  • Good times, I'm due for an oil change and this is my spec!

  • +4

5w40 should be in the title. Seems like a very good deal

  • Would this work in place of 5w 30

    • +3

Yes, especially safe in the summer months.

  • I wonder how this stuff compared with Castrol EDGE for a small turbo diesel. I'm due to change the oil in my i30 :)

    • You'll need to review what oil specification Hyundai require and it should be written in the manual (or the service booklet).

This guide will also help, but still confirm with the manual:

      • +1

Yes the oil is suitable from that perspective. I knew that already.

I'm more interested in how it compares with Castrol Edge.

        Thank you though.

        Interested in other's personal experiences.

        • +1

Not too sure, they will each have some data published on their data sheets that will allow you to compare.

Personally, I've always been sceptical of the low prices on Gulf Western and just stuck with Penrite or Nulon. Probably is nothing wrong with GW and the prices are likely just lower because don't have the brand rep like the others.

          • @stewy: I've been sceptical too. However, at that price, I might give it a go. Can report back in a few weeks if you would like.

        • The only thing I can say is that some Castrol Edge is officially MB229.5 approved. This Gulfwestern oil is not officially MB229.5 approved.

I'm a huge oil chemistry nerd (I pop up in all these threads eventually).
The thing to remember is that unless you're doing extreme things, or suffer a failure of some sort, "Oil is Oil".

There is a film of liquid, that is stopping metal from touching.
The additive package really only comes into it, in conditions where the film would fail (shock load, pump losing pressure, low oil, etc).
And in that instance, it's up to additives to be a barrier (this one claims to have a ZINC package, which is good).

If we were talking big sudden load changes; drifting, aggressive down shifting, extended redline where foaming might occur, then the additive package becomes very important, because there is a real risk of the oil film tearing through, or becoming too thin from heat to hold.

However, in any sort of family car, and ESPECIALLY if the car is auto, the RPM is kept neutral, the gearbox takes the brunt of any shock to the driveline, compression is often lower than performance cars, etc etc.

          Basically? TLDR?
In a street driven 'daily' vehicle, the cheapest correct oil weight + Good change intervals will keep it alive just as long as the best oil.

          • @MasterScythe: synthetic over dino though right?

            • @TEER3X: Only if you're going to use the advtantages of synthetic; that is, extended drain intervals.

Synthetics only two advantages are higher shear strength, and through that, longer life, and higher TBN to remain less acidic for longer.

  • How's this with diesel engine and dpf

  • Comparison to Shell Helix Ultra?

    • +2

      No comparison. Shell trumps it.

  • Gulf Western brand is so underrate, i use it every 5000km
    best and cheap oil

      Barely used at 5k.

  • has anyone able to buy some? the website still says $39.99, just wana confirm before i run out and get some

    • +1

According to the picture above, its "In store only"

      • yeah that's fine, just wanted to check if anyone got any. I went to the store there was plenty of stock and got 2

        • I got a few GULF WESTERN OIL 15W-40 5L as well. $17.99 each.

    • Yes, I bought one from the Chadstone store. As other have pointed out, it is in-store only.

Bought some at different Autobarn stores north Brisbane and managed to get Supercheap to price match.
At $20 it's probably the best priced synthetic oil and below cost. Had a chat with GW head office about the oil. They said it has been re-formulated with added group 4 to meet 5w and MB229.5. HTHS is 4.1 and has high zinc content and also has high TBN. It would compare well with Penrite HPR5.
My 2014 Falcon FG (Barra) loves this oil, especially in this heatwave.
Oil is also good for motorbikes (JASO MA) wet clutch.

At full price (over $50) there are better oils, but at $20 you would be mad to miss it.

    ps.
There is still older SynX 5000 10W40, but this is an older formulation, and won't be produced.

  • Anyone used this in their VW or other euro cars if they could share their reviews? If it meets the specs it should be fine right?
