This is a pretty decent bundle (if you don't already own them)

Shame there's no Sins of a Solar Empire. You could have one match last you through the entirety of lockdown lol

  • Picked this up, thanks.

Star control 2 was one of my all time favourite game. It is avail fro free as Ur Quran Master as an open source game.

4X Games is the technical term and yes, the Star Control series was one of the pioneering titles in the genre, though the first three games are quite dated by now and the most recent title, Star Control: Origins is heavily simplified and a more cartoony/less serious title than its predecessors.

Galactic Civilisations is III is a lot more accessible, modern and still holds up very well (given it's 5 years old now).
It's a fairly good synthesis of everything common to all of the great 4X games and once you master the gameplay there, you'll easily be able to transition into other popular 4X titles like Sins of a Solar Empire (also developed by Stardock), the recent Civilisation games and Endless Space/Endless Legend.

Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation however is more of a traditional RTS than a true 4X game (despite being developed by Stardock) with a campaign map and conquest mechanic system similar to the Total War games and a heavier emphasis on large-scale battle tactics like Supreme Commander. If you were a fan of Supreme Commander or its spiritual predecessor Total Annihilation, then it's definitely for you.

      • Thanks for the overview. I think Galactiv Civ III is in my library, so could be worth a look. Whenever I've tried to re-capture the experience from my youth (back to DOS times) I've run into excessive cut scenes, story that I don't care about, etc. Just want to choose to trade, fight or quest. Space Traders RPG on Android is probably the closest thing so far!
