  • It's an OK deal if you don't already have a N36L I suppose.

    4x Seagate 2TB drives @ $79 = $316

So you're playing $245.70 for the server. And that's also assuming that they don't install any of it..

  • +1

    Inevitable comparison:

Proliant server: $199 delivered on previous deals
    2TB Barracuda x4: $78 x4 = $312 (staticice; MSY/NetPlus)
    Total: $511

At least $50 more expensive than previous. Question is, is there a better deal out there?

    • +1

The questions is you can't find $199 deal on today's market…….

      • +18

        That wasn't a question.

  • This is a good deal, but the only thing stop me is this chip set donot support RAID 5, a little bit waste the HD space if you use RAID 1, I know if it does the price will raise a lot, but still want that……..can anyone suggest a Micro-server like this with similar price range and CPU speed which support RAID 5?

    • +1

Alot of users have install raid cards in the pci slot

    • +2

There's always software RAID 5. Works perfectly fine for home use, and it's not like anyone is going to run a sophisticated server on a Proliant.

    • I wouldn't trust RAID-5 with drives this big anyway.

      • +1

Meh, it's fine. RAID is not backup, so it's just to avoid any single drive failures causing problems.

      • RAID 4 is better for large movie files over RAID 5

    • Do your RAID in software (eg, in FreeNAS 8.0.1's
FreeBSD 8.2, ie, "under the hood")

    • mwave Availability:
      In Stock with Suppliers NO
      In Stock at Mwave: NO

  • 8.25 Gb of storage

    i think the mean Terabytes

  • only 4 hdd bays in this micro-server, how come you fit in 4x2t and 1x250gb in it? any one?

    • DVD bay

    • you move the 250gb drive to where the CD/DVD drive would usually go

      edit: lol…beat me to it

    • I put 1 x HD5550 gf card, 4gh ram, blu-ray drive, 3x1tb wd black in my micro-server, so far so good. the $199 deal from hp is unbeatable.

    • You would have to use the 5.25" bay for the extra drive. But then the 5th sata port doesn't run at full speed without a hacked bios.

They shouldn't be selling this config without mentioning those. And really, they are just hiding their inflated price behind a stack of drives.

It's just normal price, not a bargain, then add in the above, equals neg.

      • How is that a negative? I have the plan to do this to my ones. With 4 main drives and 2.5 OS drive and esata backup drive

        • This is not a bargain as it is not any cheaper than pricing from other shops. If we go by ryang's post (#1) the price you're paying for the server minus the HDDs is $245.70.

(Assuming you are able to get the 4x Seagate 2TB drives @ $79 = $316)

And then, Warcom is selling it for $234.99 which is cheaper:

        • +2

Not only that like stumo points out, the 250GB drive they've stuck in the DVD bay WILL NOT be running at full speed, unless Megabuy has hacked the BIOS for purchasers???

    • no problem at all, some geek even added total six hd in it, remove the DVD drive conect to the ESATA in the back.

  • +1

If anyone can find the server minus HDDs for the $199 price I would be interested. Previous deals at this price sell out in record time I have found as they don't often have much stock.

  • http://www.megabuy.com.au/hp-proliant-n36l-microserver-amd-1… they also have a 2x2tb as well for $399 but the above sounded better all same drives

  • -3

I see it has 4 bays, where is the extra 250GB HDD going to fit?

  • Only 1GB of ram. Would be better if they swap that out for 8GB.

    • 8gb of ecc ram wouldn't be cheap, would be nice tho

    • 4GB is more than enough to run. Don't forget it only has a 1.3gbz dual core CPU. it can only use as a htpc or a file server.

      • Only!?

I'm using mine as a file server, web server, torrent box, development system… All with 1GB. :P

        • btw, on windows 7

  • Pretty good price considering the market now but MegaBuy burnt a few bridges with their initial Microserver fiasco :/

above seems ok considering you wont find an N36L for $200 anywhere.

for those considering buying it, it's a terrific little unit.
i was lucky enough to get the previous deal, and I recommend the following:

-an extra 2Gb RAM module (doesnt have to be ECC for a home server or htpc setup), to give you total memory of 3Gb (plenty).

-an ASUS HD6450 1Gb video card (no fan, low power, low profile bracket, hdmi out).

-a Digital Now Dual Hybrid 7164 tv tuner card (comes with remote and IR rec).

-LG Bluray player (cheap, quiet, works as it should).

-2x 2TB WD Cav Greens (cheap, quiet, reliable).

All the above works perfectly. I can play full HD bluray mkv's (or directly off disc) with no absolutely no stutter/dropped frames and surround sound. The N36L is a terrific box to set up either a home server or htpc (or both in my setup). Media Portal on Win7 is my preferred software atm.

If you can find the N36L for about $200 (unlikely) jump on it. Otherwise above deal probably next best thing.

    • What kinda power consumption you getting and how does the sleep perform? I heard some bad things about it not sleepig correctly

      • +1

I have one set up as a media centre with just the stock 250GB HDD and a HIS HD5450 pci-express video card for HDMI output. Playing a 1080P MKV while running under Windows 7 64bit it consumes about 50W of energy. Haven't had any issues with sleep, I think it drops down to about 17W from memory.

I built about 5 HTPCs using the n36l microserver - brilliant little system.
I've got 5 still sealed, brand new ones - so contact me if you're interested in taking one off my hands for $240 plus post (recently cost me $9 to post one from one side of Melbourne to the other).

  • Can anyone with the N36L and several Hdds installed, comment on the power consumption of their unit.
from what i can find, it seems to vary alot!

@UFO, do you know the approximate power usage of your setup?

    Thanks

    • Green drives vs 7200 will vary the power consumption as well.

  • this is basically the same as their last offer (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/49747) but with 4 drives at normal prices. no deal. at least in the last deal you get free delivery if you bought 4 drives

  • +2

this is not a bargain rather than advertisement!

if you wanna sell more hard drives
at least take off some price on other part(microserver)
    putting A(microserver) + B(hard drives) = X (BARGAIN)?

what kind of deal is this on ozbargain?
no offence, but this is NOT a bargain post!

  • this seems to be standard pricing for these components. neg because I expect bargains on ozbargain.

  • negging for reasons as stated previously, not to mention boycotting Megabuy on principle alone

  • considering all the components are on market price and there is not any discount by buying as a bundle, how can you say this is a bargain?

  • Logged on to NEG the deal. What a joke. Megabuy is definitely the worst on-line retailer I've experienced. Going through PayPal dispute at the moment.

    • I purchased 3 microservers from megabuys and they were great to deal with, fast delivery.

I'm guessing they use their own OS? I would rather build my own NAS for cheaper - it would be more customizable, future proof, and allow for more storage.

    • It's server hardware so you can install any microsoft, Linux software you wish. Bootable from harddrive or internal USB port

You will find it hard to build a custom nas this size for less cost unless you picked this one up at the old supercheap price

    • +1

Oh please… We've already done this with the previous threads.

Can you show me where you can find a case, PSU, motherboard, RAM, HDD, and CPU for under $200? New. Not some old heap of crap hiding in a cupboard. Oh, and have 4 hot-swap bays. With a server-grade warranty.

  • megabuy is getting -smashed-
