According to What Hifi the Audio Pro Addon C10 is a better speaker and is only $515 from video pro.

Well I mean it’s about being the sonos ecosystem.

    • +1

I almost bought the C10 before eventually choosing the Sonos. Reviews are pretty unanimous on the sound quality of the C10, however their app reviews are atrocious - 2.1 stars on the Android store. What's the point of great sound if you can barely get it to work?

Why would you buy into their system knowing that they will probably shaft you down the track?

    • +1

If you mean because they announced then retracted that they'd stop pushing updates to a speaker which had not been manufactured for five years (and other devices that were over 10 years old) then I guess every company shafts everyone, so we shouldn't buy anything.

      • -3

They were going to brick devices so you couldn't even resell them if you decided to upgrade to a newer version. The best hifi gear lasts 20 plus years and has good resale value.

        • +3

No… You forgot the other half of the deal. It is by choice only, not forced. And they would give you a 30% discount. So you could do what suits you more.

The deal is better now, as you get the 30% and get to keep using the old one. But the old deal was by no means forcing you to do something

        • From what I understand, you have the option to trade in an old speaker or device for a 30% discount on a new one. But rather than you having to post it to them (at great expense), they will instead block the speaker/device from being registered on another system. (Yes, "brick" it.) But this seems fair to me, as you've "traded" it in - so the same outcome as other manufacturers that require you to physically trade them in. (i.e. you don't keep them / can't resell them)

But you don't have to trade them in, and can keep using the devices for (likely) years to come; you just won't get any more software updates. Have your HiFi speakers had any software updates?! :-)

          • @stokesy77: Yes, initially this is what Sonos wants, but they backed down and let you have the 30% trade in discount if you purchase their product at RRP, and you get to keep your existing speaker and they won't brick it, but no software update come May. Which is perfectly fine.

  • Holy wow, these are expensive - but why so much? I've always wanted a Sonos.

Number of reason but they offer premium sound quality. As with all things that are subjective, you mileage may vary based on your ears.

Having said that, a pair of these with the sub… you cant go wrong!!

      • As an owner of Sonos echo , this, sub , bar, one , also few other sound systems, yamaha, maratz, paradigm. I 100% agree with above comment, easiness & sounds quality I can see now I lean towards sonos system.

        • I have the original Play:5, bloody awesome speaker, Sound quality is top-notch, on par with Bose.

  • I gave up SONOS (2x SONOS 1 & SONOS bar) 2 years before as lots of limitations. You can't even simply get a AUX in on them……

The promised google assistant in Australia never arrived before I gave them up.

Without getting into the whole smart speaker religious war, this is simply a very good price for a Play:5, which is the point of the post, as it is actually a bargain for the product, especially considering $US exchange rate lately. Thanks OP.

I own a Play 5, Beam, 2 Ones and a Sub, I tried different pairing with all of them and the Play5 is quite unbelievable on its own, it is rich, the bass that come out of this thing is very balanced and deep, mids and highs are incredibly clear, I love this thing. Just a few more things, Sonos relies heavily on your internet connexion, if you don't have a stable wifi I would not recommend (the Play 5 has an AUX output though). Also Trueplay (the app that tunes your speaker according to the acoustic of your room) only works with iOS devices and it makes quite a difference, things to consider :-)

    • If I want to plug them to my laptop, can I do it using existing wifi and all sounds from laptop can output or I need to use input line cable? I use my existing Sony wireless speakers and they connect via bluetooth seamlessly.

      • You would need to use a 3.5mm line cable from your laptop's headphone jack.

  • This or google Home max ?

    • As with most things, it depends on what is important to you, and you haven't said what you currently have or what you're looking for. There are lots of comparisons online, but a simple way to compare could be: if you want multi-room options or music source options, get the Play:5. Or if you want Bluetooth and Google assistant get the Max. Asthectics, sound quality, "loudness", bass etc are all likely going to be in your decision too, but they are subjective.

As I'm already in the Sonos system, buying more Sonos speakers makes sense because I can control them from the same app and group them for whole house sound. I already have Google minis plus my phone for voice control, so don't need the Google assistant "backed in". And having heard the 5 on multiple occasions I know I like (love) their sound… so pulled the trigger and bought two!

      • you can group and play whole house on google speakers too

        • True but sadly cannot mix and match ( eg. Sonos + google max)

  • Hey Antowar,

I have 2 ones and a Sub, is it worth getting this 5?

How did you put your system together?

    Cheers :)

In Sonos forums I read two Sonos One’s and the Sub sound better than two Play:5 and the Sub.

      • Hey! My humble opinion is that 2x Play 5 without Sub is the perfect combo for music (although I only have 1 Play 5), the bass on the 5 is very balanced and blends nicely with the rest , when you ad a sub sometimes you can feel where the bass is coming from and does not blend as well. This is my experience and it may vary according to your room. For movies, the sub is definitely an asset :-)

        • Thanks for sharing.
I considered 2x Play:5’s (for the wireless convenience) at one point a year or two ago, ended up going with bookshelf speakers.
Everyone will have different preferences I guess.

  • Hey lovelyjubbly, I normally have the beam sub and ones as a 5.1 setup and the Play 5 in my bedroom, the Ones and Sub are really amazing and you have the stereo which you don't have with the Play 5. That being said the 5 does a great job bouncing the sound on walls and sometimes it feels like the sound is coming from somewhere else.
If you have the ones and sub for music I would keep that, this is an amazing combo, or you could do 2 x play 5 :-)

  • Thanks Antowar, you've been most helpful :)

Sounds like its more of a nice to have for me :(

My 2 x 1s and subs do sound brilliant!
