Free 50GB of ADrive Online Storage (Basic Plan)

293

ADrive offers 50GB of online storage space for free. (Be sure to select the "Basic - Free" plan.)

That's one of the largest storage capacities I've seen from a free service. ADrive is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux; for more information on this service, click here:
http://www.adrive.com/plans

EDIT: It uploads complete folders with subfolders containing all the files. I find it a good way to backup important stuff incase if you need and if you are on the move.

    Whynot Dropbox?

    • +2

It has recently been the subject of very serious security concerns.

  • +7

because they don't have 50gb for free?

      • +4

        i ran out :(

        • I guess it depends what you use it for. I find that its integration with various apps and the ability to easily sync files a blessing. I use it for Uni and have loads of documents uploaded and have only used 54MB.

        • clearly you don't have enough journals saved or recorded lectures

Yeah I guess it isn't really a bargain since they've always offered this.

      • I dont think it was compatible across a range of operating systems back then, and I found it as a good deal as they are currently promoting it. Not sure if it was always for free…

      • +3

        -> kheob
They haven't had free accounts in ages.

        • Fair enough. i just assumed that they did since Green linked that really old post. My mistake.

    • +9

only on ozbargain can you find someone who will complain about something that has always been free.

  • -1

but it says 50gb is 14 day trial

    • +2

You have to choose the "Basic Plan"… then its free…

  • +3

For those who picked up an HP Touchpad, don't forget that box.net offers a free 50gb account for life when you sign up (or log in) through the app. :)

    • -1

Yes, both of you: remember what jump22 says.

    • Did you get the offer of another 10x 50GB accounts "for your teammates" like I did from them?

I found their whole system clunky. With a 1MB/s uplink, it still takes ages to transfer anything.

Maybe by the time the NBN comes around and we get useful upload speeds it'll be more useful.

    been there for a while…

    • for those who negged my comment, I did get my free 50GB account back in June 2008…

  • I think this should go in the forum

  • Whats the speed like compared to DropBox? Anyone know?

    • +1

300kb/s download.. can go up to 600 sometimes.
upload.. i dont know. definitely slower than DropBox, and definitely not a Dropbox replacement.

      • +2

Reason for that being their servers reside on the East Coast of US, ping 38.126.114.101, I got 174ms pretty good since its via Cogent/PSI, it will deffer from ISP to ISP…

        • I wouldn't call Cogent quality bandwidth; it's practically the US equivalent of TPG (except not residential) :P

  • +4

Forum Material, Good offer…, but Not Bargain !

  • Can you download the software for mac if you get the basic plan? Can anyone link me to it?

    • You need to actually sign up for it first….

  • -1

    Isn't this a 1 week trial?

    • -1

Well, its free on the basic plan with no time limit…

  • while it is large and free, the interface is a pain to use…

    • Yep - its a really crappy system.

Not sure if you can access their forum from outside the members area, but there's a lot of complaints about the interface. It was like this 12 months ago when I trialed it (and gave up because it was a PITA to use)

  • doesn't look like you get the software with the basic plan…

"ADrive Desktop for Windows, Mac & Linux" doesn't have a tick for the basic plan.

  • going from the overview table, the free basic plan comes with advertising

Please check here if you do not wish to receive email updates or special promotions from ADrive and/or its partners. (struck out)
*only Signature and Premium users may choose this option.

looks like you will receive spam

  • Thanks just created an account see how's goin.

Google Docs is lots better value than this if you don't want advertising:
    20GB = $5 per year
    80GB = $20
etc - all the way to 4TB.
There's a free google app called syncdocs http://syncdocs.com that works like Dropbox

  • There is no way they can offer 50gb of free storage forever. Mark my words that this is not feasible. It would cost them way too much in storage space.

    • +1

Well think of the time when Gmail came out with 4 GB of space and Hotmail and Yahoo were on 4 MB still.

Read Free by Chris Anderson if you have any doubts..

  • Just created a Basic account and it said 50 GB account created !
    good one,

    ADrive Review
ADrive is a relative newcomer to online storage services, at least compared to the other sites in this review. That shows in both the pricing and features because this service seems to be more current in both areas than most of the other services we reviewed. The fact that they offer 50GB of web storage space for free when other online storage services are unwilling to muster up that much space is a great bonus.

We get the impression that ADrive is geared more toward business and enterprise users because there are fewer features available on the free account. Don’t get us wrong, the 50GB free account certainly has ample space compared to the 1 or 2GB free accounts that other services offer. But you have to pay in order to get a lot of the features that come standard in other storage sites.

For instance, in order to get simple SSL encryption on your file transfers, you need to pay for your account because the free account won’t do it. This probably isn’t a big deal to you if you just want to store a few nonessential files that can be accessed from anywhere. But if you have any documents or images with personal information you might want to think twice about going with the free account.

If you do go for the paid account, the features open up considerably. You have access to sub-accounts and even multiple concurrent sessions of your storage space. This is another feature that probably won’t be important to the average personal user, but this feature becomes extremely useful for businesses that want to have files available to multiple employees over the internet.

ADrive has full support for file sharing and file history. The service can even go over your file history and recover files. This is especially nice if you are frequently pulling documents off your online storage, editing them and uploading them again.

All of that sounds pretty standard for online storage services, and they should, but there was one feature in ADrive that we absolutely loved and which we want to see in other services. This service provides access to the Zoho Online Document Editor so that you don’t even need to download your files to a computer hard drive to access them and edit them. This is a wonderfully useful tool, especially if you are using a public or bare-bones computer that might not have document editing software. Plus, it’s just more convenient even if you do have editing software. You can make changes right in Zoho and save; you’re done. This feature alone makes us love this service, regardless of what else it has to offer.

As we mentioned above, the security on the free account is too light. But if you are paying for additional features, the security improves dramatically. Uploads and downloads are SSL-encrypted to ensure privacy, and your account is password protected.

One of the most reassuring security features that this service has is geographical redundancy. That’s just a fancy way of saying that they store several copies of your files in different places. This isn’t good for security so much as backup. If something were to happen to the ADrive facility (natural disaster, for instance) your data would still be available from one of their servers in a different location.

This category is where we struggled with ADrive. While the pricing certainly is better than a lot of the competition, it still isn’t the best. The free account offers 50GB storage, which is just fine for the average person that just needs some personal storage. But if you need to store large or private files, the basic free account isn’t going to be enough. That’s where the other pricing plans come in.

Here’s the breakdown: 50GB storage for free if you don’t care about security or extra features, or a monthly fee for the same amount of space if you’d like the extra features and security. Pricing plans and available space increase from there.

ADrive has a simple interface that allows you to see what is currently stored in your account. Uploading and downloading are simple tasks, requiring you to identify the files you want to move and to where. The feature that makes this service more convenient than most other storage sites is the inclusion of the Zoho document editor. You don't need to download a file to your hard drive to alter it; it can be edited in the Zoho program and left in your storage. This is a feature that we hope to see a lot more of as storage sites start integrating with the cloud computing movement.

ADrive has email support to help you answer your questions. However, their response time isn’t exactly blazing fast. If you prefer to use telephone support lines, you’ll be disappointed. ADrive doesn’t have any. On the positive side, ADrive’s FAQ was pretty thorough and well organized, so you’ll probably find answers to most of the questions you’d have in there.

    Summary:
ADrive has a lot of things we love and a few things we don’t. The features are great, but not on the free account. The pricing is good, but not the best. We did unconditionally love the built-in document editor, which we hope to see in more storage services. Overall, ADrive will do exactly what you need it to and at a reasonable price.
