€35.88 ($60.70 AUD) for 12-Months of Unlimited Usenet with access to European Server and 4,266 Days of Retention @ Eweka

90

Hello all you cool cats and kittens, who doesn't like a Usenet deal that celebrates a Dutch King? The European Usenet provider Eweka is running a special on their 12-month unlimited highspeed plan. The normal price is €9,60/mo ($16.24 AUD) so you are saving 69% and it is a lifetime discount that renews every 12-months. This plan comes with 20 connections, 4,266+ days retention, and best of all Eweka is on a unique European backbone which means it is great for finding content.

I had an expired Eweka account and haven't used the service for a few years but they sent me an email with this offer and I'm going to try it out. Stay safe and long live Usenet.

    What is this service even…?

    • It is a Usenet provider, can never say too much about Usenet but I would suggest doing the google search "what is usenet"

      • So , off-grid-type social platform.
        interesante.

        • Ah..yeah..not really.

Most use Usenet these days for the binaries rather than the text posts.

          • @SBOB: This makes me feel very old - despite being young :(

Is this a popular thing im missing on or just a niche 'market' thing?

            • @The Milk Man: Usenet existed well before the web did. Think of it as a globally distributed message board. As files can also be encoded in text messages, its use has transitioned from a distribution network of messages to one of "Linux isos"

          • +1

@SBOB: If you want to find the best surfing locations of 2008 the text posts come in handy

            • @indingnation: I still occasionally see old posts I made in text chats on technical and home theater groups whenever I get bored enough to google my own name (whenever I sanity check that my online profile is still minimal enough to not be embarrassing ;) )

              • @SBOB: I found some of my posts from my uni days in the early 90s, I thought usenet was pretty amazing back then. Terry Pratchett used to be quite active on alt.fan.pratchett and I thought it was pretty mind blowing you could have conversations with him.Likewise heaps of Commodore employees would post in the Amiga groups

Before the days of Twitter, even the World Wide Web, it was the first glimpse of the way communications were heading.

If reddit and P2P had a baby it would be called Usenet

About $61 for those playing at home

    • Good call, I updated the post with the local price

  • I haven’t paid for downloads for years….apart from a Real-Debrid account.

    • +1

I haven't paid for internet in years… apart from my ISP bills

      :/

      • The real-debrid account is optional. I can still download, albeit at slower speeds.

Yes, yes, I suppose you could sit outside Maccas or wherever, and use the free wifi.

  • Looks like 500 Internal Error when trying to pay….

    • I was getting this error as well, turns out it was because I already had an active subscription.
Cancelled the auto-renewal on PayPal first and then tried again (this time I used CC directly because PayPal's own conversion rates makes it about $5 or so more expensive).

  • With this deal, does this mean after the 12 months the price is still €35.88 to renew or does it go back to the original price?

Edit: Nevermind, found the answer. After I bought the 12 months with PayPal I was sent an email saying 12 months subscription and the amount to be taken every 12 months is €35.88. Awesome.

  • Thanks OP, been waiting for a deal like this!

  • Whilst this is a good deal, for those looking around Newsgroupdirect have a 'usenet deals' page where they price match other providers. Always good to keep an eye on as they sometimes have some very good prices.

    • Better than this one?

    • Eweka would be a more solid backbone choice if you were trying to avoid Highwinds resellers

  • Is this the lowest its been?
