  • Anyone know if the 4 port adapter actually does network switching?

  • +1

I just use a Wireless-N router in repeater mode in the lounge room.
Cheaper, more flexible, and improves coverage for wireless devices.
Yes,(unlike G) you can reliably stream HDTV video over it too, through a few brick walls.
Maybe not so good if you live in a concrete mansion, but then you probably have cat-5 cabling already.

  • Some places charge more for a single adapter, so this is a good deal in my book.

  • They are not gigabyte port.

I was initially going to purchase the NP203 but after all the mixed reviews on whirlpool. I went with the WD Livewire for $119 (price matched MSY prices at Dicksmith) and couldn't be happier. The WD Livewire has 4 ports on each device if you ever need it.

  • I just wish these things worked on a surge board as I want my stuff protected

    • In your case it would probably better to go with something like the NP204 which has AC pass-through which would allow you to plug in a powerboard.

      • I have 2 power plugs in my room, one for my surge board where eveything goes into. The the spare one which would be for the EOP, but do these EOP have a built in surge protection to stop something traveling over the ethernet cable?

        • Don't think so, the one I linked to above only has noise filtering. You'd have to place a separate surge protection device (with ethernet in/out) between the power point and the EOP device if you want to surge protect the EOP device and the ethernet.

        • Actually, I don't think it is recommended that EOP devices be plugged into surge protectors/filters as they can affect the quality of the connection. My bad!

    • my netgear xavb1004 worked on the belkin surge board (1 i got from ozbargain)

  • got my netgear one from msy for $91.
think netgear is a better brand imo

the unit looks pretty gd and works well.

power consumption on these things can be relatively high, especially considering you will probably leave them on 24/7

    • Hell yeah, around 10W each end.

  • What's the pros/cons between this and wireless N modem/routers?

    • +1

Off the top of my head:

      EOP pros:
Can give a more stable connection than wireless N
Can provide connectivity where wireless is not ideal (ie high concentration of other WiFi networks in the area) or where signals may not penetrate.

      EOP cons:
Tends to be slower than 802.11n
Connection speed is dependent on your electrical wiring (ie how it is wired up, the quality of the cables themselves)
      Power consumption
Can't plug it into a powerboard. Needs to be directly plugged into a powerpoint on its own.

      • thanks GreenGuava, I guess I might just get a wireless N modem/router then! :)

        • I have a Belkin N1 Vision wireless router and I'm looking at these EOP devices cos the router signal just isnt good enough.
