worth noting that USA uses 110 Volts unless the device is switching voltage it will go boom…

IE dont plug in US devices in australia if your unsure… also this plug is not grounded…

erm who negged me without giving a counter argument?

    • +2

      thanks for the heads up!

      • +1

True. Computers, shavers, camera chargers, and phone charger will most likely be auto switchable. Always read the plug. Good deal, can never have enough of these with all of the good Amazon deals posted here.

        Hey guys:

Thank you very much for your information.

Following is a review from one of our Austrilia customer, order if you like and in need~

        Pros:
This adapter fits Australian sockets just fine, although the design isn't one you'd see in an Australian store. It's cheap and cheerful and gets the job done.
        Cons:
The shape makes it a bit awkward to use - the prongs don't sit in the socket particularly tightly and the adapter doesn't hold on to the US plugs I tried it with particularly strongly so it can disconnect rather easily, sometimes even just with the weight of the plug.

It obviously doesn't have an earth connection, although that's not an issue for two prong plugs.
        Overall:
You'll probably want to go for the slightly more expensive three prong types simply because they are a bit sturdier.

        Thanks~

        Lily

    • japan is also 110 volts.
      I made the mistake with a G4 mac :(

      • You sure!? G5 were the problematic models
        http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:4Yxg1uw…
You should have been able to to manually switch the voltage

        • You should have been able to to manually switch the voltage.

I should have manually switched the voltage. I was reminded to switch the voltage by the internal voltage warning mechanism , i.e. smoke and bang!

    • Always check the voltages your device supports and if it is auto or manual switching. These are illegal to import. The pins are too exposed. I've briefly zapped myself with one before. Be careful using them.

You won't find better than 1c, although when in a previous job I had in a store we had many better, 3pin, insulated, legal ones. We used different cords on the appliances they came with, so I was giving them away for free.

  • how do I know if the website is trustable?

  • +2

these are just simple straight pin 2 pin adaptors the 110/240v issue doesn't apply here, i've been using this kind for years, apart from a bit of corrosion they are ok

    • -8

I cant neg you enough… think you need to do a bit of research before you tell people that… you know how usafe that advice is!?

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_power_plugs_and_sockets

many devices are auto switching (take both 110 and 240 volts) however when they dont, doubling the voltage of the device WILL be an issue!

you probably use european 240V devices!

      • +2

The point that morpheu is making is that that is irrelevant to whether or not the pin adapter is a bargain. The pin adapter makes no different to whether or not the device is 110v or 240v. If you're going to buy a device here, sure, pay attention to whether it is auto switching, but again, that's irrelevant here.

        • -1

sounds like what he is saying is - because its only a two prong adaptor, 110 devices will work fine- at lest thats how it reads.

    • +2

I think morpheu is saying the 110/240 issue does not apply to the adapter, but the transformer/PSU itself.

I might be wrong but do the pins have anything to do with voltages? I was under the impression it was what you plug into the socket that matters.

      EDIT: Beaten

      • +1

yep thats true, but people should be aware before plugging us devices into this plug that they need to be auto switching/dual voltage. if the plug is designed to allow you to fit 110 volt devices in it, then thats the point!

  • +13

    Just a word of warning
These plugs are illegal to use in australia as they are not partly insulated on the active and nuetral pins and dont conform to au standards. The insulation standards was designed to stop small children getting zaped when trying to pull the plug out of the wall whilst turned on and their fingers touching the active part of the pin.

    • +6

Sure it isn't just illegal to supply new non-conforming products in Aus?

Plenty of older appliances/cords in use that lack insulated pins.

    • +3

It took 75 years for insulated pins to become a standard. Makes you wonder how many deaths were actually caused by uninsulated pins as opposed to real accidents or stupidity. 75 years is a very long time.

      • +1

        I don't know, 75 years covered WW2….

        • +3

People stopped using electricity during WW2?

    • +6

"Since 3 April 2005 insulated live pins have been mandatory for all plugs (and appliances with integral pins). Approval Certificates for items having non-insulated pins were cancelled on that date. In the interests of enhanced electrical safety and to ensure rapid dispersion into the marketplace, each Australian State and Territory and New Zealand Electrical Regulator required that all electrical equipment was supplied with insulated pin plugs, at all points of sale, by 3 April 2005."

These are for the Chinese market where insulated pins are not required. They are illegal to use here as they don't have an Approval Certificate, but the chances of being caught are slim to none.

    • +1

This is however a bargain for households who don't have kids and not planning on having kids nor intending to invite kids to their homes…

but seriously, if you've been looking around rental places like granny flats, you'd be shocked (literally) at how adhoc the wiring is done..

    • +1

Thanks for the information. I like knowing bits and pieces like this :)

    • Agreed - this item is totally illegal. Even if it had insulated pins, without the mandatory approval number it would be illegal anyway.

I don't understand why people use these adapters, when you can buy an approved, safe, genuine Australian Plug at the local hardware or electrical shop for a dollar or two.

      • +8

$1 is a 100 times the price. Are you crazy?

      • I wonder if there isn't a double-standard here with respect to concerns about electrical compliance. Take the Philips shaver deal from Amazon.com from a few weeks ago. Electric razors are declared articles in NSW, and for these:

Overseas Certificates of Approval and approval marks, such as the CE mark, are not acceptable in Australia.

My grey-import Panasonic shaver bears none of the approved marks, while my Myer-purchased Braun has the RCM mark. The question is - is it illegal for an individual to purchase or bring from overseas, for personal use, electrical goods which have not received local approval.

        • is it illegal for an individual to purchase or bring from overseas, for personal use, electrical goods which have not received local approval.

          "Bring"? No.
          Import, yes.

        • +2

Dunno why this post got singled out.

Every deal that involves importing electronics from overseas could be illegal. e.g. the recent Asus Transformer from Amazon deal would be "illegal" as the charger would not be approved. Same with the first HP TouchPad deal from bestbuy.com. There was also a Philips shaver deal from Amazon which would be just as illegal on the same grounds.

and llama - where do you buy approved plug converters for $1-2?

  • Thanks Budget Gadgets!

  • +1

Thanks, This will be helpful for when I import Japanese products ^_^ "Yes, these do work for some part of Asia, well from the look of the picture anyways"

  • good deal. Safety is one of the issue without the earthing. But I never had any problem with the similar ones I have. Safety switch at home would come in to play once there is a concern on getting zapped!!
Or maybe will just have to use these things at places kids are not able to reach. Othewise I guess it's time to upgrade to a better/newer appliance so the electrons dont leak.

    • You would obviously only use this on a double insulated appliance that doesn't need an earth (ie the US plug was only 2 pin and not 3 pin).

  • Typically you're plugging weighty little power bricks into these things, and slimline two-prong adaptors like these don't sit against the socket as securely and can be a bit of a problem when the power point's internals are a bit 'loose' and don't grab the pins tightly to hold everything in place.

  • +1

Like morpheu, I have also bought eletcrical items from overseas which come supplied with this adaptor. I have been using them ages with no prob. It is merely a 2pin adapter, I wouldn't call it a "travel charger plug adapter".

  • only allows u to buy 1. coupon code takes away -0.87 dollars. Making it 0.01 dollar.
Not bad…~~~could do with one sitting around whenever i need it.

  • Damn, I could have saved myself 99% off price i bought this for $1 OMG LOL

  • Coupon still works
    just bought it

  • +1

I have used many dodgy plugs, a lot worse than the looks of this one, with no problems at all. Just be careful when plugging in/plugging out and you will be fine. Just plain common sense people!

  • Still good. Hmm, used PayPal but just now wondering if CBA will still charge me a $7 conversion fee on my USD$0.01. That would defeat the purpose.

    • +2

nah, it's all good - Paypal do the conversion and charge your account the converted amount

      • +2

Sweet, thanks GH. I'm going to '+' you but only if you '-' me for being so lazy and not looking that up myself :)

  • Damit! i'm still waiting for my 'activiation email'… aarrgh! :)

As for the plugs, I grabbed a few of these from Vietnam (50c each - damn I got ripped), they work a treat.

  • not working?

  • For those who want one but missed out, I would suggest you give eBay a try.
I have previously bought a few of these for 1~6 cents delivered. Takes around 3 weeks to arrive.

  • If you're paying 1 cent by PayPal, won't that all get taken by PayPal as a fee (and the vendor doesn't actually get anything)?
