  • Fantastic TV, fantastic price.

Have the 55C9 and 65B9, love them both.

    • +11

      Can I move in? #envious

    • What's the difference between the C9 or B9?
And have those differences been an issue to you IRL?

      • +7

B9 is a little slower to navigate the menu's and applications - otherwise picture quality looks the same. Running a mix of 4K Bluray, Netflix (various quality) and Youtube. The C9 is used more for games.

Not much real world difference to be honest with you. C9 is maybe a tiny bit brighter.

I've had a C7, C9 and now B9 and it's very hard to tell the difference, they're all fantastic really. If you're upgrading from an old Plasma, LCD or LED/LCD TV you'll be very happy.

      • -4

What's the difference between the C9 or B9?

        B9 60Hz, C9 120Hz
        C9 has black frame insertion
C9 has or will have G-sync support

C9 may have HDMI 2.1, look it up

This guy, Vincent Teoh, is a professional tv calibrator and he provides a very good in depth analysis of the differences. There are picture quality differences between the C9 and B9, however it might or might not matter depending on the individual and how much you really care about these things.

  • +1

Worth it? Knowing new tvs coming out in couple months.

    • I would say so at this price. Brand new TVs typically cost almost twice as much when they first come out and are maybe only 5-10% better.

Not worth the price difference imo.

    • +1

AI upscaling, 4k 120Hz support via HDMI 2.0a (not great, but better than what's existing), 120Hz BFI, AV1 decoding support.

Unless you're the kind of person who sells their TV every 2 years, wait until October-December.

      • Thanks for your comment.
Unlike phones, we usually keep TVs in our house forever or until they break down.
Even if an amazing new deal comes out, the previous TV will usually move to a secondary location in the house.

      • Yeah I agree, 2019 to 2020 is going to be a bigger jump than your typical yearly refresh.

      • Having played around with AV1 encoding, I'm fairly confident it will be a decade or so before AV1 decoding is going to be something anyone is missing. It's only the biggest titles from the biggest streaming services that will even think about encoding their stuff in AV1 for quite a while, and even then they'll likely still be doing HEVC/VP9 for a decade or more, and 4K HDR is already looking amazing at current bandwidth levels available on the NBN. Encoding your own stuff in AV1 is ridiculous levels of slow as there's no hardware encoder support yet so even that will probably be a minimum of a few years away as even first gen encoding hardware will probably be way more electricity to run than it's worth.

Not sure how good LG's AI upscaling will be, but their current upscaling isn't bad. Some of the slower PC based upscaling 'can' be amazing but a long way from real-time yet :\

        • -1

YouTube and Netflix already do AV1 encoding.

We're already seeing AI upres in video games, it's just a case of what the neural processor (or related hardware) is like in the LG, and how complex and diverse their AI upres is as a result.

They can also update the models being used and deployed over time by virtue of dropping software and firmware updates on the device (but I don't know how much storage space these things have).

          • @jasswolf: Yeah, I know they do AV1 but it's more to save them bandwidth on that scale, it's not something worth doing even for them for minor titles. And as an end customer the bandwidth savings aren't that great anyway and the HEVC stuff is great quality as is. It's a non-issue really, you don't lose anything by not having it because all the AV1 content is available in HEVC or VP9 in as good quality for marginally more bandwidth.

There's AI upres in the NVidia Shield as well, and probably will be kept up to date better than in the LG, LG aren't great at backporting functionality when it's a differentiator on the next model. For that sort of feature I wouldn't care so much about waiting for the right TV when it will be something that can be added on later externally and likely better as well. It will be a question of what sort of processing power they can throw at it rather than just the models, the models are already pretty good.

            • -1

@[Deactivated]: This is one of the easier things to backport and scale, especially if you plan on having both 4K and 8K televisions in your lineup for some time.

AI upscaling in the Shield reflects how over-the-top the GPU is in that unit, but is still not reflective of this televisions' capabilities, given the likely 6:1 advantage of creating specific ASIC-like circuitry for the purpose. What you're also glossing over is that Shield doesn't even do HDR via VP9, let alone AV1.

AV1 will be critical for streaming 4k HDR video at 60 and 120 FPS, something we'll start to see more of, particularly for sporting broadcasts. Using an extra 25-40% bandwidth for that purpose is not something to be thrilled about.

              • -1

@jasswolf: It's not really about easy, they just don't want to do it, hence the lack of HDR10+ still. 120Hz BFI was in pre-production units of the C9 but disabled before release so they could market the CX with it this year.

It's not really about the shield, it's about what's required to bring the function in the future. The functionality (AV1 / AI Upscale etc) is able to be added via another device, even in 10 years time. It's definitely not 'unless you change your tv every 2 years' material. Most people will be completely happy with this for a decade or more.

I'm not alone in thinking that 60 and 120 FPS look measurably worse for movies and even a 6:1 speedup for dedicated hardware would still leave you watching your sports event days after it was played if encoding to AV1. I don't think you get how incredibly inefficient AV1 is at encoding. We're talking days to encode a couple of minutes of video currently. In any case the players looking at AV1 (Netflix et all) are not big sports streamers, and those that are (eg Foxtel) would likely provide their own hardware, be able to easily spare the bandwidth due to broadcast ability on the last mile, and probably not send out any sports in 120 FPS or 8k for a decade anyway.

Even the upscaler in the C9 makes 1080p high bit-rate look hard enough to distinguish from 4k unless you have them side by side and get uncomfortably close anyway. It looks terrific, I'd be surprised if anyone but the keenest of observers notice any difference in the CX at all.

If COVID-19 is still hanging around towards the middle of the year it might really reduce supply.

                • -1

                  @[Deactivated]:

It's not really about easy, they just don't want to do it, hence the lack of HDR10+ still.

                  It's a good reason why they don't.

They regard it as unnecessary given their real time dynamic tone mapping tech, and instead wish to continue to offer support that pushes Dolby Vision forward as the ultimate standard for non-terrestrial video.

120Hz BFI was in pre-production units of the C9 but disabled before release so they could market the CX with it this year.

No, it was due to how they had to use their hardware to solve a blocking and flashing issue with near blacks that was picked up on the C8 after the C9 went into production, and that got carried over.

This issue impacted how BFI could be implemented and hurt other models that had 120Hz BFI planned as well.

I'm not alone in thinking that 60 and 120 FPS look measurably worse for movies

That's a matter of preference, and irrelevant for live broadcasting and other non-cinematic content, where realism is valued.

even a 6:1 speedup for dedicated hardware would still leave you watching your sports event days after it was played if encoding to AV1.

That is the typical gains you see from ASIC componentry and was in reference how to deliver a better up-res model than what NVIDIA has been doing on the Shield.

Absolutely nothing to do with AV1's speed.

I don't think you get how incredibly inefficient AV1 is at encoding. We're talking days to encode a couple of minutes of video currently.

I don't think you understand how outdated your information is.

You show me a broadcaster that's happy to pay for 50-80 mbit uplinks per user, and I'll show you an idiot.

The only thing you're right about here is that 120 fps might take a little while, but that's 3-5 years max. What you're not understanding is that VP9 and HEVC both had issues that prevented widespread adoption for digital and broadcast content, and the issues for VP9 have been solved by the same mechanism that is solving for AV1.

In 3 years, most users will have AV1 support in their devices, and in 5 years it will be effectively ubiquitous, so quite obviously there will be services looking to offer such content well before then.

Even the upscaler in the C9 makes 1080p high bit-rate look hard enough to distinguish from 4k unless you have them side by side and get uncomfortably close anyway. It looks terrific, I'd be surprised if anyone but the keenest of observers notice any difference in the CX at all.

It will offer a marked improvement, and may even make 4:2:0 chroma-subsampling passable when using it as a PC monitor, which is a boon for those not using 2020-released graphics cards.

  • +2

Holy crap. Amazing. Bought this TV from Appliance Central. Love it and have zero regrets.

    • +5

i really want 77" not sure 65" screen will cut it for me… hmmm

  • +10

Once you go Black, you’ll never go back.

    • +7

      Single mother?

  • Great deal OP :)

Anyone know which is better the LG C9 or the Panasonic GZ1000u?

Was hoping to get the Panasonic but since they are leaving the market the warranty side of things is a worry. Plus the Panasonic is still quite expensive right now and no good deals since the last JB one.

    • +2

Dude.. buy what you can afford. Both are wonderful TV at it's own way.

    • I thought Panasonic exited OZ Tv market, i could be wrong

    • they are both great sets but the price and warranty tip the balance for the LG imo.

    • +1

The LG C9 has HDMI 2.1 ports, which will allow 120Hz @ 4K HDR and VRR with the PS5, Xbox Series consoles, and future graphics cards. If you like gaming, the C9 would be a more future proof option.

    • -1

The made in Japan Panasonic will last you 20 plus years so no warranty needed.

      • +1

Another useless comment about tv's being made in Japan is there something wrong with you ?

    • The warranty from the retailer will outlast the manufacturer's warranty anyway.

I was going to get the GZ1000 but the C9 came in slightly cheaper at the time, don't regret it. I did like the default picture profile better on the Panasonic for movies but I'm not at all disappointed with the C9 and it's slightly better in some other ways. (Other than lack of HDR10+ of which I've only ever found a couple of movies for and plain old HDR10 is already pretty amazing / good enough for me in either case).

  • -1

As a 65C8 owner, I am soo tempted to pull a trigger on a C9 at these prices!

But I know I should hold out for a 77C10 or something right?

    • +1

      to replace your c8???

    • Maybe Valve Index could be a good choice since you already got a good TV 😊

    • +4

Why why why do you need to upgrade from a 65C8? It's not like your TV is from the caveman era, it's the previous years model!!
You must have too much money. It's just a TV, hold onto it for another 10 years not 1 year!!
BTW the following is the tech website 4K.com observation of the differences between the C8 and C9
The biggest problem with the C9 in this sense is twofold: it performs almost no differently than the C8 on some specs and where it does outperform last year's model, the difference is mostly very small: Starting with peak brightness, the C9 is in fact consistently dimmer by most measurements.

      • Basically this. Unless there a big leap no point.

        I have a $800 65” hisese.

I’d like the 75 model or 86” lg for $3k

Then again an oled will make movies look nicer but it’s pretty expensive so perhaps in a few years.

  • hmm buy now or wait until april once new models are out and they clear out old stock for $2500 or thereabouts? (new models are to be released soon huh?)

    • +3

Where have you pulled that $2500 from?

      • Wishful thinking benchmark for a 65" C9!

  • Amazing TV's.

Have the 55" C9 and 65" C9 and love them to bits! You won't get a better TV!

  • Great TV and great price!

  • +1

    $240 postage…..

    • +4

Should fit in an express post satchel.

  • Any idea how wide is the stand?

    • It's much narrower than the TV. Much narrower.

      • The photo didn't, B9 is much narrower

  • Anyone know how long delivery can be deferred for, for each of these sellers? Sent them a message, but not sure if they'll respond before the end of the weekend. Moving into a new place at the end of March, hoping to avoid having to move it from current home.

On another note, anyone know if this would fit in the back of a Mazda 3 hatchback? :)

    • It will not fit in the back of a prado.. so I’m thinkin it will not fit in the back of a Mazda 3.. the box dimensions are on the LG website.. https://www.lg.com/au/tvs/lg-OLED65C9PTA

      • Thanks! - was that laying flat or upright?

      • +1

150 series (current shape) Prado? Not many things fit in the back of them, Toyota flapped up with 3rd row seats folding into the floor and hence taking up valuable cargo height space.

        • +1

You are 100% correct!! But hey, at least there’s the 3rd row seats that never get used!! Well never get used in my household anyways.. haha

    • +1

I did it! Needed my passenger and driver seat all the way forward, and the back angle leaning forward too. Unsafe to drive, but I didn't have a choice it fit. I fit it in and got it out. Tight squeeze, but I did it! Mazda 3 Hatch, 2013.

  • -1

is twitch support available on this set?

  • +2

    I want the 77" but it's such a bullshit jump in price…

    • Good size for caravan

  • +1

Good price, but already bought brand new Hisense 65" OLED for 1700…

    • Could you explain how? Thanks in advance

      • I bought a display model from TGG which turned out to have a faulty panel, they sent me a new one…

  • does anyone who owned the c9 had any issues with ghosting?

  • Thanks OP just copped it. Been waiting.

    • +2

hope you enjoy your new tv mate, siiiicc kieeeent

      • fully sikh bruh copped it yuleh

        • did you cop 2 @striker5950?

  • or can C&C in Villawood for free

Are these reconditioned from the recent government cutbacks?

  • So tempting… if only the 15% was 15%…and that it doesnt cost 3x normal similar sized tvs. Worth it?

    • honestly, depends how much you care about the image of what you're watching. for me and others posting here? yes definitely. for most people? no, almost certainly not.

most people don't care about the settings they are watching tv under, let alone the screen.

  • VP doesn't ship to WA
and $120 shipping for AP =(

  • -7

Bought a 55" Sony A8f last year, but recently moved into a new place and want to upgrade to a 65"… Perfect timing for this deal, but does anyone know how much these TVs go secondhand, or if there's a way I could get my A8f refunded through warranty? Bought directly through Sony on their boxing Day sale in 2018

    • +14

That's not how a warranty works, you know that right?

      • +1

        lol

      • Let me talk to the manager.

      • -2

It's rare, but i have had items refunded through warranty. Unlikely, but I had to ask. :P

    • Boxing day 2018? 2018? Whatever you smoking, me want it.

      • -3

Believe it or not, there was a boxing day in 2018, and it was a little over a year ago.

      • -3

Believe it or not, there was a boxing day in 2018, and it was a little over a year ago.

    • Delusional

  • I just got a c9 55 last week as a PC monitor. unreal. i was going to keep a monitor as the primary display and use the C9 only to pay the games… but i thought (profanity) it, the burn in risk is worth it lol.

    • "…use the C9 only to pay the games"

What, like some kind of money TV?

      • huh? Money tv?

        • You mentioned you were going to use the C9 only to pay the games :p

          • @sidesw1pe: I did! changed my mind as the quality is much better than my lcd monitor.

    • Super jealous, what games do you play and what gpu do you have ?

      • +1

I convince myself i have time to play games but i don't in reality with a wife like mine. i have a gtx 2080 that only runs test demos…

          Don't even think about it.

This is a great price as well.

    • hmmm, it says "15% off the original price of selected TV's by LG", since it's on sale does that mean it won't count?

    • Just bought it. Hopefully works =)

    • If uncapped cashback, it should end up being $2,594.15 after cashback through myer

  • Thanks OP, got one via Appliance Central. With $40 shipping it came down to be $5 cheaper.

  • -1

I know 3 people who have these , all three have image retention, I’m surprised this is has never been mentioned
