            • @VAA: I use one of these docks connected to 2x of these monitors while sitting on one of these stands and controlled by this keyboard and this mouse via Bluetooth

              • @AaronR: Thanks for the details and links to items.

              • @AaronR: Do you mind if i ask how you attach 2 screens to this? I notice the dock only has one HDMI out

                • +1

@dsach: @dsach: I've got one screen plugged in with a HDMI <> HDMI cable into the dock. The other screen I'm running with a HDMI <> USB-C cable directly into the MacBook.

Dock takes up one port, the second screen takes up the one next to it.

Well it's still the butterfly keyboard so:

      1) You may love typing on it or hate it. Personal preference there
      2) Being a butterfly keyboard it's susceptible to failure. There is a 4 year service program on it. That may or may not give you confidence. My last MacBook lasted 8 years so I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with 4 years coverage. If you need to use that service they'll take the entire computer away however for a period.

Personally I'd go for a 16" or 13" Air with the new keyboard.

This is a great deal, I have this model as a replacement for my 2018 one that had all the problems and haven’t had any of the throttling or keyboard issues on this. For this price it’s a great deal.

  • +2

Decent deal but only big problem: It has Apple's unresponsive 'butterfly' keyboard.

    • +4

I might be an exception but never had an issue with my 2016 MBP keyboard.

      • +2

never had an issue with my 2016 MBP keyboard as well

        • +1

macbook air 2019 keyboard is all fine …..

      • I believe what @doublem referred to is that the keyboard is flat and doesn't give you much response when you type, ie. it's closer to your tablet's on-screen keyboard than to a traditional mechanical keyboard. In a way.

Which is not a deal breaker to most you, but to some it makes it a huge difference for various reasons.

        • No he's referring to the very high failure rates with these keyboards.

          • @mattythecapybara: He said "unresponsive" right there. Not weak, breaking, poorly-built - that keyboard's problems as well.

In terms of ergonomics, interfaces, mechanics that keyboard indeed doesn't give you as much feedback as other keyboards (because of the very little way its keys travel), hence it's not as responsive.

          • @mattythecapybara: That's right.

    • +1

They replace the faulty keyboards for 4 years free of charge:

      • +3

Even if they do, why would you pay $3000 for a laptop that may have to have its keyboard replaced multiple times? Also what if you want to keep it for longer than 4 years? I still have a 2010 MBP that's never had an issue.

On the other hand I had a 2016 MBP that needed repairing three times in two years (twice keyboard, once logic board). Ended up getting refund under ACL after taking Apple and the reseller to court. Don't make the same mistake as I did, buy something else.

You can get the i7 16” for less or around the same. With better thermal management you’ll end up getting same performance after throttling.

Missed the 32GB and 1TBSSD. Honestly this is not bad. But still the 16” is better after using one.

  • Question all, how many cores does this processor have?

Also, say in the future i get issues with this and send it to apple for warranty - they give you a 16 inch model instead yeah. Cheers. Asking for a friend obviously

    • +1

      6 cores.

It depends, if they don't have a 15.4 to replace then yes you get a 16. But that's unlikely to happen, just because they stop selling it in retail doesn’t mean they don’t have parts.

    • i9 has 8.

I don’t think they will give you a 16. Will be the same model

"Mac products may obtain service and parts from Apple or Apple service providers for 5 years after the product is no longer manufactured — or longer where required by law."

    • I had a 2014 15" Macbook Pro that had a touchpad issue and took it back to an Apple store and they were swamped at the time and just wanted to get me out the door so they gave me a brand new 2015 Macbook Pro as a replacement, restart on the warranty and all but I did get the feeling that this was extremely rare and I highly doubt you'd get a different model entirely as a replacement.

  • +4

the keyboard may upset some people tho. I would just go for the 16 model. a but expensive, specs not as good, but bigger screen and better keyboard. having said that, also depends what are you going to use it for.

    • The keyboard does have a 5 year warranty though, so there's that. But yeah, 16" is, from reviews, much better.

  • -2

    Wow thats expensive

  • +2

Great deal but I just can't deal with the keyboard

I've got this model, and have had to have the keyboard replaced several times. Also, it has the NVRAM/T2 chip bug where 1 out of 3 times times it just won't turn on- requiring the NVRAM reset key combo to start.

Both well known problems in this model.

I reckon the ball was dropped on these. I'll hold out for the 16"

    • reckon we'll be seeing similar prices 1 year from now then??

  • +1

I don't hate the keyboard, but I did have an issue with the space bar - lucky some compressed air fixed it.

  • +1

I just purchased the new 16" for 5k. On one hand I kick myself as this could have saved some $$$, on the other hand I now have the latest model with some better specs. A quandary for sure.

    • As long as those better specs are worth ~$1700.

  • +4

This laptop or a mortgage payment.. Decisions??

  • im not sure about the old non-travel keyboard tbh

  • How would this compare, in performance, to the 2020 16" base model?

    Thanks OP. Already bought one.

OW sent me an email reads "We need to manually confirm your order - this should not take more than 30 minutes to confirm. Once this is completed, we will send you an order confirmation email and start fulfilling/processing the order. " While it has been 3 hrs.

    • +2

Yeah OW have been getting smashed for weeks. Their phones are impossible to get through and the fraud check process is taking longer than normal.

They had my order and my friend's confirmed in around 4 business hours.

      • Thanks for sharing your timeline.

        • +2

For further timeline information… it arrived 1 business day after order confirmation. Shipped from Brisbane OW warehouse to elsewhere in Brisbane :)

          Enjoy!

  • +1

I would get it if I actually needed the upgrade. I'm still using a MBP Retina 15" from 2012 (with the highest spec possible then) and it's given me no problems as yet for me.

    • +1

      Exactly the same boat here.

I also hope that some options without the touchbar come out before my current MBP is not usable anymore (in 1-2 years, unless a mechanical failure).

  • Recently bought a 2009 MBP for $200. It has a beautiful 17" screen. Added 4GB RAM, replaced the HD with 250GB SSD and upgraded to Mojave (plenty of online instructions). Been using it as WFH laptop. Multitask Office, Teams etc. all running smoothly and perfectly. Only exception is Zoom. It broadcasts your video but unable to process incoming video ie. everyone can see you but you see no one.

$3300 of junk, thermalthrottles like crazy

Who has 3k+ to spend on a laptop. this isn't a "bargain"

    • That's like saying the average car out there costs only $40k, who has $80k+ to spend on a car…

      • +1

Haha this is OzBargain, the average car is only $500!

    How is this https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/macbook-pr…
for AUD3095. I don't do any graphic intensive work. I also use some windows programs and plan to have the dual boot using bootcamp - Any information on from where and which version of windows 10 should i purchase would be great

    • Get the 16" version unless you wanna be getting keyboard fixed all the time.

      • Thanks but 16" is far more expensive at 4377. I want 1TB storage. For keyboard issues I have read that putting a Silicon cover will prevent dust/debris from ruining the keyboard.

        • Okay good luck..

        • Does the better graphic card worth $200?

          • -4

@sicaboy: I think you'd be better off spending the $200 on a grammarly subscription.

  • looking for a new laptop but i just don't think a mac suits someone so used to windows. very good price and find though op

    • +2

To be honest the everyday difference between Mac OS and Windows from an ease of use perspective isn't that different.

At the end of the day you get your work done.

      • Depends on what work you are doing. Generally any technical software (esp. in engineering) is just not available on Mac. If you are just using Office then its ok on Mac but has more features on Windows. The main use case for Mac seems to be if you use image or photo editing software or are coding and want a single machine to run multiple OS.

  • OOS in vic online

    • Only stock left is in NSW. Apparently there's 8.

      • I was expecting it to be OOS earlier than that haha, it is a good deal and I jumped on. Normally shops don't offer any discounts on customised models, they only sell base models at 10% and gift cards can be stacked + TRS.

        • Yeah I caved and bought one. Where did you get discount gift cards for Officeworks?

          • +1

@obit11: I didn't, I couldn't find any for Officeworks. There use to be some rewards selling discounted gift cards tho. What I meant was that base models can benefit from 10% off sales + discount on GCs and TRS but models like this won't benefit from 10% sales.

  • Apparently there is two left in NSW. All other states OOS

  • For MBPCTO560G, the cheaper alternative, at this time there is 16 in NSW, 11 in VIC, 6 in WA, 10 in QLD.

  • +2

Caved in and bought cheaper model with 560x, don’t think I need Vega. Very good sound quality for a laptop, heard 16” version wound do even better but I’m happy with this machine. Keyboard does feel a bit strange, more like tack switches. Love the space grey colour, like hard anodised but not sure if it really is.

    • +1

I bought the Vega 20 and it's still sitting in the box, I am too scared to open it haha it is so beautiful!! I don't care about the keyboard as I'll be mostly docking it. I am new to the Mac world so keen to see how it all goes :)

  • I know this is like coming to Christmas Party at Easter but has anyone seen or know of any of these being still available. I spoke with an Officeworks store who had one but it was a return and they were awaiting Apple to decide whether to bin it or fix it. Anyway and leads on availability appreciated.

    • +1

I would say all stock is gone and won't be coming back. Next best bet would be the deals on the 16" higher spec model provided you don't need 32GB - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/538328

      • I appreciate the comment though the 32gb is important. Will have to settle for secondhand I think.
