  • What's the rule of thumb for life expectancy for these? If one has been sitting on a garage shelf for 5 years and only used once for a mower should it be disposed of at sca? Or would it still be fine for a mower?

As long as it's not stored in a really hot place easily 3-5 years unopened. It's not something that ages that much when it's not inside an engine - if it was unstable, it would not do a good job inside an engine…

A lot of councils have an oil waste dropoff service as well

Thank you for this info, greatly appreciated!

        thanks two.

      • You were spot on, this oil was still in perfect condition.

Purchased in November 2013, used once at that time for mower and then stored on the shelves in the garage unused until yesterday.

I probably would have discarded it just to be safe if it wasn't for your knowledgeable advice. Thanks again

  • Thanks OP, good deals on some of the meguiars stuff. Been meaning to try their 'ceramic' *cough spray.

    • Im actually reasonably impressed with the meg ceramic stuff from my limited experience using it, as a top up spray over the top of an already coated car (gyeon prime). A fair bit cheaper than some other options if it actually lasts, but it definitely beads and repels water well. there's a new liquid version and ceramic quik detailer coming out shortly as well.

you saved me a 14km drive. thanks

  • I've always wondered, from what I've read, is partial synthetic like this oil is even worth its rrp?

  • Only a semi-synthetic, but great at the price.

    • +2

      Good enough for older vehicles

      • Apparently fully synthetic is not good for older engines.

        • Why?

@placard: At the risk of blowing up this ozb thread i'll try to cover this… not that i have any investment in any of the products or any industry affiliation, just someone who works on his own cars

some people worry about the full synthetic oils "dissolving" gunk and sludge from previous oils but I think the risk is overstated IMO and comes from the past when engines were more finicky and early synthetic oils (we're talking 70s/80s here…) were mainly ester-based as opposed to now. Esters had a tendency to remove old deposits around seals and make them leak. Nowadays "full synth" is usually a Group III oil, basically just a highly refined and processed mineral oil anyway.

To me, it's better to protect the engine even if its old with a better oil. Unless your oil needs something like a monoweight oil , engine has flat tappets (so needs a massive zinc antiwear package) or special requirements I can't really see what the issue is. Just get whatever the best oil is you can afford that's in the appropriate viscosity range as given in your manual and meets the specs listed in the manual.

        • depends.

Castrol edge full synth 5w30 works just fine in my older 2005 x-trail and hardly loses much oil at all between changes. That's even after i personally put a lot of HX7 and Magnatec semi-synth 10w40 in it and it's got 245000 K on the clock now.

  • Are engine oil filters recyclable?

    • I guess you could drive all the way to your local rubbish tip and put it in one of those specialised bins where it probably ends up in landfill anyways or gets sent to China with all the other recycling material.

    • I think they are meant to be, at the same place that should take waste oil.
