  • Computer alliance has this on their ebay store, along with the pro model. I think they also have a 15% ebay plus sale? which would make it cheaper. I was going to hold out for another 20% sale. Also the canadian pricing for these aren't too bad from what I've seen, Aussies got that tax i think.

    • New listing so code is not working, it should work when eBay launches the next discount cycle.

    • can you confirm if the 15% applies to this? i dont have ebayplus yet

      • +2

I have eBay Plus. Both 15% & 20% codes are not working for new NVIDIA shield listings. Code PZAP15 works for other listings in the store.

Its launched in Australia today, available everywhere, listed is th normal price.

  • Is the only difference to the Pro the storage in it? Since this has a Micro SD card, couldn't you just expand the storage anyway?

    • 3gb ram vs 2gb

      • Does this affect anything? Wont be playing games, just streaming stuff.

        • You should be fine, aside from the different shape of the device.

        • I think the extra ram is used for more demanding games.

      • Really? Didn't the old one have 3 anyway? So like, did they make a shittier version to go with the new one too?

    • +1

The non pro runs 32bit android apps while pro runs 64bit

      • Does this affect anything? Wont be playing games, just streaming stuff.

        • The official Android TV standard is 32bit, so it shouldn't affect anyone using it as a media/streaming box

        • As long as Android OS and app developers don't switch to 64-bit only, then it shouldn't be an issue. If Android OS became exclusively 64-bit, then you'd be locked out of OS and app updates in future.

        • +1

If your only purpose is to stream through Netflix or Plex etc.. Then there is no discernable difference between the two.

        • If you plan to run emulated games then it does matter to get 64bit (depending on the emulator). But if just streaming then there is no difference.

You can't connect a USB (eg HDD) to the normal version. Dealbreaker.

    • Pro has a USB port …. this version does not have a USB Port

    • Plex Media server built-in for Pro - which the main draw for me

  • Shopping Express is showing an 8GB Pro Model for $249 here, is that just a listing error? I can't seem to find an 8GB pro anywhere else.

    • +2

The SKU is matching to normal non-Pro model.

    • +1

yeah guessing this is an error that wont be fulfilled. if it is good luck to people that took the chance. zbuster is right SKU matched the tube model.

  • Decent entry price but probably better to wait for a proper sale. I got mine from Amazon a few months back for around US130.

Unfortunately my experience with the device have not been smooth sailing. Had intermittent snow/static when connected to my Samsung N950 soundbar so had to unplug every now and then. Seems to occur randomly, sometimes even when powering up. Not sure what's causing it, ran out of patience after changing different ports and multiple types of "certified" HDMI 18gbps cables and updated to the hotfix updates. Could be the soundbar. Currently running it directly to the tv (B8) and much more stable. Not sure if anyone else had the same issues.

    • you would not have this issue with a 72 dollar vodaphone tv device. i was so impressed i got 2nd for the bedroom

      • i've got the vodafone tv as well for my bedroom, unfortunately it doesnt pass through all the right formats like Dolby Vision/atmos etc. No comparison to the Shield honestly, there's just a lot more settings and the dealbreaker is the support for the different formats and audio/video passthrough.

    • It is the soundbar. If you have no problems when it isn't connected, the soundbar is your issue.

    • This has nothing to do with the shield. If you check online the Samsung n950 soundbar has many issues reported by users.

      • Could be with the LG tv then, partner has reported back saying the problem is still ongoing when using Netflix/PS4.

    • I'm pretty sure I saw an option under device preferences to enable / disable a low freq sound to keep the device active. Probably try turning that off.

      • Done that a few times, doesn't really change anything. Also there's intermittent audio drop out. I believe turning off Dolby Vision seems to fix the bulk of the issues I have.. but it's kind of pointless with it off IMO.. anyway my experience is not to put anyone off the Shield, it's a fantastic device but definitely not foolproof and not exactly plug & play. Still worth buying but maybe if it's <$200.

        • I get image drop outs with using or without using arc.
          Connecting vodfaone tv box

          q90r soundbar

    • I have the N950 and the same issue with it sometimes going to static no matter what the input device is (also on Xbox one). I then have to change the input to something else and back again and it works. For the price tag this Samsung product was a complete dud.

  • Let's hope the remote on the new one works better than the 2017 version.

    • Apparently it is stacks better.

    • +1

It’s not touch sensitive, and the toblerone remote is more average. The batteries are also easier to replace too… It's a more useful size, I guess, but both have their advantages.

The other advantage is that it has the IR transmitter in the remote, so you can hide the box away ( for the tube / pro model ). It's very similar to the apple TV remote, I suppose, except it doesn't have the trackpad.

All in all, it's a good remote. A little average, but it works fine.

You can also sync the Bluetooth xbox controller and the ps4 controller, or a 3rd party model like the steelseries.

      • A little average

"A little average" is a great improvement on the 2017 iteration which is "alot shite".

AAA batteries are a vast improvement over button cells. Not a fan of the Netflix button, but I gather that can be remapped.

        • +2

I will say, it's not something i've had too much drama over, I just got used to it. The worst aspect is probably the fact that it slides around due to the curve and weight, the remote can often just move by itself,

or .. more often, just grabbing the remote changes the volume by accident.

The 2019 remote … I think the 2019 has backlighting, but it's much more subtle than the Xbox One's glow effect. (maybe it's adjustable ? I seem to think it was, but I can't remember how). Oh, and they added a remote locator which plays a faint beep from the remote until you find/touch the buttons.

If it's lost, or the batteries die, in a pinch, you can use a BT controller or "Android TV" phone app to remote into the shield, or the various Kodi or Plex apps, sic. Same as the 2017.

I also believe you can buy the 2019 remote for the 2017 model from the nvidia website in the US for $29 USD, so it should be on eBay eventually…
https://www.nvidia.com/en-au/shield/shop/ preferably for less than $80

          YMMV.

Comparing it to the 2019 toblerone, or the touchpad 'mouse' on the Apple TV's 4k/5th gen remote, or the Roku/ Telstra TV, or the Xbox One remote, etc. They just have very different ideas and execution. I like each for different reasons, maybe not the Apple TV 4k. IDK.

The only thing I dislike about the 2019 toblerone remote is that the battery area is supremely hard to open, and it's not the worst thing. It doesn't really 'fit' anywhere, but it also doesn't slide around as much as the 2017 shield remote, due to the size.

I do like the 2017's central ring, it's easy to know which end, is which in the dark, and there's no confusion about back/select, and you'll rarely hit the mic/Google Assistant by accident. The downside is that the volume slider can be unforgiving or recalcitrant, moving 1-10 volume notches at a time with acceleration, or in some cases when it hits that sweet spot by accident, moving from 12 to 100% volume, which on an Atmos setup where 30 is cinematic, 100 is painful.

It's more tactile than the ATV4k's gesture-based touchpad, which feels a bit slow to respond, and sometimes you're swiping the bottom of the remote, instead of the touchpad as it's upside down, yet again. or you hit Siri instead of the main button because you've just grasped it to hit pause, or to go back a screen.

but… the 2017 shield remote has also …

fallen between couch cushions, even when not on the couch. It just slides off and finds a new home.
nearly lost it in the paper recycling bin once, as someone zealously picked it up with a stack of leaflets/ads.
slid off the couch and onto the floor, more than a few times too.
Not found it for a period of 2 weeks, ending up between the wall and a shelf as it had slid off.

Certainly, it needed an upgrade. I believe the 2019 remote also has a locator sound if it gets lost, which the 2017 needed. you can also 'ask' android to locate the remote if you have alexa set up.

    • +1

What was wrong was the 2017 remote?
      It works fine for me.

      • Sometimes slow to respond and it burns through batteries!

  • Do the 2019 shields also come with a new game controller (not in OPs deal obviously, but at all?).

    • Nope

    • +1

The 2017 controller works, but it's a bit expensive.

You can also use 3rd party Bluetooth controllers like the Bluetooth xbox one S and X versions (check the box logos) and the PS4 controller(s).

      • and the PS4 controller(s).

That isn't a 100% compatible but ok for an android game or NES emulator or the like.

I have the 2017 controller when they were selling that combo at Kogan for $220-240 a year or two ago now. Was hoping maybe they might have updated it as it good, but not PS4 controller comfortable.

With the sate of the Australian dollar at the moment, local stock electronics will undoubtedly be the cheapest option.

AUD running around 55 to 56 wholesale today. Under 53 retail. Less another 2.5 to 3% conversion where applicable.

    Basically double the USD price.

  • +3

Still waiting for the remote to be available locally, as they don't ship overseas.

    • +1

I don't even think it's ever been in stock or at least for longer than 10 minutes.

      • +1

Yeah it's bad, looks like everyone's after it.

        • Seeing eBay scalpers sell it at twice the price, (plus bad US exchange rate) hoping it becomes available here soon at a reasonable price.

          • @Haxxa: Yeah that remote is needs to come out in Aus asap. The old one is so small I loose it all the time

  • Are there apps available to watch Hong Kong TV? Is it just a matter of finding the applicable apps in an app store and installing or is it more complicated?

    • +1

If you have the IPTV listings / reseller / playlists and whatnot, you can use the IPTV built into most Smart TV's.

If it doesn't use IPTV m3u files, then you might need to see if the site supports:
iOS (Apple TV), Android (nvidia, sony) or WebOS (LG), Tizen (Samsung) or others.

IPTV apps are generally pretty easy to set up once and will pull down the channels as if it were a local station in some cases.

  • Does this do frame rate matching by default?
Would it be able to play 100hz+ content?
Would you go for this over an Openelec/Coreelec box?

    • +1

Kodi can choose frame/mode switching for 24p/23.976fps or 25/30 modes, There's also SPMC which has better defaults as a build of Kodi for the shield.

You can quickly set this on Android 9, in the main remote control menus as a 'default' right from the menu button, but it is app-dependent as well, Netflix/Disney+/Prime has to support the option to send the modes out, but it will often respect Android's settings, so it will work. It can get confused if the TV isn't able to switch back and forth from 24 to 25 to 30 fps in 1080p/4k modes.

The AI upsampler might/can also stop working if you switch the framerate modes around, YMMV.

  • -1

This feels very over priced for what it is. IMO should be around $100-150, and the Pro being $250.

    • The shield has the CPU (or a close cousin) from the Nintendo Switch inside, so, that has some burdensome cost.

Like the Apple TV, it's not just a Media chip, it has 1080p game support (Which is held back by Android …) But, it's also powerful enough to be the brains behind the 4k 65" (now old) BFGD TV's and those have GSYNC with 120hz 1080p games and 4k 60hz games… although, YMMV drastically.

It is now an old GPU/SoC, but it was capable of watching 4k UHD movies before there were 4k UHD movies in 2015. In some ways, it's also a bit more powerful than the A10X chipset in the Apple TV 4k, they are very similar now in terms of functionality and app support.

Both can load/play games, but the Shield Pro is expandable with HDD's,

the Shield Tube/base model can support MicroSDXC. It's designed to sit behind the TV, so it's minimal, or can be taken travelling, etc with a 400gb MicroSDXC of music, movies, TV series easily, etc. Or If you get the Pro, you can take a USB 3.0 4tb portable HDD with 4k Movies along instead.

The 2019 "tube" version could be cheaper, but the poor USD Exchange rate is in the way of it being under $200 AUD. It may also drop in the Christmas/black friday sales if you can hold off that long, or they drop the older model's prices.

It might be possible to get it for the same price as the Apple TV 4K, since they're similar in spec/features/apps (give or take the obvious Apple/Android ecosystem problems). Wait and see.

  • I think 170 is a good price for this but with our crappy dollar, it won't happen.. ever
