How do you use google maps to check?
EDIT: this is some kind of cunning scam. I basically live on the Eastern edge of the national park that this is in, about 7km away as the crow flies. But by road its something like 17km due to the winding nature of the roads and that there are no roads that come directly to the East. So this is only free parking for people who are basically walking distance lol.
Well yeah, it is for local residents. Sorry you've been cunningly scammed out of a google maps search.
The road builders planned to screw stumo over from the start.
Diabolical!
It's the crows' fault.
It's probably crows distance
Same for me. 5 km if the crow flies but 13 km if the crow drives.
I live in The Basin — 4.58kms away as the crow flies, but 14.8kms to drive up Mountain Highway. I had no problem getting this pass.
Ditto. I live just down from the basin and have just been approved. I think if you took the grave road that branches left at the basin it would be fairly direct.
Actually I have a UNIMOG here. That 7km as the crow flies is basically the same as the UNIMOG drives.
The T&C's only say you have to live within a "10km drive" to there, it doesn't specify driving on roads, so I should be G2G.
Same for me, but the management is considerate of these factors.
I applied for it, and they honoured it even though I’m 14.5 kms away.
Not an offer to Victorians but only to local residents who are very close to the mountaintop site.
Targeting up to 2,000 people?Less I reckon. People who live in castles up the mountain don't read ozbargain.
you don't have to go there to see the same views, just go to Burke's Lookout nearby and it is free. There is a plane crash site and memorial as well. It is also next to television towers.
Got an email that I'm out of the catchment - but can still get the pass. See below from them:
You are outside our normal catchment area to qualify for a VIP pass however if you have been to SkyHigh before and you enjoyed your experience and can find the time, all you need to do is post your review on one of the sites below –

Buying positive reviews shouldn't be allowed. Online reviews have become a real scam now.
Did this and got the pass:
Your VIP pass is ready for collection from our gatekeeper the next time you are in the area.
Please talk to our friendly gatekeeper when you come up next and let them know your name and show them confirmation of your address along with a screenshot or print-out of this e-mail and they will provide you with your VIP Pass.
LOL I live 18km away, but probably less than 10km as the crow flies. Got an "approval email" to collect my pass.

I'm assuming if you are in one of their small "local" suburbs they will bend the rules.
I'm within the 10KM via Google Maps. Let's see if I get free parking else I'll be hiking up that fire trail and going the long way.
I've never heard this saying "crow flies" before. Have I been living under a rock all my life?
Ozb learnings !!
Lol you got negged for not knowing a saying. Please learn all sayings before joining OzB.
Alternatively…
Customers are welcome to walk, catch a bus, come by taxi or Uber or cycle up to SkyHigh to avoid the parking fee.
Source: SkyHigh Mount DandenongHonestly even as a local I wouldn't be going, last time I went, the restaurant food was overpriced and crap. When the waiter asked how our meal was and we gave some feedback that it was tough, they turned around and walked off without saying anything. Umm ok.
So yeah, lets review
- You have to pay for parking
- overpriced meals
- sub standard meals
- tourist trap
Yeah won't be rushing back for a meal even with 'free' parking.
Does anyone ever tell the truth when asked at a restaurant? I just say it's good and then tell the truth about it online when I get home

Normally I would agree, everyone says it was good even if it was not, but this steak had the largest uneatable piece of a gristle in it, like 1/3 of the steak. So it was on the plate for all to see, so yes we had been surprised when the waiter didn't give a a sh!t and walked off without saying anything.
Why ask if you don't care!
You can always stop off at Maccas or KFC on the way there.
It's cos the locals know where to park free anyway
Plenty of free parking nearby if you don't mind a small hike.
Such as?
Burkes lookout now has paved parking.
Why do they need your phone number and date of birth to qualify for this?
Thanks. A family member's old pass had expired and they didn't realise that they could apply for a new one.
Wait, they expire?
Man I haven't heard of this place in years. I remember going there as a kid, here's me there in 1984 with parents: https://ibb.co/KrGR2yC
Your mum looks happy.
Your dad concerned.
And you're living the dream - what a view!
Cute kid! I was there often as a teenager
1984-86, part of the CB radio crew, we all piled into cars. Had the best reception up there!
LOL
