I believe the difference on the new model is that both ports support 18W USB QC3.0, when using two ports together the Max power is 15W.

when using two ports together the Max power is 15W.

I am going to be cynical about this and interpret this as a cost saving measure. Essentially, when both ports are used, they would fall back to 5V mode (with each more outputing 1.5A max). This type of chipset is used in some of the Powerbanks.

Also, it is best to put a USB meter through each port (or have 2 USB meters to test). I also fear that it might be like the Powerbank where one port is slightly better than the other.

If you only use 1 port, then this model might be better than the previous, but if you use both… I am not so sure… Going to take my old S6 out and run a test with 2 meters.

    • It's priced similar to single port 18w ones

      • I had a quick look at my old BW-S6, it is rated 30W. Right now, I don't have 2 devices with battery level below 50% to fully test. Though, when plugged in to both ports, the old S6 does operate one port in QC3 mode and the other port in 5V mode independently.

If you look at the actual spec printed on the adapter carefully, it does indicate the dual port mode operates in 5V. So, this newer model isn't as good as the old one, unfortunately.

    • I'm not knowledgeable about electrics, however if you mistook that as 15W, I meant to say that it's 15W per port (30W total) when two devices are plugged in, not 15W total.

When you zoom in on the adapter itself, look for its specs on the dual port mode. Also, bear in mind the max power on this adapter is 18W so on the maths side, it is not possible for each port to operate in 15W mode (that would require 30W).

Besides, for USB-A ports, 2.4A is technically the max according to spec. Each port 3A is possible, but would be out of spec.

The issue isn't the 5V current when operating in dual port mode. The main issue is that QC support is unavailable in dual port mode so if you have any phone that needs QC2/3, in dual port mode, you will be stuck with slow charging. I have another charging device which operates like that.

  • Not as cheap as it used to be. I think the first one I bought was $6 USD. But I need another so…

  • Code expired. Spent too long dicking around trying to add a usb meter :(

    • Didn't think it'd go that quick.. Can also use BG6sbw89 to get it for $9.89 USD also

      • Not your fault, it's the OzBargain way!
Just managed to grab one with that second code, thank you.
