These P17’s could be budget entry-level bookshelf speakers in a stereo setup, or as budget rear’s in a surround / home theatre setup.

From my understanding these P17 are the passive version of the active R1700BT (P12 was passive version of R1280T), another difference is the R1700BT are angled cabinet, these P17 are conventional straight-on.
I think P17 are an alternative to the popular Voll’s.

Hi, how is the sound quality of these please? I never bought bookshelf speaker before.

  • Also interested in this. See lots of Edifier deals on here but no idea which ones to get. 4" drivers seem a little small for music?

    • Please keep in mind compared to the other Edifier deals, this one is a passive speaker so you will need an amplifier to power them.

      • I'm aware of that and have an amplifier to power them if need be but would prefer to spend a little more to get better quality if this is the case.

From what I can see, they don't do a 5.5/6" passive speaker, only active?

        • +1

Yes, the only passive models by Edifier are the P12 & P17.
The majority of Edifier’s line-up is active speakers.

In Australia it is quite rare to see deals on passive bookshelf speakers priced between $100 & $600 (KEF Q150 etc).

KEF Q100 @ $299 & Monitor Audio 100 @ $274 are the only two deals I have seen on Ozbargain.

          • @thebadmachine: Hi. What's a good budget amplifier that costs no more than $50? How will this speakers' sound quality compare to Logitech Z623? Thanks in advance.

            • +1

              @El Psy Kongroo: -
Regarding a good budget amp under $50.
There are a few $50 options on Amazon AU, but their quality will be questionable (possible high distortion levels with much less power than stated).

Others users have recommended the SMSL AD18 as a solid unit, but that is about 3x in price.

How will this speakers' sound quality compare to Logitech Z623?

I own neither speaker, but I would expect the P17 will have more clarity in mids / highs, and less bass compared to Z623.

They don't have any lower bass. 4inch speakers should be matched with sub woofers to get full bass range. These speakers instead are much more sensitive in mid bass, attempting to give an illusion of a fuller bass. When listening to music such as from Interstella, there's parts of the music that you can't hear on these speakers and same is with 1280t. So people say don't complain just buy the 1850 and get a sub…. Well the main reason I think many choose edifier is value for money, and when you have to buy a separate powered sub, that's not ecconomical.

I think you are right though, if you don't want to use a sub, 5,5.5inch can bring you the lower bass frequencies, with still the speaker not being too large, and if in an apartment, you don't annoy neighbours like you do with subs

  • rated power is a bit wacky

i dont think i own an amp that weak to be honest(20w)

i'm tempted to run them on a big time power amp see how they go

    • +1

Both amp and speaker manufacturers inflate their wattage figures something mental, and post peak values at that.

20w is a fair bit of sound.

      • The best I've seen is speakers smaller than these using a PMPO rating, which is to say how much power they can take before the voice coil evaporates.

  • Powered speakers were only for a few dollars more… on this deal

  • 77db and 20w max , I don't think these are for people that like loud music.

Going by there other speakers i would say they would sound good but don't expect high volumes from these

    • I'm thinking these figures are way off.

77dB is nothing really, just under an avg. vacuum cleaner.

      • +1

77 db for 1 watt and if i remember right for every 3 db it will require double the power so 80db will need 2 watt and 83db will need 4 watt etc , so should top out around 91 to 93 db tops

        • Yes and the measurement is also at distance of 1M, so I think these are intended to be for desktop / near-field, or at most a room on the smaller side.

  • For this money I would get the new volls.
They're 5" and reach lower. Quite possibly no need for a sub for music purposes

    • Frequency response seems to be the same for both.

      Voll B50: 55hz-20khz frequency response

      Edifier P17: FREQUENCY RESPONSE 55 – 20,000 Hz

Voll has better power-handling at 65 watts though.

      • yeah, but thats probably just on paper, a larger driver and box has to reach lower freqs..

        • Yes it is possible the FR rolls-off more slowly below 55hz on the Voll’s.
