Not sure what happened with them aiming for a $349 RRP launch. Price has been $399 retail as long as I've seen this for sale in Australia
The Australian dollar has lost about 15% since the launch announcement, a likely contributing factor.
Yeah a few sellers had it up at 7am on launch day for RRP but you had to be very quick. Got mine for $349 from mwave but later on the prices went up.
It sold at RRP for about 5 minutes at launch before everyone started raising their prices. Probably not going to get a much better price for one at the moment including delivery.
HN has these at RRP a few weeks ago, keep calling around for stock.
that's were i got mine have to say it rocks by far the best android player i have used so far and i have tested a lot of them
Crazy how this media streamer is a similar price to a PS4 Pro…
And more than an Apple TV 4K too.
I love my shield but Nvidia need their heads checked price wise
Yeah, the one advantage it has over the Apple TV 4K is supporting both Dolby Vision and TrueHD Dolby Atmos, and that doesn't make it worth almost double the price of an ATV4K.
Let alone dealing with the annoying interface.
You wouldn't buy this if you just wanted a streamer, this lets you do things like run a plex server off it as well.
@[Deactivated]: And let's not forget that it's also a game console if you get the Shield controller or a Dualshock 4 or Xbox One S controller.
So it's either a video streamer, plex server or game console.
You don't have the disvantage of running TvOS which is locked and lacks software. With shield you can use pretty much most of the Android stuff and sideload as well.
Apple TV 4K is closer to the Shield stick/tube and nowhere in same class as the Shield Pro.
The Shield tube is more comparable to the Apple TV 4k than the Shield Pro, as it has the same RRP of $249, and both are pure streamers (although technically you can playback local content via microSD on the tube), both lack USB, and both lack the ability to run Plex server.
…although IMO the Shield tube has far more advantages (expandable storage, audio passthrough, superior remote, superior app support, superior Plex experience, superior upscaling, YouTube 4k, inbuilt ChromeCast, true 24fps, 30fps, and 60fps support etc).
but i sold my apple tv 1st gen jailbroken for $350 long ago
OzBargain 2020.
Yeah, let's support a company selling above RRP and adding a phoney eBay discount.
Pass.
Bit pessimistic dude. This one comes with a free 50ML hand sanitiser!
Oh really? I am ordering one shield just for sanitizer then.
$377.10 hand sanitiser.
Free NVIDIA Shield TV Pro.
That alone is worth a neg
I copped it with the RRP deal previously…
Yes you could blame the price on the $ exchange, but I will look at somewhere in the chain someone is price gouging. Either retailer or distributor.
Myself all I am wanting is the new remote, for my 2017 Shield, that seems not to have been released here yet, and yest I bet that will be price gouged as well.
Any news on GeForce Now support?
Many price rises in recently have mainly been due to the crashed AUD during COVID-19 the landed costs of goods into Australia has increased and might be a very valid reason why prices on some items have increased.
For example, the same time last year the AUD was 0.715 vs now being at 0.635 to the USD so on current rates that more than an 11% drop but we've gone as low as 0.573 about 25% drop (with a peak drop down to 0.551, but that was a short period of time)… but that gives you an idea of the volatility so depending on when goods have been imported is going to affect product prices…
We import goods at our work and it's been a very difficult time so I do have some sympathy for good and prices at the moment as we are suffering and had made losses on selling most imported items at a loss for this month but have had to increase prices for any new orders going forward which is out of our hands but the AUD is improving so I would suggest people to 'wait' if they want lower prices as it seems things are improving
Not just the AUD drop, but anything air freighted has gone up since most of it used to go in spare capacity on passenger flights.
Way up. Like 3x the price up.
If someone just need this for Netflix, Prime and Youtube…. Is this worth buying or buy Panasonic UB820 4K player which will have benefits of playing 4k discs along with Netflix, Prime and Youtube in full 4K support?
No idea why negged….
Anyway I got that very player. It's apps like all disc players aren't going to be of the same quality, updates, snappiness of a Shield which is comfortably the most powerful box.
If you want 4k disc support that should be your decision. Don't look at it for its smart features, particularly if you are invested in such quality things like 4k discs and mid to high end players.
The $72 delivered Vodafone TV will do all those things in 4K too.
Almost $400 for this thing seems crazy to me.
I was going to suggest the VTV as well. It's much better since the recent firmware update. If all you need it for is streaming vids, this is the machine to get. I have nVidia 2017 as well. Of course, the nVidia is much better but the functionality and usability is very similar. Netflix endorsed 4k and proper Android TV.
I stopped using VTV (got Shield) due to following:
- No official Amazon Prime App
- Multi-channel audio passthru for external receiver is broken
Did the new update fix any of the above?
If you just want to stream stuff this is pretty much the worst thing you can buy as it's very very expensive for that. An apple tv or any android box is a much better option.
This is a great media/gaming unit but its ridiculously overpriced
To be honest I got one here in WA but after setting up a friend's I couldn't see the huge benefit from 2017, never even bothered opening it, gonna try and flog it locally for cost n driving back forth to pick it up.. .. nobody in WA has stock so hopefully I get rid of it quick covid19 economics is hurting.. I reckon $360 to $370 is fair.. hoping it sells quick tried it on eBay but just damn middle eastern ppl wanting it shipped worldwide no chance was going to ship oseas and had said specifically no oseas buyers they ignored so took i it down.
Plenty of the tube version at PLE $239 cheaper than computer alliance with their discount. Free normal shipping or $15 express
https://www.ple.com.au/Products/639690/NVIDIA-Shield-TV-Andr…
Remember ebay and PayPal will fleece you close to 14%.
Another reason i took it down figured out id be out of pocket..ill sell locally gumtree or Facebook etc.. it's sealed, has PLE invoice for warranty reckon it will sell , but who knows in these weird economic times..
Import from Gumtree for 2 free listings a month….
But KEEP screen shots. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't…. And I was asked for proof by one ebay rep…
Glad I pulled the trigger and got this from B&H USA last year and was cheaper than this.
I'm seriously confused as to why you would buy this over an Apple TV.
Not being an Apple fan boy I just don't get it - is there extra gaming capabilities I'm missing here? You're at XBX or PS4P money almost.
It's an excellent emulation device as well. Can act as a capable Plex Media Server too on its own which is quite unique too.
If youve got a good sound system hooked up then the Shield can output lossless HD audio like Atmos etc which a lot of devices cant do. I havent heard it but im sure if youve parted with your notes on a good sound system and TV then you would want to pump out some seriously room rattling movie scenes.
But yeah, if you dont have the capable hardware supporting it - its overkill.
Similar situation here and absolutely agree.
The Shield Pro has many more features vs the Apple TV:
Extended functionalities via Apps:
So what your saying is…. It's superior..
24fps, 30fps, and 60fps support
Apple TV supports refresh rate switching, including all the above framerates + 50Hz. I have both, and this is one thing that works slightly better on Apple TV. Refresh rate switching support differs app to app on our Shield, whereas all apps refresh rate switch on the Apple TV.
Superior Plex experience (supports Dolby Vision…)
DV support is present on the Apple TV as well (at least with Infuse), but it's single-layer only.
On the Apple TV, you will get dropped frames for 24fps, 30fps, and 60fps content, as 24Hz, 30Hz, and 60Hz are not supported, and are played back at 23.976 Hz / 29.97Hz / 59.94Hz instead:

There's no Dolby Vision support within Plex on the Apple TV, but yeah I know Infuse has it, and I believe Infuse recently gained support for lossy Dolby Atmos via E-AC3 too?
@kirt: Oh crap! My bad, thanks for setting me straight.
I was looking at getting one to run a Plex server on, so I can just use my NAS as a NAS and not have to worry about it transcoding.
I gave up transcoding years ago as it smahed my NAS. My 2017 Sony TV plays x264 and some x265 with Kodi just fine. Maybe give Kodi a go before buying one of these?
Seems like unless you want to play android games or set up emulators or actually run a plex server on it, you're better off with any cheaper android box or apple tv.
Fancy that, another retailer selling it at RRP unlike a few PC stores gouging people…
Joyce Mayne = Harvey Norman. Not a good or bad thing.. just FYI
I doubt they will have local stock, n warehouse same as hardly normal who have no stock but you never know your luck
Why not post this as a deal, if you pay with gift card you would essentially offset the delivery fee
Thanks, took a point and grabbed this one instead, fingers crossed!
Can a VPN be installed on this unit? Been trying to find ways with the free HBO TV shows to cast to TV.
Can sideload
Have this and love it. Got it a couple of months ago from Amazon US for around $350 landed.
Use it for plex, Netflix, chromecast, youtube. Backlit remote with microphone is quite nice.
Use it with a logitech k600 keyboard also for Web browsing
What makes it better than a much cheaper Android TV device for you though? I’ve got a Voda TV that was only $72 and it does everything you list.
I’m really struggling to work out why you’d spend $350 to do the things you listed.
If you have ever tried to run 4k files or something like a plex server on one of those devices you will understand.
I have last years shield and it is several times faster/smoother than my old xiaomi mi box.
Not trying to run a Plex server on it, nor did Save Medicare indicate he was. I've got a much better Plex server setup than a TV set top box.
My Voda TV box doesn't have any issues streaming 4K (H264 and HEVC) files from my Plex server, so my question would be have you tried it?
I think the VodaTV ain't bad at all for $70. Why pay $350?
Can you run a VPN on the Voda TV?
You can sideload VPN apps.
Well after their latest firmware update lots things don't run, especially anything plugged into a usb port hdd etc
Is there a work around for this? I will be using it for Netflix, YouTube, Disney Plus & playing 4k rips from an external hard drive. If the VTV can do all of this, I'll just get one of those.
@GoonerAR: Don't think so but check the forums on whirlpool
@Wayne7497: Will do, thanks mate.
What web browser do you use?
Puffin TV Browser works quite well
Is it better than a PS4 pro for media content?
PS4 lacks support for many audio and video codecs of the streams within those containers. Have a look here: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps4/music/mp_form…
It states: MKV Video: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2 Audio: MP3, AAC LC, AC-3 (Dolby Digital)
So it won’t be able to playback DTS audio or HDR video with BT2020 for example, also no H265 support, in which most 4K videos are encoded.
2017 model for $293
https://www.budgetpc.com.au/945-12897-2506-000-nvidia-shield…
I wish this has dedicated audio out :(
harvey Norman $350, i bought it 2nd Apr.
attention, if you use asus router, this nvidia box may have problem connect to your router, i see many people have same problem. you can google it
Is it worth upgrading to this from a 2017 model?
Doesnt seem like it for this price
Atmos and upscaling, don't think much else. So in a word, no.
Still don't see what the hype about the Shield is all about. Had it for 2 weeks. Slower than a Sloth, games didn't work, crashed most of the time. Certainly does not worth this ridiculous amount just to "stream" video or as a media server/player.
Returned after the 2 weeks for a full refund.
At the end of the day its still a box running Android TV OS - which can be pretty average at the best of times.
Looks like people love it. I cant even see a use for this if you have a ps4. I never was interested at it. Looks overpriced and good for some people though.
I've got a Voda TV, a Chromecast Ultra, and a PS4 pro. What can this thing do that I can't do already?
Act as Plex server
Emulation too
Xbox x can do 4K YouTube Netflix etc. and play media from NAS or USB hard drive. On top of that can play games properly. Similar price
This can be that NAS (Well atleast as far as Plex goes).
I do get your point however. It's overpriced hardware thanks to Nvidia cornering the high end market (just like their GPUs).
Install Kodi into Xbox can play anything on my NAS drive, even 4K bluray disk image. Through NFS/SMB mount.
I never get the idea why people need use transcoding server,
Is it possible to do the same with a PS4 pro?
Well my family access my Plex Server… Internally and externally on many different devices.
@scuderiarmani: Do you have a NAS as well? What do you do for storage?
@fredblogs: DS918 with 4 8tb Reds
@scuderiarmani: Why wouldn't you just run plex server on your synology?
Pretty much what I'm after. Will the Xbox X play 4k mkv files without any issues?
If you're not sure what the device is used for or why it's better than the $72 Voda TV Box, then you're probably the wrong target market for this product.
I had the 2019 Shield Tube & just recently upgraded to the 2019 Shield Pro and no regrets paying retail for it. Everything is seamless, Dolby Vision/Atmos passthrough on Netflix/Plex, Plex Media Server with a HDD attached to it, VPN, AI Upscaling (which is great) all working fine. No connectivity issues with my Asus router either (reported by another user above).
There's simply no comparison with the VTV (which I also have) but for the $72 price it does its job fine. Just my opinion, but I think $350 is reasonable to pay for the best Android TV box, if you're in the market for one.
How about firestick 4k ?
Off the top of my head I think the fire stick lands somewhere in between the the nvidia and the Voda tv in terms of power and features.
~at a AUD85 price point, a damn site better than both VTV and Shield Pro 2019
Since when was above RRP a deal?
