forget in the past (Samsung deal) people able to get the deal, then straight away downgrade to lower plan or even change from contract to byo (no contract) then cancel the following week without any penalty!

    probably cant do that anymore…

    • wow so they essentially got the phone for free?

      • yes or just pay the first month (also prorated not full $65 if you cancel halfway).
it was so weird.. when they called, the telstra staff knew the phone was from JBHF but listed under BYO bring your own phone (not contract) so the staff happy to do anything you want downgrade or even cancel.
definitely something broken between JB and TLS

      • Yeah I did this last year but was with the $500 gift card instead. I was able to swap to a Telstra month to month plan then port out all within the space of a couple of weeks. Although I have read that they have stopped it now but YMMV.

I just got the P30 deal today so I may try again but not holding my breathe

        • Did you get an invoice from JB hi fi for the purchase of the phone? Ie an invoice of $900 with a $900 gift card used and $0 cash?

          • +1

@apwee1: I'll have to double check but off the top of my head I reckon that's what it details

  • +1

Hi guys, just wondering if I should call jb or telstra to confirm the cancellation cost. I understand some of you might have given the good advice, thanks for that. but things might have changed.

    Thanks.

    • Telstra. JB just sign up for you and gives you the phone. Wish you success and do not forget let us know. If 390 works, I will go straight away.

    • +3

So I just grabbed the P30 earlier today. The paperwork and Telstra app says cancellation is $390.

      PS. Cheers OP

      • Have you already processed the cancellation?

        • +1

I have gone through this process myself and it is definitely $390 maximum on a pro rata

          • @aspirepranesh: Thanks. Maybe I should go visit local jb later.

          • @aspirepranesh: Is the process completed? I mean you paid just $390 and nothing more than that?

            • @Kush Hariya: I have successfully signed up for telstra plan, got the phone for free and ported out to Optus. Not via this deal, but one of the previous deals.

              Same plan. Same process.

        • I'm gonna stick with the plan for now but may cancel down the track. Not sure yet

          • @Whatisthatvelvet: on the app, cancellation for handset fee is 0? I recall when I sign two years ago,on paperwork it say handset is 0. But in the app, when they calculate the final fee, the handset is definitely over 0.

            • @ce5himm: Handset is not purchased through tesltra mate.

Jb hi fi sells them and telstra subsidize them to $0 for you signing up to the plan, instead of you paying jb for the phone. You own the phone.

There is no handset fee you pay to telstra for cancelling the plan.

            • @ce5himm: Yep on the app it says -

              Plan early termination charge $390
              Device buy out $0.

I can go to the Cancel your Plan tab and that says -

"the cost to buy out device and end this plan today will be atleast $390".
I guess atleast means any additional charges are added on ie excess data etc

  • I got on this deal last year. Can I port to optus then port back to telstra.

    • Normally 30 days between out and back

  • I'm still not clear about "Excludes existing Telstra, Belong & Boost customers".
If I have my mobile on Optus and the tablet on Telstra pre-paid data sim. No contracts with Telstra. Am I still eligible or not? Can I port my mobile to Telstra using this deal?
    Thanks for help.

  • Does anyone know how much storage the p30 have?

    • 128g

      • Oh thx!,

Btw this one is locked to telstra right? Anyway to unlock it?

        • unlocked

  • Guys I need some advice!

I am currently with Optus on 12 months plan which will be finished by 2020-07-10 (termination cost $40), paying $32 every months.
I have another plan with Optus (My MBB plus 30GB) 24 months contract which will be finished by 2021-07-11. I got Galaxy watch 46mm - cellular with 30 GB internet from them which I pay $22.40 every months (termination cost $393).

So I would like to know, can I port in to Telstra and cancel my 12 months Optus contract but keep my MBB plus 30GB contract or I have to keep both service in order to use the 30 MB internet?

If I port in to Telstra can I still use both Telstra and my Optus internet service?

    Thanks for your information. :)

  • Hey guys, through the link OP provided, I clicked into the banner and found this: phone plans which shows $65 phone plan along with $45 phone plan (min cost $540)!

Does it mean we can get even lower ETC (from $390 to $270) for this?

    • In-store only. So basically you won't see details. That info is just general. 45/m won't get you p30. Unless those people saying you can downgrade to 45.

  • This was with a s20+ last month.

  • Thanks OP. Just picked up the s20 with a $500 gift card I had lying around

  • Just drove to JB Hifi before they close at 5pm. Encountered some problem there.

The staff said the phone P30 is $899, and they will give me a $900 Gift card specifically and exclusively for covering the cost of this phone, to make it $0 upfront.

When I asked about early termination of the phone plan right before the purchase, the staff said if I terminate the plan early, then Telstra will not only charge the whole 12 months fee, and also the same amount of money the gift card I used today to buy the phone. Which means the total cost if I break the plan will be ($65 x 12 + $900).

I mentioned that there's only ETC for breaking the plan, but the staff insisted that Telstra will charge extra $900 for the phone, "you can't get the phone for free".

So I gave up, didn't dare to risk it.

Guys please let me know what's happening? Is he bluffing? :(
I guess the main issue is they use $900 gift card for purchasing the phone instead of giving me phone for $0 upfront, to avoid giving phone for free.

    • They are bluffing in regards to paying back the $900, but them utilising a gift card to purchase the phone is correct. The signup process also takes a bit of time, so potentially they also didnt want to stay back.

      • Does this mean that you'd get a tax invoice for the phone to the value of $899? If so, could you then claim TRS on the phone (in normal circumstances)?

        • +1

          Correct.

      • This is copy from the reply to GiggityGiggity. I might contact Telstra to confirm this contradictive policy against what JB hifi said

I just checked the policy again, and found the following: Telstra policy for JB hifi mobile plans

It's kind of similar to what the JB hifi staff told me, that I need to pay $900 and also the remaining BYO plan pro-rata.

JB Hi-Fi Phone Credit (only available on $65 JB Hi-Fi Mobile Plan)

For new and existing Telstra customers signing up to a $65 JB Hi-Fi Mobile Plan, you may be eligible to recieve a credit to put towards the purchase of an eligible JB Hi-Fi handset (Phone Credit Amount). The applicable Phone Credit Amount will be applied to the purchase price of your eligible handset at the
point of sale within the JB Hi-Fi store. This Phone Credit Amount must be used at the time you sign up to the plan and is not transferable or redeemable for cash (including any unused part).
If you cancel, recontract or move to an ineligible plan then you will need to pay a Phone Credit Cancellation Fee pro-rated against the remaining months on your plan, the maximum of which is set out in the table above. This is in addition to any Early Termination Charges (ETCs) set out in the above table and accessory payments.

What happens if I cancel my plan early?

You’ll need to pay an Early Termination Charge if you cancel your plan early plus any remaining handset and accessory payments. The maximum Early Termination Charge for your plan is set out in the above table. You will also need to pay a Phone Credit Cancellation Fee if you received a Phone Credit Amount at sign up. The Maximum Phone Credit Cancellation Fee is set out in the Plan Cost table.

Although in the table the $65 BYO plan, the Phone Credit Amount is N/A, I'm not sure if JB hifi's $900 gift card counts as Phone Credit for this P30.
