Asus N53SV-SX581V for $998 @ Harvey Norman

50

Yesterday I saw an ad on TV. This one is $998 though the website still shows $1696. I am thinking of buying this as my laptop is more than 6 yrs old Dell with Windows XP. There are two other laptops on sale, they show all in a flash so couldn't note the price of the other two but they were i3 and i5 and highly discounted as well.
What is everyone's view on this one.

    • Thanks, forgot to include this. I will update the post.

  • here's a review that might help
if it is $998 then it looks like a good buy for a well spec-ed machine.

i'd jump on it but personally i think its a bit too heavy (2.7kg). i would want something a bit more lightweight for portability…

  • +1

Graphics card is the GT540M (not clearly specified on the HN site):

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-540M.41715.0.…

Fairly decent. But I would say during HN's HP 40% off about a month back, you could get the same sepcs for around $750. But of course some would prefer Asus' product quality.

  • I got this one or a very very similar one about 3 months ago for $999 from harvey norman 40% off sale.
The specs are quite good but i really hated the touchpad.
from memory the boot up time was 2 minutes so i installed a 'copy' of windows 7 and brought boot time down to 1 min due to the slow hard drives laptops usually get
anyway asus is one of the most reliable laptops around
just remember if you are watching blurays at home (this model is bluray burner) then connect the laptop
to a hdtv via hdmi and if possible use optical audio

actually i am really glad i sold it to a friend

    • Is it ELAN touchpad with light effects? I hate it too. I wonder is it possible to replace touchpad somehow?

  • I thought all the Asus laptops have 2yrs Global warranty but the website says only 1yr. Which one is a better laptop this one or http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256979090260/toshiba…

    • toshiba is better but NO WAY $600 better
wait for a good special and keep checking Notebook Hunter and here of course
      http://apcmag.com/notebookhunter/index.htm

      • Thanks for the tip. In what sense do you mean Toshiba is better- reliability, speed or something else.
And what about the FHD screen, is it really better than the HD? I have never seen it so can't compare.

        • +1

toshiba is the most reliable laptop according to major testing. asus is very good as well.
toshiba is usually good build quality. full hd screen is very good as you can fit so much more on the screen. go into a store and compare a 1366x768 screen with a 1900 x 1080 and see for yourself

    • I believe that if you purchased your notebook overseas you get the 2 years global warranty but in OZ it is only one year, I got mine (not this model) from Malaysia at the start of the year and saved myself about $600. It came with the 2 year global warranty.

  • watch out for bully salesman @ harvey they will sell you insurance for laptops which i think is really a rip-off

  • Not a bad price. But I can't wait for the laptops with a 1920x1080 resolution to come down on sale.
