  • Looks like a great deal, but I wonder what the downsides are to this device, every device seems to have them.

    • Well its an Astone.
      Check out this review:
      http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/home_entertainment/asto…
It sum it up pretty well… and just keep in mind that the price the reviewer is talking about is $349.95. So if at that price, he thinks its a good choice …
then at $139.98 , its definitely a bargain.

  • Watch out for the PVR function … is it a PROTECTED file format?

I bought a cheap 32" TCL HDTV with usb recording (PVR) and found that I could not play back the files on my PC, only on the TV itself. When I rang their customer support I was told that the files are protected so will only play back on the TV.

    • +2

Standard TS format - plays back on any platform.

This is aan okay deal. Single tuner PVR has been twice superceeded with the Astone ap308/410dt and the far superior mp310dt.

My advice would be to avoid this model and buy a MP310dt and 2Tb HDD for about $200 delivered.

      • choofa, you seem to know a thing or two bout these.

is the OP deal suitable for this task:

record from normal RCA input directly to a USB stick (that will play on pc or mac).

        ?

That's the only task I'd like to do.. having trouble finding something that fits.

(Recording to internal HDD first won't work for my situation.)

        cheers

        • ok.. i saw specs of it.. seems it only has output plugs.

          doh.

if anyone knows a device that fits.. please help me

        • "record from normal RCA input" ??
Are you recording TV? The specs say this has an analogue and digital tuner.

        • hi bargainhunter..

trying to record, say, an old camcorder straight to a usb stick 'on the fly'.

          camcorder has rca(yellow/red/white) output ability.

          analogue tuner eh..
i suppose i could maybe find another device that gets an rca signlal and transmits in via analogue/digital for tuners to pick up. not really ideal though.

        • I have this device, and yes, it can record from an analogue source to an MPEG file using RCA input.

      • cheers onlyme.. good to know. (pcworld specs said rca was only output)

  • These are a good device, use a reasonable recent realtek chipset.

The forum is where you learn the ins and outs… http://www.astone.com.au/forum/index.php

$140 is a good price with a drive. Pull the drive out (say $60 worth?) and you have a fully functional Networked DVR with Media Player and external USB storage for $80.

HOPEFULLY these devices will be updated to the new Realtek firmware that is currently in the pipeline.

  • anyone know where you can get this cheaper without the HDD?

  • with many TVs now having an inbuilt PVR, I tend to think its a bit redundant to get a single tuner PVR, the network media centre is good, though, I wonder how long until TVs have the network media centre built in, pretty sure a few would already, my view is its just a matter of time until cheaper units do… think ill hold out, saving the cash for a TV with a network media centre and PVR function.

The rep from millennius.com.au said they where working on one in the TV thread.
