  • Very hard to beat at this price

    • +1

This is a very close contender
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/509848

Similar ports, but also has TB3. Better processor, better integrated graphics card, lighter at 1kg and somehow still has a larger battery.

Downside is it's 256gb ssd as opposed to 512gb ssd. It was a steal at $1000, but even at the current price of $1200 it would certainly be on my shortlist if I were looking for a laptop right now

      • I think the asus looks better, specs aside

      • the asus doesn't have tb3

  • very light weight machine. Love it..

  • i7 version is $1999, at $200 cashback beats JB-Hi-Fi 20% two weeks ago at $1859. i7 model benefits in the sense it has 16gb model

  • -3

    Only 8gb ram is disappointing.

    • Depends what you want to use it for.

    • 16GB of RAM for these types of laptops are extremely niche. Like someone who uses it maybe for VM work? But then again why would you buy a laptop like this for VM work… You'd get something that has expansion options for storage and RAM. And not a "U" variant CPU but a "H" variant.

        Chrome will eat 8gb easily

        • +1

Yes it will and that's where the SSD comes into play for paging memory which results in the laptop still being responsive even though Chrome is eating all the RAM.

          • +1

@dfg555: Yeah the chrome memory meme is kind of irrelevant these days unless you’re using 20+ tabs.

8gb would be fine for most users.

            • +1

@Bedgrub: A lot of "web apps" are very memory hungry, even if I have 10 tabs open when you open the in-browser task manager you can see that Gmail is using a ton of ram and Facebook per-tab is huge memory usage and when you're on a couple of Facebook groups in tabs your ram is gobbled up fast.

8gb is still probably no problem for most people though I agree.

            • @Bedgrub:

              unless you’re using 20+ tabs

That's my standard view most days. 5 out of 23 of my current tabs are OzBargain related.

        • +1

Agreed, Firefox as well. I actually have this laptop (FN variant) and while it is great, there is always noticeable slowdown during prolonged browsing sessions. Kind of regret not going for 16gb.

          • @wangasm: Is there no ram slot to add an extra stick?

            • @Agret: No, the RAM is soldered to the board. And I assume this model is the same.

    • Not sure why you are getting negged. 8gb is a joke for a $1000+ laptop, even tablets come with more ram these days.

      • -2

        Exactly!
And someone here kept lessoning op with the bs of vm! So people who doesn’t use vm or wants a U variant cpu instead of the H variant should not have an ultra book with 16gb ram?! Probably the same bunch of dicks who, not long ago, claimed 4gb would be enough “as long as you don’t use vm” or “otherwise you need a different machine”

        • +2

You seem pretty upset about my comment. Not to mention my comment wasn't towards OP but the "use case" of this laptop. I'm not going to argue with you about it but if you don't like my comment then you can always downvote it or report it.

You've been a member for a while. You haven't picked up that OzBargain's collective knowledge, regarding tech, is abysmal?

    • -1

More than enough to be a fast productivity use laptop.

As one poster has already said, if you need 16GB+ RAM then you're likely to be needing a different machine.

    • confirmed cant upgrade the ram?

      • You can't, RAM is soldered on the board.

  • Like the rest of the Zenbook range, these are quite nice, I've used a 13" inch ZenBook myself and that was incredibly well-built and amazingly thin and light.

I'd wager the Zenbooks are a close second to the XPS 13/14 in terms of build quality and finish.

  • is there a zenbook 2 in 1 version in this? thanks

    • Zenbook Flip is similar.

  • -4

My i5 Asus from 5+ years ago came with 16gb, can't believe they are still selling 8gb ones and that people are actually still buying 8gb laptops. Surely people are not spending $1000+ just to get a machine for light web browsing sessions, or are they?

    • +1

I'd think people are buying the likes of this more for the weight and portability, battery life, screen quality, watching movies, use of Office products etc. which 8GB is fine for

      • Then might as well get an iPad for those kind of things. Cheaper, lighter, and more portable.

  • -2

8GB of RAM is a shame. 16GB could have made this a decent mobile editing PC.

  • What's the screen like? Usually one of the first compromises.

    • Looks like it is sharing the same chassis to last year UX433FA. So at about 300 nits that's quite average, no PWM is a good thing though.

  • Has this a Matt or glossy screen ?

  • +1

    The I7 16gb is $1499 plus additional $200 cashback..

  • I am very tempted to buy this and keen to hear owners perspective.. Is price good for these specs?

I am worried about not having fingerprint reader and thunderbolt 3 port.. Are those deal breakers?

Is it ddr4 ram? And does it have face unlock?

Any other drawback of this laptop? Never owned asus before..

    Thank you.

    • With IR camera unlocking using face, why bother with fingerprint reader?

      • Mate, thank you for your reply. :)

How long have you owned this laptop?

Is there any major downside to it?

        What about thunderbolt 3 port?

        Thank you again.

        • Your questions can be answered by looking at the specs page

I can't speak for this specific model but I have the previous gen of this model (UX433FN) and I'm happy with it.
The only small annoyances to me are no USB-C charging and the battery life could be better. I also find the 8GB RAM limiting in some occasions, but that'll be the same with any laptop.

I do not need fingerprint reader and thunderbolt 3 so that's not a problem for me.

  • Literally just bought the Dell
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/522571#comment-8418761

    How does this compare?
    Very similar specs

    • This one has touch screen, the dell doesn't (Default configuration?). But that also means the Asus is slightly heavier (~160g). Can't comment on the screen quality though.
This one still uses a dedicated charger, the Dell has USB-C charging.
This one has no Thunderbolt 3, the Dell does.
The Dell has a slightly bigger battery and very likely a lot better battery life in real world usage than the Asus.
This one is 7mm shorter and 1mm thinner.

I personally think the Dell is slightly better value. But I prefer the design of the Zenbook shrug

      • Thanks for the comparison. Much appreciated!

  • I looked at this, but it attracts fingerprints like crazy and the number pad in the trackpad didn't work as well as I wanted.

  • I liked Zenbook Duo but only Pro Duo has thunderbolt 3.
