And unless you pay for a brand with a premium cooling solution; the 5700 has much better odds of not throttling than a 5700xt.

    Good deal.

    • +1

And if you rrally want to throttle you cna flash the xt bios. Hah

      • +1

As much as the 2070SUPER is less value, $ per frame, im planning to pay it for the peace of mind in cooling.

I have no loyalty to either team, but my house is at minimum 35c in summer; amd just cant seem to get a decent cooling solution on their current gen.

        • +1

same here, my house is hot as shit in summer. my 1080ti strix is still going strong.

        • 35c?! yikes

        • My god 35? Surely air con is the answer here.

        • +1

I'm not sure if you're talking about reference cards or specific brands, but the decent 5700XTs (eg PowerColour or Sapphire) run just as cool as any 2070S.

For example, I bought a Red Devil 5700XT. Benchmarks show a 62deg temp in controlled environment. Mine tops out with the default fan profile at about 76 in summer of ~35deg indoors. Benchmarks I've found show 2070S in controlled environments hitting 70+. Add more than 10 for ambient, and the 2070S is likely warmer.

EDIT: I've since bought an air-con. Best investment ever.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yep.

            We're on ozbargain, not atomicmpc.

Cheapest for cheapest; ref to ref, 2070super blows it out of the water for thermals, and a smidgeon of fps.

Your premium card is well built.

            • +1

@MasterScythe: Yes we're Ozbargain. We're choosy, selective and always look for the best deal for the best gear. We call out deals that don't perform well. If you recall, the 5700XT reference cards were bagged out here, with a fair reason, they don't really suit an Aussie summer.

With that said, if you want to constrain your comparison to only reference models, go right ahead. That doesn't make your generalisation any more true.

I'm still of the opinion that there are 5700XT partner models that will run cooler and provide better dollar for dollar performance. For example, the Gigabyte model runs fairly cool and can occasionally be had for a great price, eg https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/512921 (not that I'd recommend FTC).

That doesn't make your generalisation any more true

Yes it does; otherwise it'd be specific, not general.

There are more reference cards than custom; thats what makes it a generalisation.

                Read my original comment;

You disagree that 'unless you get a good cooler' they run hot?

                Why?

                • @MasterScythe:

There are more reference cards than custom; thats what makes it a generalisation.

You can't really buy reference 5700XT cards from retailers any more. Aside from the odd one here and there, they're gone, replaced by partner models.

Your generalisation was true when reference cards were released, and is false now that they're the minority.

I'm sorry sir, you are biased, and you are making a decision based on history.

This is OzBargain, do as you will, but don't spread misinformation.

                  • @[Deactivated]: In what way am I bias?

Whats wrong with my original comment that premium cooler cards are good and reference is not?

                    Im not understanding.

                    • @MasterScythe: The only statement I've taken issue with is this one:

I have no loyalty to either team, but my house is at minimum 35c in summer; amd just cant seem to get a decent cooling solution on their current gen.

Only really the last part of that sentence.

                      • @[Deactivated]: And I totally stand by that exactly. AMD can't work out a cooling solution.
I know they made a revision, but AMD's reference is STILL bad.

The thing that proves my point most, is that, as you pointed out, most cards are relying on 3rd parties designs\coolers!!!!

I still stand by the fact that AMD are not managing to make a decent cooling system.
Is there another reference update I've missed?
If so link please, I actually like to be proven wrong when there's proof behind it.

Honestly, PLEASE link where AMD designed a good cooler for the 5700 series cards.
I feel like I'm being attacked because people are failing to actually read what I typed.

                        • +1

@MasterScythe: I'm not going to defend the reference card coolers.

However, you are making a statement and decision to reject an entire lineup because of initial reference designs that you can't even buy now.

                          Totally makes sense.

                          • @[Deactivated]: You're not going to defend the reference cards? Then what are you even trying to get me to agree with?

I said the series is GOOD, with a good cooler.

I also said AMD cant design a cooler for shit.

I also claimed nvidia designed a good card (i dont think their ref is nearly as bad!)

And i base those, on the fact that often a reference 2070S is withing $100 of a 'premium' 5700xt; and stock clock, does edge it out in performance ever so slightly (especialy if you encode)

And i even said right away; the amd card is slightly better frames:$$$.

You accuse me of being bias.

Which point do you disagree with most?

because of initial reference designs that you can't even buy now.

And no, im also not fond of reference 1.1 either, its not just the initial one.

And yes, i can still buy ref 1.1 cards.
I wouldnt, but i can, and they're not just 'old stock'; my wholesaler can still order more.

        • My house is also 35C in the summer and I can't game on my RX570 PC. Easily reaches 90C with no overclock. My other PC with a 1660 Super barely goes over 75C.

          • @Yuri Lowell: RX570s do seem to respond well to undervolting at least. Use radeon settings to drop it down to 1000-1050mV at standard speeds, should be stable at take some heat off. Could experiment and go lower if desired.

          • @Yuri Lowell: The 570 and 580, depending on brand, had huge mixes of bad paste, loose coolers, conservative fan curves, too much voltage; you name it.

            Are you a diy nerd?

If so; aftermarket paste (new noctua nth2 is available most places); making sure the cooler is tight; and setting your fan to ramp up sooner with at least a 100mv undervolt, should keep you in the mid 80c.

Doesnt sound like much, but those cards throttle slightly at high 80's, so should get you gaming in summer.

Worked for my client, whos bedroom was 37c at the time of testing.

          • @Yuri Lowell: What model 570 did you buy?

My Sapphire rx580 doesnt even break 70 degrees on 40 degree days next to my open window. My case doesnt even have active air cooling.

            • @IronOrchard: I have 2xHD7970s ghz edition cards and i have no problems.

        • Or to avoid driver issues. I went Nvidea as the super cards are good. Could get more frames per $, diminishing returns are nothing new.

        • You must be sweating balls in the summer.

  • i've currently got a 1080 but want to try hackintosh again. is this a down/up/side-grade to the 1080?

    • +1

      In raw frames; downgrade.

In things like shadow handling; upgrade.

It will depend on what the game relies on more.

      • thanks for your input. no idea why you were downvoted

        • The benchmarks I've seen show that the 5700 gains a lot of ground in fps in newer games vs older ones against 1080s so going forward would be a good option. Raw compute i think the 1080ti or 1080 would reign supreme.

          • @Vaiels: Ive seen charts claiming the same, but i didnt see that in my back to back testing when i upgraded my mates machine.

Though; considering it was done near launch day, it could have been a driver maturity thing.

    • I haven't seen any good side by side benchmarks but it should be an upgrade.

    • Not sure what version of macOS you need but your 1080 will run up to High Sierra, there's Nvidia drivers. No support past that unfortunately.

      • i dont need anything higher but i usually tend towards the latest

        • The plus side is that in mac world; you usually dont need to.

Within "the last 3 majors" is more than enough to still run everything.

          In fact, often its better.

While it was long ago now; when spotlight was added, older machines saw a HUGE performance dump; many stayed with the older OS if they were power users and saw zero value in spotlight.

  • You could easily get $80-100 or so for the two games which brings it down to $400-420 which is pretty darn good for a 5700.

    • Isnt gamepass really cheap?

      • You also get Resident Evil 3 and Monster Hunter Iceborne with the Navi GPUs.

    • $80-$100 seems optimistic, but still a good point that more value can be found here

      • Maybe but RE3 is a brand new title and MH:Iceborne is the complete game which goes on sale for about $50-60 at the moment.

  • Do MSI offer 3 year warranty?

  • PCCG have this card listed with 1 year warranty, Scorptec have it for 3 years warranty and Centrecom dont show the warranty at all

    • They are obligated to take products that are faulty for the livetime of the manufacturers warrenty :)
