      Does the smell of jet fuel still linger in the air? It's not an airport without it.

      • +2

        Bring some kerosene with you that's what jet fuel is.

      So free parking but potentially free $1000 fine too with nostalgia not being a valid reason to leave the house :)

      Airports should always have at least 1 hour free parking for pick ups and drop offs, always such a rort.

        Totally agree. And having live in Melbourne for many years but travelling frequently to Europe, it's absolutely archaic that MEL still doesn't have a rail link to the city. Just about every international airport I've traveled to does, and it's so much more convenient to board a train than fight traffic to get to the city.

          Until you get to Sydney, where they have a rail link, but it's so exorbitantly priced, that's its often cheaper to take an uber, when travelling in groups of two or more (YMMV depending on the distance).

          • @salmon123: Sydney is indeed a "special" airport. I flew Melbourne to Europe via Sydney a few years ago and the transfer from the domestic flight to the international one was a less than efficient process.

            As for price, I have no doubt Sydney's rail link would be expensive, but most airports charge some kind of premium, at least the ones I remember in Europe do. I think CDG to Paris wasn't that bad, actually.

              Sydney airport takes the cake - $14.90 one way.

              The only more expensive service I can think of, is the Heathrow Express, at 22 pounds.

              At least the Heathrow Express has nicer trains than Sh*tty Rail.

              • @salmon123: Here are train prices from a few airports I've been through in the past 8 years. These are current prices (as best I could tell from googling), I would have paid less at a few places.

                CDG -> Paris - €10.30 ($18.62)
                AMS -> Amsterdam - €5.50 ($9.94)
                OSL -> Oslo - NOK 160 ($24.75)
                FRA -> Frankfurt - Cheap!
                GVA -> Geneva - FREE or CHF3 ($5)
                MXP -> Milan - €13 ($13.50)
                BKK -> Bangkok - pocket change!

                Yet still cheaper than SkyBus Melbourne ($19.75), SkyBus Hobart ($19.50) and SkyBus Auckland ($17) even though SkyBus never had to build rail tracks or train stations.

                  Arguably there's cheaper public bus services in those cities. There's a cheaper bus service in Sydney too, but it's inconvenient (in lots of parts of Sydney), compared to Uber.

            • @dm01: In Singapore, the Airport Station is pretty much like any other station, a trip from there to CBD costs like 2 bucks.

              • @rookie317: Yes, same in Bangkok as far as cost goes.

  • Not sure about similar… Melb airport is free until end of June!

  • got free covid-19 on the way out?

    What a joke!

    Suddenly when nobody needs to use their monopoly they reduce prices…..

    Complete scammers!

    • yeah agree - time for comeuppance

    • Agree - they should offer this till end of this year!

  • The real outcome when the demand drops!! :) :)

  • That's the way it should be permanently!
