    Is this just another uber?

    • +26

Yes, only instead of US (Uber) and India (Ola) your movements will be tracked by Chinese. But hey, it's $10 off.

    • Yes, except they somehow manage to be even less ethical.

    • +1

Now with pre-verification of Communist Party drivers and users so you can feel extra safe and secure about your movements and conversations!

If they want to listen to my drunken conversations, go for it. It's their loss.

      • What's meant to give people extra sense of security after a few high-profile cases in China where share-ride passengers get killed, would definitely be used to paint it in bad light. Typical conspirator thinking. Why am I even surprised?

BTW, I recently used DIDI in Mexico. All the drivers are required to have their genuine photos on their profile, as well as all the passengers. When booking a ride, it reminds both drivers and passengers to check photo of each other and make sure it's the same person that's picking you up or taking the ride.

I guess those who are worried their photos would end up on porn websites or in Chinese Government's imaginary database can close this page and move on now.

        • Interesting! Colombia has just terminated all uber services. 8 Asian countries also seen uber out. With Ola now entering London with an actual taxi license competing against unlicensed uber one can only watch to see it fought out. London's large Indian population will embrace it fast. Australia is one of ubers most profitable markets due to states having jurisdiction about permits and the lack of sham contractor enforcement. Ola will explicitly target migrants on temporary visas a move closely looked at by Didi. Money drained out of Australia!

        • Ah yes, the imaginary Social Credit score system. How many points did you get today? :)

          https://time.com/collection/davos-2019/5502592/china-social-…

    • worse, sham contracting to the very bottom. Like burner sims…

    • Um, Didi have been in Australia for ages. Why are you only just asking this now?

  • +1

Will this stack with referral credits?

  • +1

So should we sign up via a referral code or would that make you ineligible for the half price rides?

    • You can get both. I was able to do both :)

      • But the referral credits expire 10th march?, Before Didi is available? Lol

        • It shouldn’t. My one is still sitting on pending atm

Brisbane user here. Didi being noticeably cheaper than Uber for all of my trips and doesn't seem to apply any if at all surge pricing.

Typically take short trips and it's $12 vs $16, and when there is surge involved i've seen $23 vs $36.

I've basically stopped using Uber since this came out especially since they actually give out random discounts here and there.

IIRC OzB had some exclusive signup code with heaps of promos attached so make sure you guys check!

    • +1

      Thanks for sharing your experience

      Must sign up to Didi

    • +2

I use Didi more in Brisbane also, tho Uber this week gave me 30% off for three rides which I'm using. Seems that Uber is now using locked in prices, so you know the exact fare cost.

I avoid using Ola because they applied a fake toll charge a few times and the process of getting a refund on that was very bad. An automated 'request denied' with no info on how to properly contest it further. Happened to lots of other Brissy people also.

The more the competition the more the merrier. It is time for the cabbies to wake up or go down.

    • +3

I don't think it's the cabbies, but rather the state licensing/taxing and the taxi companies. I feel for the taxi drivers themselves…

more the competition the more the merrier

Ripoff electricity prices and paying for five streaming video services says otherwise.

      • +2

I understand your point but 5 streaming services are still cheaper than Foxtel used to be, and arguably offering a much better service.

  • Great news. I've got the app already but never used it (Syd based). Will I have to create a new account to be eligible for this promo?

    • Select promotions and then go into my voucher. If you have it, should say "Sydney Early Bird Token"

Just signed up but don’t see this.

        No luck :/

Why sitting conditions for Uber/Didi/Ola is different to Taxi i.e. kids can't sit without child seat in former.

    • -1

Wow, I've been an Uber driver for 3 years now and had no idea about the child seat rule. They don't tell us this! I always thought we had the same exemption as taxis.

Personally, I think taxis should not have an exemption to the child seat rule. Rather, certain taxis should be required to carry child seats in the boot for when they're needed (the bigger 7 seater SUV/van taxis, for example). And they should be able to charge a surcharge for use of one, to cover the costs.

      • -1

No way #1 use for taxis is going to the airport

        • -1

And your point being? A child's safety should not be compromised just because it's important to get to the airport. What about getting a lift from friends, relatives, driving yourself to the airport and parking there, etc. So many other options.

  • +3

Know that we all like a bargain but ride sharing and their food delivery ventures are actively working to undermine Australian working conditions with their business model. Use the discounts/free rides then (profanity) em off. Can't wait till they're gone. Ruining the inner city with poor drivers and dangerous vehicle maneuvers/standards. Sincerely, whinging inner city bicycle rider.

    • +3

I will prefer them over taxi any day. At least their cars are clean, your feedback is taken seriously and they pay their share of tax.

      • +3

Take them over a taxi if you prefer but just accept that all are bypassing Australian Workplace Laws to operate in Australia and you are supporting that model by using them. Depends on your moral threshold and mine morphed from '(profanity) the Taxis' to 'That rider doesn't have any mirrors, is checking his phone while riding and yep, he's hit me'. I'm more pissed off at delivery services than Rideshare but they're the same animal. They also do not pay their share of tax by funnelling off to Singapore (https://www.afr.com/technology/uber-australia-makes-785m-pay…)

  • +3

Blackmouthing CCP in their ride may result in reaching Final Destination earlier, without a kidney.

On a serious note, a share ride driver once told me Uber takes ~2X% of their fare, while Ola takes 1X% And Didi takes <10%.

Supporting Ola since. Their invoicing are easier anyway as you can print out everything in 1 page for me to submit work claim.

    • +2

Uber takes a commission of 27.5%, Ola takes 12.5%, and Didi takes an arbitrary amount from 0% to 19% depending on whether the driver meets "performance targets". Didi terminates drivers for not accepting enough rides, for cancelling too many (but Uber and Ola do that too), and changes the rules on drivers with no consultation - repeatedly. They're even more unethical than Uber because while they claimed they were planning to be transparent and honest in their operations, they lied. At launch they were the same price as Uber and charged 5.5%, claiming that it would stay that way. Within 3 months they had reduced fares 10%, changed the rules so you had to accept a certain number of trips to get the 5% charge, and started banning drivers who don't accept trips.

      See https://www.businessinsider.com.au/didi-advance-australia-re…

      • +1

Ola's commission has already been changed from large cities to 15 % and provincial cities the commission going up to 20% from 1. May. Ola pays their drivers every single day. Drivers are lied to that they get the first 4 weeks at 0 commission but with customers getting 20% off the drivers get screwed the same.
China will observe and set their own rules. Gig economy minus virtually all rules. BTW in China I have observed as long as in 2008 similar all cash services. For eg lazy girls get transported by idling motorcycles very short rides for small amounts of cash. Similar as Asian rickshaws.

        • "For eg lazy girls get transported by idling motorcycles very short rides for small amounts of cash." - what about lazy boys ?

    • +1

Ola. Is actually the worst lol

This might be the only thing that Newy got before Sydney

  • Referral voucher is valid for 14 days only. Sydney users should not redeem the referrer code until the service is available in Sydney. You have 30 days to activate the code and take your first ride.

  • How do they know if you are sydney user?
I was planning on using this service on my return into australia in a few days but i hadnt signed up yet. Also wish referral credits will be also mentioned in the posts for these kinds of things, I usually end up forgetting to check unless its listed on the post

  • Where do you put the referrer code? It doesnt seem to work when i put it into promotions while signing up, it says to enter it later. I also dont have the sydney promotion being applied, has anyone got it?

  • i Guess it’s a bad time for these type of promos. With all these virus do ppl even share rides?

  • So anyone got the 50% off working ?

    • It starts today.

      Showing in my account now.

  • Happy to report that it's cheaper than Uber, that's despite Uber giving me 60% off
