  • Hi rep, can you please do a deal on the 10.8V jigsaw kit?

  • Would I need to get the impact drill for it to be strong enough to drill into bricks or would the standard drill driver with masonry drill bit be good enough?

    • +1

Yeah pretty much go for the hammer drill if you think you’ll be drilling into brick. The hammer action will help to drill into masonry comparatively better than non-hammer.

But I’d suggest another option. Go to Bunnings and get this rotary hammer, and the relevant SDS bit, and it will absolutely chew through bricks.

I’ve got the Bosch Blue Cordless Heavy Duty Hammer drill and it’s a pain in the arse for drilling into masonry. Even though this XU1 drill is ‘bottom of the line’ it will be million times better than a cordless for drilling masonry, and you won’t be chewing the guts out of the chuck, and gearbox of your cordless.

If you went down the XU1 road, I would instead go for an impact driver rather than a drill, as the impact is a lot more versatile in driving bolts, nuts, screws etc. The main reason I use my drill, rather than the impact is because I’ve got a lot of non-impact drill bits, and I occasionally need to drill steel, though you could probably get some impact steel bits (titanium, or cobalt) anyway.

awesome mate, thanks very much for the explanation and for the link. Will take a look at the XU1 products and sounds like the impact driver is what would suit me better too!

Just a slight clarification… there's a difference between an impact driver and an impact drill.

The tool in this deal is an impact drill, more commonly known as a hammer drill. The drill taps the drill bit into the wall or surface you're drilling into as it spins, like how a hammer hits a nail.

An impact driver isn't used for drilling holes. Think of it as a very powerful screwdriver. The impact in this case is rotational. Imagine attaching a spanner to a screwdriver and hammering the spanner sideways to turn the screwdriver really hard.

If you went to Bunnings and asked for an impact driver, they won't be showing you anything that's designed to drill holes. :)

IMHO brick is really soft, I think a hammer drill is perfectly suitable if you aren't drilling huge holes (5-6mm for wall plugs is fine) and have a good drill bit (i.e. not one of those $10 for 10 packs that are made of cheese). If you're drilling larger holes into concrete you'd definitely want a rotary hammer with a good SDS bit.

@eug: Noted and definitely duly noted on the part of not getting cheese bits to drill into bricks! :D Thanks again

  • Any Bosch Blue deals?

    • dont see any, damn want the cordless reciprocating saw and maybe another battery

  • Have my eye on the Bosch bench drill press.

Waiting for the good discount to come back.

    • +1

I bought that. It kicks arse

      • Good to hear - and the fact that it doesn't take up huge bench space plus is lighter than my current wobbly drill makes it interesting

  • Thanks op , purchased the secateurs for my better half. Will appreciate it as getting a bit of arthritis in the hands. Assuming will work well for this .

  • Any deals on 360 degree laser level?
