            • @AlienC: I think you aren't understanding. Video games have not been shown to cause violence. Meat, paint fumes, sex, smoking, alcohol and UV light all have cancer links so your strange analogy is falling short..

        • -1

So what you're saying is, until you prove that alternative meats doesn't cause cancer I'll keep eating processed and red meat that IS proven to cause cancer. Want to eat food that doesn't cause cancer and actually reduces all cancer risk? Try whole plant foods.

          • +1

@realrift: No, what I'm saying is that despite red meat causing cancer, so do a lot of other aspects of our modern life. If you're lobbying actively against something that has a lower chance of causing cancer than things such as sun exposure, smoking and drinking (at least as far as recent studies show), you should be giving equal attention to these things.

Unless of course, you don't care about cancer rates at all and are just using the meat statistics as a catalyst to further push your personal agendas of vegetarianism/veganism. I tend to believe it's the latter.

Hardly uprising, its like people having mushroom allergies…. But good for people to be wary of….

    • +3

bought and tried this twice. can confirm, diarrhea for days. your mileage may vary.

      • +1

thats what the supplier said had happened to some of their staff when they tested it - I guess some people just dont get on with this stuff

      • +1

I don't know if your joking kees, but I spat hot coffee reading your comment.

      • +1

So what you're saying is it is good for weight loss?

    • +1

I'm confused about the meaning of your post. Why is this even a warning? You won't know you're allergic to something until you try it.

That's like never eating peanuts before, then having peanut butter for the first time and having a reaction then posting here "Warning peanuts can cause previously unknown food allergy reactions."

  • +1

is this a good alternate to tuna for the purpose of bulking?

    • It's not mock tuna. You can buy fake tuna but this is fake beef mince, as you can probably tell from the apperence.
So you're really asking if beef mince can be used as a substitute for fish.

    • +1

Just eat Macca's if you're trying to bulk…

    • It is for the tuna, Aha ha ha ha ha.

  • Again the deal was edited so people's jokes in the comments don't make sense.

    • +1

      What did it say originally.

Props to OP for the swap prank I do enjoy a good swap prank.

  • +3

PSA! Quorn mince isn't vegan friendly.
Also much prefer dried vegetable protein for mince (Coles Wellness Road brand).

    • +4

Are there any aspects of your personality not associated with veganism 🤔🤔🤔

      • +1

        I like bargains ☺
And maybe lots of other things about me that I could share, but I don't really want to be friends with you.

        • Do you block everyone out of your life that doesnt follow your world view 100%? Seems very lonely.

          • @Faro: Not unless they are open-minded and logical people. I apply the same filter to racist and homophobic people. Don't need them in my life.

            • +1

@nagev5: Did you just imply you block out open-minded and logical people?

    • dried vegetable protein has no flavour of its own though.
Quorn tastes much better than any vegan vegetable-based fake-meat.

People forget it is not just plants and animals - there is a third kingdom of eukaryotes.

  • -4

This tastes nothing like beef mince. It is FERALaf.

    • Finally a rational comment! I have the exact same issues with vegetables!

    • +1

      It's falafel?

    • what is a feralaf?

  • +3

I was very excited to see all this meat free meat popping everywhere.
I tried a few of them…all digusting! The worst was the fake meat sausages. Its going to be while before I test the waters again, end of the world or not.

    • Have you tried quorn? It is better. And if you find it "disgusting", rather than just bland or unappetising, I think you have a psychological issue.
A bit like the vegans :-)

Meat is good, but we eat too much and should be open to alternatives.

      • +2

Not bland, just disgusting. I've yet to find a buy and cook at home one that is acceptable.
The Premium fake burger at Lord of the Fries is gross. That said the whopper at Hungry Jacks is pretty good and I've yet to try Quorn but the comments here seem 50/50 so I dunno.

But yes i'm very open to trying alternatives. Basically my feelings about eating meat is summed up by the Simpsons pet lobster episode at the end when Homer eats Pinchie lol

        • +1

Quorn is one of my favourites, as well as The Vegan Factor stuff you can get in the fridge sectors at Woolies.

        • +1

If my wife has cooked dinner i have at times not even noticed she has used the quorn mince instead of beef. Especially somehting like pasta sauce or burrito/taco meat.

The quorn diced chicken is excellent as well. (NQR has 1kg bags for around $7) used that in several dishes and you couldn't pick it at all.

    • Moving Mountains sausages are fantastic, partner and I love them. Have been snapping them up whenever I see them on clearance lately 🤫

  • -1

The word Quorn is enough to give me the heebie-jeebies. Feels like you're gonna grow horns after eating them. 😬

  • All Quorn stuff was out of stock in my local Woolies.

    • You live in Nimbin? Where?

  • Any special on paper-free toilet rolls?

    • +3

yes, it’s called glad wrap …plenty on shelves.

      • actually it's called cling wrap.

  • I misread that 3rd word.. got all excited for a minute.. :(

  • +1

PSA - Check allergen advice on the packaging. I am one of the unlucky few that had explosive bowel movements after consuming.

  • +1

As far as "meat free meat" goes this is probably one of the better ones. Sadly its not quiiiite there taste wise. Almost though.

  • Shattered that I was allergic to Quorn, made my airways close up.

Mind you I still tried it twice. Love a bargain.

  • Vegans, I'm trying to be one of you but I'm an ozbargainer too so please tell me what's the cheapest meat substitute you can get? This is $10.3/kg but even chicken breast is $9.5/kg

    • +2

What part of meat are you trying to substitute? I'm not vegan or vegetarian and I rate quorn mince as the best "meat substitute" by far. Great texture & macros. For pure protein comparisons it's probably any sort of bulk legume.

Chickpeas are $1.88/kg and are up there in protein.

      • The taste mostly so chickpeas won't do. Just want it to replicate meat as much as possible. Texture and protein would be a bonus

        • +2

Well, to be frank Quorn Mince is the best mince substitute. When cooked in say a bolognese it could pass for meat in a blind test.

Some seitans I have had overseas have fooled me into being meat but have never managed to cook it successfully here!

I don't think there's anything that will be a winner every time, at least until lab grown meat shows up.

          • @cruiseronroad: Well that may be the best, I'll definitely try it thanks for recommending! but I'm more concerned about value since these don't cost them anywhere near as meat to produce. So do you know anything cheaper even if it is not the 'best'?

            • @sub102: I personally don't look at manufacturing cost for value so we won't have the same comparisons.

I am hoping it's made in Aus now but I was under the impression it was made in the UK and shipped here, that wouldn't be cheap! There's some value right there!

Textured vegetable protein (TVP). Technically it's $15/kg but hear me out. A $6 bag from Coles has 4 cups worth of TVP in it. Here's my recipe to make mince:

1 Cup TVP (~100g), soaked in boiling water + beef stock powder. Chop onions, garlic. Sautee and add spices (however you spice mince normally - I use paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, parsley, black pepper, oregano). Squeeze some of the water out of the TVP and add to pan. Add diced tomatoes or tomato paste or passata.

You will get ~2-3 servings of mince. I add it to pasta, use it as the filling for mince pies (I mix it with gravy before putting it in puff pastry), or just with rice when I'm lazy.

So it's about $1.5 per 3 servings of mince, or 50 cents per meal. Approximately 22g of protein per serve.

Importantly, to me at least, it tastes good.

      • Have you got a video of you making it? Seems like a good recipe.

        • I don't sorry. But there are tonnes of recipes for TVP online and on Youtube

    • Tofu in various firmness are my go to.

    • Aldi has veg snags, they are pretty good too.
I also recommend you to watch a documentary called Dominion (on YouTube). That will help you to understand why people go vegan. Peace ✌️

I bought their vegan gourmet burgers a few months ago. Fortunately it was half price then.
After struggling to eat half a burger, I couldn't eat any more and threw out 1.5 burgers. It was the most disgusting thing I've eaten for ages.

    • The Quorn burgers are gross. Sorry it put you off the brand because their beer battered fish and chicken schnitzel are delicious.

      • +2

I had the Quorn cheese and spinach schnitzel last night, and half way through dinner I needed to check the package to make sure there wasn't any chicken in the ingredients. I could have sworn it was real chicken.

        • Yeah the chicken is surprisingly good. The diced chicken is super easy for things like stir fry and you wouldn't pick it wasn't chicken. None of the kids did.

      • Thanks for the review. I might give these a try.

        • The chicken nuggets are also uncanny

Pro tip* instead of eating this junk, go to your butcher and ask him to mince a relatively cheap roast cut. That way at least you know what's in your mince

  • Does anybody know whether the Woolworths limits affect this? I'm planning to buy like 5 to count towards the $50 needed for the rewards offer
