Processor Model 1035 G1 means it doesn't come with iris plus graphics. Still with UHD.

  • has Thunderbolt and touch screen, which are not stated in HN's specs

    Source?

    • Just bought one. It has a touch screen, and there's a thunderbolt symbol next to the USB-C port. The salesman also confirmed it.

      • +6

Trusting a HN salesperson is like putting a scorpion in your pants.

        • +6

True. But I also saw some video reviews mentioned it had a touch screen and Thunderbolt.
BTW, it's a matte touch screen. I didn't know it's possible to have a matte touch screen.

          • +2

@moyanous: Definitely possible, just not super common in a laptop. In a car infotainment center for example, it's much more common for matte touchscreens than glossy. Glossy would be reflective and that might be unsafe while you're driving or making it hard to see. My clock in machine at work is also one of these.

          • @moyanous: Same, until my friend brought out his Dell laptop that had a lip and a matte screen. And then he started scrolling and I was surprised. Thought touchscreens were all shiny glass and a smooth surface. What about phones LOL

Yay.. much prefer Amazon over Harvey Norman…

Give your money to a dinosaur, or to the richest man in the world who uses his might to crush start up competitors. Your choice.

        • +2

It's like the Trump/Clinton conundrum (for US citizens) all over again :( At least in this case, you end up with a decent notebook either way.

          • +5

@strangeloops66: Well no not really. I despise Gerry Harvey however his employees get a fair wage, arent pissing in juice bottles because no breaks, arent fainting or being permanently hurt due to work/overwork practices… no one is suiciding because of Gerry… that other guy though…

  • +2

I have the 15 inch version of this. Absolutely love it. So lightweight and quick

  • +1

    Well, that's quite decent value.
Not as good as the i3 10th gen for $488 though.

    • +2

core i3 is dual core, this has 4 cores (physical) + full hd resolution + touch screen + bigger ssd + backlit keyboards etc

      • +3

The i3 is full hd ips and backlit keyboard, ssds are cheap as chips (and it has a drive space for one), and the differences in CPU are minimal in real world usage for all but a few applications.

Touchscreen would be handy at times, but $510 worth of handy? Probably not.

        • +3

          Other differences to compare also:
          - Weight: 990g vs 1.8kg for the i3 aspire
          - Battery: "12hr" vs "7hr" for the i3 aspire
          Both are good deals.

        • Bought i3 version last time. Very happy with the build quality. Accidentally dropped once and found out it is metal body. Battery life is the only downside.

      • The i3 10th gen I thought was quad core?
Last one also had full hd res + backlight keyboard etc

        • You might be mixing up the hyperthreaded cores

          • @Zackeroo: Well what do you know, i3 10th gen is only dual core. At least there's more of a difference between i3 and i5 now.

            • @pennypincher98: The $488 one for my partner was amazing value, and surprisingly snappy.
At the same time I picked up a brand new X1 Yoga Gen 3 for only $275 more than this Swift model with similar specs.

              • @bevo: Tbh I'm more surprised you got a X1 Yoga for that price… The X1 series are usually quite expensive… I got a X1 Carbon and absolutely love it, but it wasn't cheap :)

  • at least it is Ice Lake chip, not the Comet Lake (similar to 8th gen)

Possible price beat at officeworks perhaps?

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/acer-swift…

    $1497 @ OW

    • +1

Thanks - bought one at OW - total was $948.10. Not in stock but delivery for my store was in 2 days.

    • +1

+1 thanks for pointing this out, and to the OP for posting the deal. I just got one for $948.10 as well, after the OW rep verified the barcode and model are the same.

    • +1, got one but mind had a faulty loose trackpad :(

  • +5

Decent deal, though I've promised myself I'm not buying anything else for the remainder of the year.

    • +10

so you're free to buy something in about 5 minutes?

      • About a minute now.

  • +2

Same here. Not buying anymore this year. Done.

  • Offer ends 11:59PM AEDT 6th January 2020

I believed it's still available for anyone that need one for start of the year.

  • Is this laptop better than the new dell inspiron 14 7000 (7490)?

    • The Dell is more premium. The Inspiron line is slowly becoming more and more XPS-like. But so is its price.

    • -3

Dell has the massive advantage of not being Acer.

      • Negs for that? Every Acer I've had has been a pile of crap.

        • +1

Having strong options on things and caring about comment votes on Ozbargain, you can have one or the other, not both.

I've had two Dell lappys die on us (both mine and my wife's).
While mine was treated pretty ruggedly, hers was cotton wool yet both suffered the same fate.
I just don't spend big money on laptops any more, especially since it's a depreciation every couple of years for me anyway.

          • @2024: I don't care about the negs, was genuinely curious as I've had bad experiences, and looking online so have a lot of other people. Maybe it's changed recently, but they were always a budget crapper.

        • +1

I'm still using one I bought back in 2011, still going strong.

  • Sounds nice.

  • Where is the link.of $488 one? I have not purchased anything yet but soon after a good laptop. I have some store credit with H.N so i can't look anywhere else. Max is $1000. Any one pls suggest something best? I missed already deals of boxing day as most of the laptops wer out of stock.
    Thanks

  • How long does the battery last on these?

    • +2

It says 12 hours in specs but I've seen reviewers say around 9 hours with light usage and 6 hours with video playback at half brightness

  • +1

Damn, USB c charging would've made me pull the trigger

    • +1

I have been using this for a month now and can confirm that it charges via USB C which is also Thunderbolt 3 compatible. I hooked it up to a Razer Core X Chroma eGPU and have been playing some graphic intensive games without trouble.

      • Is the charging slower? I was hoping to use one charging cable for my phone as well. I just wanted one charger from my power point where I could use to charge my phone and my laptop instead of a laptop charger and a phone charger.

        • +1

I use my phone charger. Its reasonably fast. I didn't take a precise measure but takes about 2-3 hours to full charge (though I never started from a fully empty state).

          • @Panadol: What phone do you have? I don't think you could charge it whilst using it though? I was thinking of buying a USB charger like from Dell but I think the charging on this laptop on USB C is limited to 5V 3A

      • An expensive EGPU for a cheap laptop, I'm looking to go the other way around soon!

        • +1

A cheap EGPU for an expensive laptop?

          • @2024: Yeah I've already got the laptop, just waiting for a cheap EGPU to exist.

  • +1

Good laptop, M2 upgradable but not the RAM.

    • 8GB RAM will really be the bottleneck of this unit then. Oh well.

      • +1

According to Acer website - "up to 16Gb LPDDR4 RAM"

        https://online.acer.com.au/acer/store/index.php/aspire-swift…

Assume this means that the RAM IS up-gradable?

        • +1

all LPDDR (Low Power) is soldered, this is required to achieve minimum latency and maximum power savings. Up to 16GB is probably just a configuration that you can buy.

          • @JuiceT: Yes I fear that you are correct however there is no 16Gb I5 version that I can find either in Aus or the US so the website indicating "up to 16Gb RAM" is a little misleading. There is however an I7 16Gb RAM model.

  • Good lightweight slim work or everyday laptop. We have the 15in version. You just can't believe how light it is for its size. Makes carrying it around on travels or day to day very easy.

  • Ram upgradable?

    • Looks like it's soldered. Which is a shame.

      • +1

Officeworks lists it as having a 16GB capacity though?

        • +1

They're usually soldered plus a spare slot.

          • @Clear: Acer website confirms "up to 16Gb LPDDR4 RAM"

            https://online.acer.com.au/acer/store/index.php/aspire-swift…

This is a great price for this level of Laptop!

          • +1

@Clear: Someone said above you can't upgrade it, that it means you can buy one with a config of 16gb. Can someone confirm?

            • @[Deactivated]: If they release a model with 16GB then sure. Variants are often region specific.

              • @Clear: I mean I want to know if the ram is upgradable or if we can add more

                • +1

@[Deactivated]: Need to find someone who has one that can share a MB pic.

  • This is a decent laptop. No coil whine or weird chassis defects like the Dell XPS's I have encountered. Only noticeable issue (if you can call it that, I am perhaps anal) is the trackpad that makes a click sound towards the bottom when gently tapped.

    • I don't think your being anal wanting a nice smooth, quiet, precision mouse pad on a $1000 laptop,

I and many others would too ( although these are first world problems lol ).

  • Do you guys know if any more good deals coming soon with H.N? That seems going over budget. Any other in similar specs but lower in price?
    Thanks

  • +7

To anyone looking for a powerful lightweight laptop for day to day tasks… Get this

Originally, when I saw the weight and the 'G' series processor, I thought, "Oh this is probably gonna be an underpowered processor similar to the Y series found on 12" Macs", however this is the complete opposite. SOMEHOW this G series processor is even more powerful than the usual 10th gen i5 (i5-10210U), and is found on this 0.99KG laptop. What a combo!!

The only disadvantages that I really see here is the 8GB RAM (Minimum for optimal performance nowadays) and the 256GB of SSD. It would have been much better if the laptop had 16GB or even 12GB, and if the SSD was a 512GB or even an NVME 256GB… Howeverrr, this is quite a cheap laptop and is really worth the price

    FOR ANY GAMERS
Do not expect the quick CPU performance to provide good gaming experience… This laptop has quite an underpowered graphics system (Integrated) and will provide similar performance to the 3 year old 7th Gen intel processor when it comes to any graphics demanding process

  • does any one know how long this sale lasts?

  • +1

Is anyone able to confirm is the ram is upgradable? Since "up to 16gb" can also mean theres a 16gb soldered ram configuration. Anyone tried upgraing?

    • +4

RAM is not upgradable. SSD is upgradable though. Will upload a few photos of motherboard later.

      • Is it running single channel ?

  • +1

Thanks OP, helped mate with buying one from OW price beat!

  • is the 8GB of RAM dual channel or single channel ? massive difference.

    • +4

      Dual channel, just tested it.

  • Great laptop, picked up the i7 version for around $1350 during black friday, more RAM and storage but pretty much identical. Very little compromises especially compared to the competition at this price point. Believe its also Project Athena approved

  • Getting close to buying this one, agreed that for the price this is a good deal. Think I'll do a price match with OW and save another $50.
Anyone have thoughts on the value of the 'extra cover' protection from OW? https://www.officeworks.com.au/services/extra-cover

    • +1

      Waste of money.

  • +1

Tried to call up OW for Pricebeat but they said they ran out of stock everywhere for this model. Ended up getting it at Harvey Norman instead.

    • They do online shipping. Same goes for Amazon.

      • Was told can't order anywhere from OW because none in warehouse

  • For those who bought the laptop, does your trackpad dip away quite significantly in the bottom corners?

    • +1

There is a slope left to right. i can see/feel almost no gap on the let hand side and about 1mm on the right hand side of the trackpad.
But this seems different to your experience of a dip at the buttons.

      • Thanks for the feedback, I might need to get mine checked out then.

  • How does this compare to the…
"Lenovo Ideapad 14-inch Ryzen 3/8GB/128GB SSD 2 in 1 Device" for $748 from HN?

Need a laptop or 2in1 for my daughter for grade 7 high school in months time.

    Cheers

  • Is this worth the $200 over the HP Pavillion
