    Expensive af

    • +18

cheaper than the new dell xps 15 of similar spec.

      • -5

and yet not even a touch screen so not even the same case

        • +20

The new XPS 15 without a touchscreen, a 6-core i7 (vs 8-core i9 in this) and 1920x1200 display comes to the same price ($200 more expensive if you consider the OW pricebeat): see here.

          • +2

@donnot: This is on a 'sale', those are just freshly released

            • +12

@Freestyle: In other words, this is currently cheaper than a much lesser-specced XPS. I can't imagine the higher-resolution i9 model coming down to this price for a while, and a lot of people need a laptop now (working at home etc).

            • -3
      • +5

Holy ****! The base model of the new Dell XPS 15 on the US store is $1299USD or about $2013AUD… yet the Aussie store is charging $2799AUD for it…

        I don't get it.

        • +3

Add tax to the US price, plus you'd get dinged for import duties on top of the GST.

          • @voltagex: Ah gotcha, thanks for clarifying. Forgot about import duties.

        • I don’t understand this either. Even with the currency conversion we’re still getting ripped off. Same with stuff from the Apple store.

          • @bindok: We're actually getting a better deal after exchange rates/GST with Apple. E.g. the 16" MBP in this configuration is $2799 in the US, which converts to $4290 + GST = $4719, but it's sold here for $4399.

      • +1

That doesn't make it NOT expensive AF.

    • -1

It'll last a long whiles though. Unless you try to throw it through a door.

      • -5

I think that is the problem I have with a $4000 laptop. It falls off the desk, hard, and it is now worth $0. Or worse, accidentally spill a glass of water over it. Very quick depreciation.

        • +16

Don't buy a car in case you crash it.

        • -1

Or get married just in case she….

        • +2

Actually as someone who owned a macbook, that fell out of my backpack in an airport, the case got a tiny dent on the corner, but the laptop kept work for years. I then sold it for $500.
I'll never buy a laptop in a plastic case ever again, too many of the years have broken, just being in a laptop bag.

    • Yep. I wonder how many of the 85 upvotes have resulted in a purchase?

  • +55

    Thanks OP. Bought 2.

    • +1

      Lol yah right

    • +1

      Only 2?

      • +6

Yeah my high yield investment car took a bit of coin.

        • You have a hummer too?

          • +2

@Pigsy3: No. Apple owners drive Tesla electric cars, or Prius.

  • +10

oh man… more than my cars value..

    • +1

      Decent deposit?

    • +14

TIL you drive a crap car. You should buy a high yield investment car.

  • Cmon mate' you're hurting apple haters with this post. Don't ruin their Monday.

  • -6

No matter the discount the price seems bad value

Can build a desktop and buy a small laptop and still have money left over.

But you’d be the envy of everyone in Starbucks.

    • +17

i can build a small car with money left over as well. Doesnt mean its going to do what this does though

    • +10

Pretty popular machines with software engineers too.

    • +4

But the desktop wouldn't be portable and the laptop wouldn't be able to handle just about any project in the whole Adobe software suite. And the trackpad would be crap instead of a large glass one, screen probably wouldn't be high res IPS, battery life wont' be as long despite the battery adding half an inch to the thickness of the cheaper laptop. Keyboard won't be as nice either.

  • +80

Queue the 'expensive' comments with your standard 'i can build 3 gaming rigs for that price' type comments.

People who are buying these laptops do not give a rat's arse about your amazing pc building skills.

      • +12

Pure speed isn't everything, nor should it be.

          • +6

            @shellshocked: You missed the point.

            PURE speed isn't everything.

              • +7

@shellshocked: You missed the point as the first sentace was 'Pure speed isn't everything'

You're right that the CPU you have is better for you in your role, but that's not what everyone is doing. It might not do YOUR JOB in a timely manner, but it might do someone elses.

What if your job was to edit on FCPX? Pure speed suddenly isn't everything. I'm not going to push forward with multiple different samples/scenarios, or actually bother replying to you at all anymore. But hopefully you get it now.

                • +2

@jeppetto367: Given that my old 2015 Macbook, runs Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Premier perfectly fine, I have a high res screen which is important to me and a much lighter laptop in a stronger case as I travel with it a lot. Yeah I agree I'm happy to give up some CPU speed for these other features at the price point. I see the same ridiculous arguments in camera forums, people wanting all these features to take better photos, yet professional photographers manage to still take amazing phhotos with lower specced cameras. People just need to realise what suits their needs are not what everyone else weends or wants and move on.

          • +1

@shellshocked: Applying that logic, you carry around your desktop beast with a compact display and plug in an extension cord at cafes and other places.

            People love their bubbles.

        • Then everyone should just buy an LG gram

      • +10

It's always AMD and Android fanboys that feel the need to attack Apple posts.

If you're so happy about the value you're getting with your AMD builds, happy for you. I for one, have two rigs myself, one intel based, and the other AMD, guess what, neither are perfect, I use each one for certain games/functions. As for my wife, she loves her Mac, and guess what, you'll laugh, but her 6 year old Mac sometimes feels better and smoother than my rigs that have been built in the last 2-3 years. Everything has +'s and -'s.

OP just posting for those that like their Macs, this is a decent saving.

        • -1

You do know there is an AMD GPU in this pro don't you? It's an entry level 5500.

          • +7

@shellshocked: Very well aware, i'm saying it's the Ryzen AMD fanboys who are so skilled at building future proof pc's for under $1k that come on these Apple posts and feel the need to roast the OP every single time.

            • -1

@tightm8: I think you are just stereotyping unfortunately. Though it was fun supporting new Apple users years ago, who spent a lot money on a computer, trying to game with an entry level GPU.

              • +10

@shellshocked: You are absolutely right shellshocked, these won't perform anywhere near as well as an 8 core desktop with an Nvidia GTX 2080 Super. Thank you for reminding us all about our ignorance, and please forgive our miserable lack of understanding about the value of hardware and graphical settings.

These Mac's game pretty well at medium settings at 1080p. Might not be 4k at maximum settings, but it's still gaming and still a lot of fun. If you need more pixels and higher settings than that to enjoy the game as a casual gamer, the game probably isn't very good.

Most of my Mac laptops have lasted for 5-6 years before I think about replacing them, thanks to high quality displays, speakers and software, used for occasional photo and video editing, light gaming, but mostly web browsing and word/powerpoint/excel professional use. I'd still recommend a mid-range Mac laptop to anyone that wants a high quality product that they can rely on (more so than a PC). I've yet to own a PC laptop which lasted more than 3 before noticing a considerable slow down, though the PC desktop still chugs along fine after 4 years.

In summary, each to their own, and you might love a boosted Toyota 86, and others might like their BMW M3. Both good for their purposes, and one might be faster than the other, but it's hard to fault good build quality and the daily enjoyment that can bring.

In reality I know you're just trying to deter us because the price is so amazing and you want them all for yourself, so don't forget to thank the OP.

                • -3

@Millikano: Thanks for taking six paragraphs to get to your point. Note you can get an 8 core laptop with a 2080 cheaper than this one with it's entry level graphics card.

                • +4

                  @Millikano:

Most of my Mac laptops have lasted for 5-6 years before I think about replacing them

Thanks. Am planning to buy a 16” MBP and need all the validation i can get to follow through.

        • +6

Yep my 7 year old MacBook Pro still performs perfectly. Can’t edit 4K content videos but it handles 2.7k fine and anything else I throw at it!

        • +17

Well, I bought a retail boxed Ryzen CPU from umart the other day, and as I was carrying it back to my car, I was propositioned by an attractive female who said, OMG, you have a Ryzen CPU, thats awesome, you must be so cool. And 45 minutes later it was all happening. So all I can say is, Apple owners, you're passing up an incredible opportunity here.

          • @cannedhams: Well it's better than saying "Siri how much do you love me?"

          • +1

@cannedhams: I retract my previous 5* paragraphs, I’ve never been more wrong.

          • +3

@cannedhams: I come here for the deals and comments, but stay for the cannedhams

        • Hopefully your wife doesn't ever want to go back to android if she has stored photos on it. Almost impossible to transfer. Most people give up and pay for the rip off to their cloud storage.

          • @Lets Make Sandwiches: Are you suggesting that it's difficult to transfer photos from macOS to something else?

            • @TimCinel: Yeah, MacOS Photos library in ~/Pictures is just a folder. Click "show package contents" and photos are stored in the "originals" subfolder.

Windows fanbois have this annoying habit of just assuming they know how to use macos because it's "easier" and "dumbed down".

It's just that Apple has done a great job of hiding the *nix stuff. Open your startup disk in finder then click cmd-shift-. to unhide/hide the hidden folders. Most users don't even realise they are there.

              • -1

@lunchbox99: Show package contents displays a bunch of folders by date. How about being able to open the pictures app and transfer from there?

Ever tried using android dara transfer? Mac sh1ts itself everytime and doesn't work.

Apple don't want you shifting to android, there's no doubt about that.

                • +1

@Lets Make Sandwiches: Select all and then File->Export Unmodified Original.

However, the photos inside the originals folder all have the same exif data as when they were imported into photos app. So if you just import that into any other app - windows, android, linux… whatever - it will read the exif data.

Not sure how this is "almost impossible to transfer" and stopping anyone moving to anything. The original photos are clearly visible and you can do whatever you like to them.

      • +3

there is no laptop with an AMD CPU in it that has speakers, trackpad, screen or OS as good to use as the MBP. Those count for more than raw power

    • +15

No you don't understand. As shellshocked correctly points out, everyone should only buy the fastest computer available. All other considerations are moot. Size, portability, operating system? None of these things matter.

I was gonna buy a rPi zero W but instead feel obligated to buy a linux based supercomputer instead. It's the only objectively correct choice. /s obviously

        • +7

Tell me more how XPS 15 renders FCPX footage faster than this MBP

          • +1

@Iam12: I don't think they were referring to people stuck using an Apple only application. Plenty of other video editor applications out there.

          • -5

@Iam12: tell me more about dumb apple exclusive software that I dont care about

        • +3

these do not have the butterfly switch

        • +4

Everyone at my work who bought a surface pro never used the touch screen and has reverted to a normal laptop. I personally have a latitude 7400 2-in-1, which works better as a laptop than a SP and also has touch and thick tablet mode for occasional touch use (like marking up documents etc).

    • +10

can probably buy thousands of abacus instead, tens of thousands if you buy the components in bulk and assemble the abacuses yourself

      • Waiting for a good deal on abacus components now.

    • +8

My 7 year old MacBook Pro is still ticking along perfectly fine. Buy right once or keep paying over and over. People knocking MacBook’s obviously have never owned one and just look purely at spec sheets. OS has a massive part to play also.

  • +14

Best laptop available, at present, and the OW price looks great.

    • +11

Not for everyone, I'd take the new XPS 15/17 over this in a heartbeat

      • I'm looking to get Mac os running on one of those new xps's. bit of a risk but those new xps's look great

      • +2

Except the XPS line is plagued with QC issues. The odds of getting a defect free unit is sadly quite slim.

I bought the new XPS 13 and had to return it due to a range of QC issue. Amazing design though.

        • They have in the past, but most have been ironed out. And it's a massive exaggeration to say you only have a 'slim' chance of getting a unit with no issues - the vast majority have no issues. And we don't know about the new XPS range. Also don't forget the absolutely abysmal keyboard issues macbooks have had in recent years, which are just as (ir)relevant

  • +4

I don't consider this a deal, but for those who say these are expensive, are you just writing off this whole category of laptop? e.g. You consider XPS 15 and Carbon X1 Extreme Gen2 to be expensive.

This seems like a weird configuration. i9 cpu but only 16GB RAM? You're not planning to run Chrome?

    • +2

This is the standard higher end config that Apple offers. Anything extra is going to be a custom build to order machine and it's hard to get a deal on those.

    • +1

i9 16gb is plenty for most tasks. I run chrome with 20 tabs, android and iphone emulators/simulators and debug react native projects on this config and its quite good. From memory sits at about 15gb from that rough usage.

  • +36

I have this exact spec in space grey and confirm that I do not give 2 craps about your beast gaming pc that you built for cheaper

    • +12

Same, I've been using one since release and love it. I'm a die hard PC guy and think that windows laptops are just not in the same level, especially the trackpad and speakers.

      • +2

Me too (sort of - I custom built mine with the speed bumps (2.4G/32G RAM/8G video and 2TB SSD)) and it's an excellent beast

      • +1

Agree re trackpad and speakers, but the keyboard on this isn't as good as XPS/thinkpad keyboards for mine

  • +12

I've considered this before but am holding out in the hopes that the 2020 version will have a better webcam. 720p webcam doesn't feel right on a $4k MacBook.

    • It’s bloody atrocious considering the iPhone front facing camera puts it to shame 😂

    • +2

Yea definitely an annoying aspect, but inevitable due to how thin the lid is- there’s just no space to put in a camera with a larger sensor or better optics, can’t really compare to a much thicker phone. Just gotta wait till camera tech catches up, because doubt Apple would choose to go for a thicker lid at this point

    • +1

Hey, some of us really appreciate the blurring! :)

  • -4

  • Macbook Pro 16 Inch 2.6GHz 6-Core 9th-Generation Intel Core i7 Processor Silver 512GB MVVL2X/A - $ 3449.9 @ Costo online and OW price match for $ 3277.49… Seems like a better deal..

    https://www.costco.com.au/TVs-Electronics-Technology/Compute…

    • +6

Half the ssd, 2 less cores, lower spec GPU. Depend on your use case. For many people probably wouldn't notice any difference.

      • Agreed !!

    • +2

have you been successful with OW price matching Costco?

    • Do you need a cosco membership for OW to pricematch?

    • Yeah even refurb at apple for this is only $3229, so a good price with OW price match. For me I couldn't tell the difference with performance between the two machines in my use case.

  • +10

I never understood these comments re building a computer much cheaper. I have a $3k+ Pc at home and it gets less than 10% of the use of my MBP.

    • +1

That might be your personal situation. Plenty of other people out there that have spent 3k on a PC and actually use it for something.

      • +5

Plenty of people spend $3k+ on a MBP and use it for something too……so it's horses for courses.

      • +4

Absolutely, I agree with you entirely and what I meantioned in my second sentance is my personal situation (which can be totally different to the next person).

This then goes back to my first sentance, the comments that others post re building much cheaper are not needed and irrelevant. As this deal isn't targeted at those types of people.
