  • What's Usenet like these days, I haven't used it since Newzbin/Astraweb the days.

I imagine it's much the same. I can get all the news I want, most of the news I need is available but if you want to search for an old news article, it's likely to be taken down. So it's good to look at the NL providers that are much better.

      • You must like the news a lot :)

        • There's a limit to the number of Linux distributions one can drool over.

@chrism238: Plus, I suppose you gotta read the news to work out when the new linux iso's are released…

I mainly want to read the latest news. I tried to get back into news reading a little while back, but found it hard to find a reliable cheap place that lists all the articles available.

  • I believe Newsdemon is a reseller for Newshosting so their service levels are linked. They did have a data cap on their unlimited accounts but I believe it's been removed - that said I noticed it's still in their FAQs. They also had their own pre-configured News Reader which looks like it's been made redundant and a VPN is offered in its place. I think most people would find the free News Reader more attractive.
They do have over 4000 days retention which is huge, they also sell block plans (limited VPN on these) and allow a person to "pause" their account for a couple of months which is also excellent. They have server farms through US and EU, not sure what their speeds are like these days but I suspect as good as they once were. They also offer 50 sim connections and have great support.
$47 for an unlimited account isn't bad for someone new or re-entering Usenet except the "recurring" charge will likely be at full price next time around.

Thanks for providing all that info Ebany! Some is accurate and some isn't. We do not have data caps. I will make sure the FAQ page is adjusted accordingly. Thanks for the heads up…if you will private message me, I will get you a free account.

Almost nobody was using the free newsreader as most usenet users have their own personal clients they prefer. Getting rid of the newsreader is part of how we were able to lower our prices to be the lowest price full retention provider. The VPN is owned in house, so we do not incur costs for adding that for users. Some of our competitors require users to sign up for year long terms to get VPN added for free.

The account will renew at the exact same price when it comes time for renewal. No games or funny stuff.

  • are these similar to usenet.farm?
i usually have no trouble getting my news with them and also tweaknews, would like a bit more backup data.
