can you please put " refurbished"in the post heading..

Not bad for a $170~ refurbished laptop!

  • Nice deal for a refurbished unit. I'm expecting all the covers (lid, palm rest, keyboard) has been replaced? If so that's an awesome deal :)

    • +1

yeah unless the casing has been replaced, hope its not secondhand looking with worn palm rest etc, looks shocking if so.

      • +2

a secondhand laptop is what it is, I doubt very much that anything on it has been replaced.

      • +3

Highly unlikely that ANYTHING has been replaced.

They just would have reformatted, checked the battery holds (ANY) charge, and that the machine boots up.

  • +1

    has pcmcia. No charger/power supply?

    • +1

i looked into the details and it says no warranty for the battery !!! I think for a laptop a good battery is a must ;-)) otherwise it would be a desktop ;-))

      • +2

we have an old hp laptop like this with < 5 minutes battery life could always look on eBay for a replacement I suppose.

      • +2

It's a secondhand/refurbished unit. No warranty on the battery is pretty typical, especially at this price.

Almost got one the last time this deal was on ozstock. I like the 1280x800 res more than the current 1366x768 standard. For those looking for a portable unit, I believe this thing only has ~4hrs battery life on average from memory. For me, this is an issue, so I didn't get one. Plus is has Vista.

replacement 6300mah battery from Aubatt $125.

        • +5

That's a consideration but that bumps the total cost up to around $300 which doesn't make it much of a deal anymore.

In comparison, I spent $420 on a new Lenovo E320. For the extra $120, I now have an i3 with 4Gb ram, four times more HDD space, a newer OS, battery life that's 6hrs+ and a full 1yr warranty (bonus 1yr from my credit card on top of that). Case cost me $9 from a MLN sale earlier this year and the mouse was free from Logitech's 100% rebate thing.

I used this model at work few years ago - between 2007-2010. It's was OK laptop - if you don't abuse it much like most of our support personels who taken it off-road most of the time. From memory, my was exact spec with this plus extra 1Gb ram (2GB total).

    Pro:
    - Good for general app/Internet browsing, youtube
    - OK for movie - didn't try any HD.
    - Screen is visible when under brightlight
    - Light, if you want a netbook usage but with a bit more grunt
    - Good arm rest.

    Cons:
    - Lot of bloatwares - as usual with Dell, HP, etc
    - Battery can good for 1hr when new, then about 15-20mins after 6 months or so.
    - A bit hot for lap usage!

    • Good summary… battery is worse than what I've read so it seems. Glad I didn't get one then. Had they managed to squeeze 6hrs out of the battery and gave it either XP or Win7 and 2Gb RAM, it would have been more suitable for my needs. Oh well, thank god Lenovo had that sale on E320's 2 weeks ago.

Hmm… Maybe it's just me, but with the abundance of $300 15" laptops I just don't see why you wouldn't spend another ~$100 to get a new one instead of refurbished. I mean, this isn't a bad deal per se, but spending just a little more to get a non-refurbished new model with full warranty and newer tech, not to mention Windows 7, just seems a lot better.

Unless you downgrade the D420 to XP I reckon it'll struggle a bit with only 1GB RAM, and 80GB HDD will be enough for your standard office apps but not a whole lot else, and a 1.2GHz processor is really going to show its age if you start installing newer versions of software/OS.

    • AND they usually have bigger HDDs, and they can have HDMI and better OS amd…

  • shoud put 12 inch screen in heading as well , but sounds good for the money

  • is this the 1.8" hdd model or the interal connector hdd? which may make it hard to upgrade the hard drive

    • +1

Yep. We support these at work and they do not use the standard 2.5" HDD's…

You will generally find better deals than this on eBay

Nowadays "refurbished" often seems short for "used but given a wipe with a cloth". In that case used can be better because at least you get details of the actual item while refurbished is a lucky dip. I'd want to know some details, e.g. when IBM sold refurbished ThinkPads on eBay, they described a little more about what that meant (e.g. new battery etc.)

  • +2

How is this refurbished and not just used?
A proper "refurb" at this age would obviously mean a new battery for a start, and probably should be a new case.
Problem is sellers think it is OK to make bald-faced lies like this, and pretend not to know what refurbished means. Soon the word is meaningless.

On the plus side - this is a real portable at 1.5kg. Not as light as other 12" models without optical drive, but still good.

    • Unless you after some spare parts, I wouldn't bother with refurbished laptops. You don't know what the previous owners usage like - could be saleman, road warrior, or just a deskbound secretary.

The most likely item you want to replace is the HD, then the battery. With that extra purchases, you may as well get one of those $400-$500 laptop deals for much better spec and warranty.

With Dell (we only deal with Dell at work so not sure about others like HP or Lenovo), I find the hinges got broken or loose very quickly after 1-2yr heavy usage. We had stack of them at work (not just this model) because of this.

I checked my account and realised that there are 2 orders (3pcs per order) that I have placed but timed out and still showed up in My Orders list, so I think that I have held up to 6 of this laptops. So if anyone who missed out can contact me :) I will try to contact ozstock to see if I can continue with those orders :)

  • I used a d420 before at work, which is the previous version with 1St Gen core duo CPU.

light and portable but I rather get a netbook cost this laptop use 1.8"HD and its way slow.

with 1gb ram windows will thrash the HD real bad

  • +1

Help me understand why anybody would buy a secondhand laptop with these specs at this price when you can can buy a brand new one with warranty for not much over $300 if you bargain hunt?

    • I suppose the 12" screen (i.e. portability with a better screen/resolution than most netbooks) is the main draw card and most laptops in that $300-400 price range are either 10" netbooks or 15.6" laptops. Still, I'd prefer a netbook as their battery life is much better.

  • I'm pretty sure that the hdd is SATA, how come core 2 dou Running IDE drive?

  • I used this more than 3 years ago. It was really light, a bit sluggish (and this was on XP!).

Good for road warriors who use Outlook and light Excel/Word usage.

Bloody cheap price but then again it is refurbished/used and >3 yrs out of date…

Sigh. Can OZbargainers avoid to be OZ scavengers? This piece of juck should go to recycle bin straight away.

  • hahaha! i got heaps of these at ross auction (in perth) about six months ago for $100 each (along with lots of lenovo t61's cd2 7200) and sold them for $250, they're not bad, but i prefer the lenovos and still using one now
