Not surprised about Dianella and Kalamunda in WA, both small, quiet shopping centres that skew extremely old demographically.

    • +1

i'm not sure how any shop in Dianella outside of the majors manage to survive. it's so dead quiet no matter what time/day of the week i go there. even on xmas eve, there were barely any people in Coles.

i guess most in the area just go to Galleria or Mirrabooka

      • Probably cheap rent but then wages… it makes me wonder as well!

      • +1

As long as Také Sushi never close down I'll remain a happy man.

        • Don't forget Charcoal Chicken, that would be missed if it closed down.

  • +4

Was it when Dick Smith shut down and staff were taking most of the good games for themselves?

    • +5

Yep, i remember the staff were raiding the shelves for the high value games while we waited outside behind the shutters for them to open.

    • +4

Chances are new/valuable stock will be transferred to other stores. Once the large stores go, they will sell new stock back to the wholesalers. That's what GAME did.

I wouldn't be putting this on the frontline retail employees. Working at EB is punishment enough.

    • +4

Can you blame them when they are about to lose their jobs?

  • Gees! Sounds like EBGames wont be here till Christmas…………

  • +1

I've been noticing a lot with all EB Games stores, but it looks like they have cleared a lot of their inventory through various sales and have also been stocking more cautiously. Overall I just feel that stores won't last much longer. EB Games has two clientele's, gamers and enthusiasts who like the pre-order fun and don't hunt for bargains or want the exclusive editions. Then the parents and grandparents who are not bargain or internet savvy and promised their kid or buying a xmas/bday gift and all they want is games and know nothing about it.

However this market is reducing over the years and it's only going to be a matter of time.

I really can't imagine the future where retail is reduced significantly, I'm not sure what stores would stay open.

    • +1

      Barbers, Women's hair/nails….

I've actually seen Barbers opening where women's stores shut….

  • I knew this was coming. There will be more store closures too as digital downloads become the majority.

EBGames has been a sinking ship for years and parent company Gamestop is haemorrhaging millions of dollars every year.

Was hoping they could last until PS5 comes out, sucks there wont be anywhere to trade in consoles. Doesnt seem like anyone got any bargains though

    • +1

      They aren't all closing…

  • +1

Just been to the Blacktown store.

Bit of a ghost town. Looks like they’ve been clearing stuff for awhile.

Current prices aren’t dramatically different to the usual.

    Oh well.

    • I was there too and the guy said they sold most of it on the first day 9 January

  • +4

I had the pleasure of a Toy R Us closing down big % off sale . All the good items magically disappear so don't expect great things like Nintendo consoles at great prices .

  • Rockdale store mentioned that the sale would start next week. Not sure when exactly but marketing will go out with an email for it and theyre expecting a 10-20% sitewide sale which probably isn't worth much

  • +2

For those considering pre ordering the next gen consoles through EB. Just be aware that whilst I would say they will still be around by the end of the year, there could also be a chance they could be in receivership by then and you will lose your deposit.

  • Called up and EB games said their software is 20% off and their clothing and stuff like that is 60% off.

  • +1

Picked up a few items from the Bribie Island EBGames, got a HORI fight stick mini for the Nintendo Switch for $50

    • I went into Bribie too, just picked up some accessories like PS stand, mousepad. Did get Jedi:Fallen Order for $41 though. Not too bad.

  • +7

Discounts that are available in-store here

    • Someone must’ve been lopsided when they slapped that piece of paper on

  • +1

Sucks about Cleveland. I grew up there and the store is nicer than the vic point one down the road.

  • +1

Majura Park has the following; (that I asked about)

    20% OFF New Games
    40% OFF Pre Owned
    30% OFF Accessories

Price is off the already reduced price.

    Heaps of stock still.

    • The sale hasn't started when I was there this morning.

      • +1

No signs - but discounts being applied at register.

  • +2

    30% off accessories
    40% Off loot
    60% off t-shirts clothing etc
    40% off preowned software

That was at Underwood had mostly crap left

    • How much Nintendo switch stuff was there?

      • +1

There were heaps of Switch stuff (new and preowned) but a lot of them didn't have sale stickers so it's % off full RRP. Compared to PS4 and Xbox where they were discounted off the sale price, so I picked up a few niche JRPGs. This was at ~9:30am, spent longer at the line than browsing…

    We got media attention!

      Gerry’s OzBargain Professionals™

The radio station clickbait sites are running it too.

  • This is mostly due to online purchases where you can download the games.
    Same as Blockbuster with Netflix.
    EBgames is next

    • Ruins the resell value though.

  • As soon as I read this, I knew Docklands would be on the list. That District/Waterfront area is a ghost town.

    • Apparently Docklands is not closing down. I'm in there now.

  • +3

Docklands VIC staff have advised the store is not closing down

    • So no discounts then? Was going to head down after work.

      • Went there at lunch, store is operating like normal

Hate to dampen the sentiment towards store closure and unemployment but EB Games is an incredibly toxic company. The bottom line is all that matters. It’s a business I get it. But employees there are treated like crap. The ones that survive there are the ones who become equally toxic. I remember working there and we spent a good 6-7 hours setting up for a sale. We didn’t even get paid. We got paid in pizza. If you didn’t assist then your shifts would be cut. Likewise when you’d close the store for the day you wouldn’t get paid for counting the tils vacuuming and arranging the merchandise. So about half an hour each day unpaid. I remember working 80 hours one week over Xmas under the assumption of over time. None was paid because payroll deducted “breaks” from your hours.

A manager of the Melbourne central store was so over worked during the Christmas break that a senior area manager stopped by to offer support. This support took the guise of a Mars bar in an EB mug.

During another mid year sale head office sent a “rescue pack” to boost morale. This consisted of a packet of wizz fizz and some liquorice straps.

Everyone young kid wants to work there. They know this. As such if you don’t do what you’re told they’ll either cut shifts or replace you. I hope amazon devours this sack of dick company. And all the snakes with it.

I only shop there because of their return policy.

I’ve got loads of stories. Hit me up if you want more. Here’s to saving money and sticking it to the man. Too right. I love this website

LOL, not surprised but still found it funny. Area managers never change.

    • are they salary employees or paid by hour.
For salary, it is expected to work extra hours if required.

      • We were all casual at the time. Managers got it worse. On average 50-60 hours a week starting salary $35-$40k

        • okay, yeah that's a bit rough.

    • +4

      “I hope amazon devours…”

Not that amazon is any better.

    • The whole “churning new people because every kid wants to work with Video Games”- thing reminds me of the Anime industry in that so many want to draw for a living, forgoing basic pay to live the dream.

  • +4

It would be nice they would just have one factory size outlet like Ikea with museum, arcade, loots, cosplay all year round instead of shops everywhere in Sydney.

Just not much to do in Sydney.

    Where is our Disneyland!

Revenged finally only took me 5 years to see them burn to the ground, you know how they treat honesty loyal customer who spends almost $57k cold hard cash buying all their amiibos. The Aussie store. Manager humiliated me in front of 10 other ppl like i was stealing 5 $18 amiibo. Told, me I’m banned he red flag me from buying any more and called head office called me a amiibo offender cancel all his online order when he put in a order.

5 years on lol I’m still auto banned, see what honesty and loyalty gets u pay a shitty business $57k and they hang you like hangman. Lol solid snake I know who you are and judgelord who you are as well. Funny seeing team mates here ranting on about ebgames just as I have Rockdale ebgames,

Thursday is today let’s get one final Karma revenge, I’ll go buy all his amiibo let see if he kick me out LOL

    • +14

Wait but why are you buying $57,000 worth of Amiibo?

      • Amiibo fetish.
        I would just buy a Amiibo N2 instead…. saves alot more space…..

      • +2

I think EB did him a favour. Addictions can be a sickness.

    • +3

wow, please do elaborate the story
      grab popcorn

      • +2

        Me too. I’m intrigued.

  • +1

I was into the big amiibo craze the world had a world war over them 5 years ago, LOL come on surely you knew how it was 5 years ago how they sold out in 2 mins everything in world when each toy came out. That was my business goal investment I did 5 years ago. And I achieved it

    • +2

You waited 2 years to post on ozbargain after registering and $57k on amiibos is your first comment? Please elaborate on your tales of EB

    • +3

So you were flipping them for profit?

Not surprising you got banned Amazon would have banned you too. Amazon banned me from buying certain products for similar practices.

  • WOW a Eb Games store didn't work in Blacktown, I am so surprised, more would have been stolen than bought.

  • +1

see article from Kotaku for the full list of closing stores.

    • +1

Someone can't count, because EB says in the article that 19 stores are closing, but there's 20 listed there, and also 20 listed here on OzB?

we will be closing 19 unprofitable stores at the end of January.

Or do they mean that there was 19 unprofitable + one profitable = 20 stores closing?

  • +1

Docklands must've been bad info because they're not closing. Might wanna remove that from the list before anyone else wastes their time.

    • +1

      Thanks, have removed.

      • All good.

  • +1

    Ozbargain gets a mention.

"It appears the gaming icon is facing an uncertain future, with a list shared by OzBargain confirming most states and territories would be affected by closures.

An EB Games outlet in Majura Park in the ACT, for example, will fold on January 25, while NSW branches in Blacktown, Rockdale, Winston Hills and Birkenhead Point will also shutter.

In Queensland, the Inala, Bribie Island, Underwood and Cleveland stores are earmarked for closure along with those in Adelaide City Cross, Brickworks, Hallett Cove and Harbourtown in South Australia, Dianella and Kalamunda in Western Australia and Dandenong, Docklands and potentially Hamilton in Victoria."

Ah, news.com.au. The "news" site that trawls Whirlpool and OzBargain and Mumsnet for stories. Imagine studying journalism and then having to cite OzBargain as your source. SMH

can spread some vicious rumors here and let news.com.au do the work

  • Didn't see this posted so apologies if it has been but this guy has been covering the Gamestop closures in the US. Phase 3 Has BEGUN! Massive Store Closures!

  • +1

was just in southland EB about a week a go and the guy there was saying then how bad the sales figures had been

he said Christmas should have been bonkers but was down 30% on what it used to be

i think honestly its more about their prices for a lot of things, they were always 10-20% higher than elsewhere

about the only thing these days i used EB games for was pre-ordering limited editons or other things like that, that i couldn't get elsewhere or price matching stock, sometimes 2nd hand refurbs

  • Tried getting an elite controller and they said they sent it all back to HQ. typical

  • -2

No jobs but more migrants. Dis gonna work out great

  • What happens to preorders at these stores? Can we cancel and move the deposit to a purchase or transfer the preorder to another branch?

Are PlayStation store top up cards discounted?

    • Pre orders used to be store by store. Presently they’re kept centrally then deliveries distributed to each store. You can always cancel a pre order for a refund. Or transfer it to another store. To avoid this happening in the future I’d recommend pre ordering online. PlayStation credit cant be discounted as it’s printed on the receipt via software/cloud service or something. Staff members can’t get discount on credit either

  • Not surprised EB are closing down some stores. One of my local and favourite EB Games stores on Sydney's northern beaches closed last year. One week they were in business. Next week they had closed the store without any notice it was closing.

    • Dee Why? Balgowlah? Used to work there.

      • Dee Why in the Grand Shopping Centre.

        • Yep. Used to work there. Had the fondest of memories.

  • why did i have to be on news.com to find out about this, why isnt this front page on ozbargain!

damn shame, one of the few stores left where you can actually "see" the physical product. i am sad.

  • they rely.on kids bring in their parents and buying.iver prices games and pre owned ganes
however this is slowing dying as new parents are like 30 to 40 year old gamers of old and they know eb games are a RIP.off and it's cheaper to buy online

their pre owned games cash cow.is.slowly dying

  • Just got back from Rockdale, absolute pandemonium, had never seen the store so busy.

Managed to snag some good deals, including RDR2 for 23.40, AO Tennis for free (not sure why he gave it to me for free but eh), and some Switch games like Troll and I and Children of Morta. The real savings are on the preowned goods, but almost all preowned Switch games were gone by the time I got there.

  • +2

I have $150 in gift cards from past birthdays and Christmases that I was saving to knock off the price of a PS5 when they release. Will they last until then?

    • +1

One thing retailers do is that they close down after Christmas.

That way, unwitting customers buy gift cards as Christmas presents which they then refuse to honour in the new year when they close down.

Dick Smith did it when they died and Ziera shoes are doing the same. My wife got a $200 gift card as a gift before Christmas. Ziera refuses to honour it a month later.

So, my advice is use your gift cards. If there’s nothing you want, buy gifts for upcoming birthdays etc. I’d hate for you to be stuck with them.

    • +2

Not all EB Games are closing (and you can use the cards at any EB/Zing) and it will depend when you received the card as for how long they will last (I believe ones issued recently don't have an expiry).

      • +1

Yeah but I wasn't sure when the release date for the new consoles would be. October - December this year apparently, so my store should be safe until then. I'll preorder asap though just in case. And yep no expiry dates

        • man I wouldn't be pre-ordering consoles until after the start of the new financial

          • @petry: True. Do you know if you can pay a preorder with gift cards then cancel the preorder and recieve cash?

            • @PCbro: Dunno and rules change

  • So has anyone found any bargains at all?

    • This…. I am waiting for comments on what good deals there are. So far everyone is just giving their opinion on the stores demise.

    • $10 shirts although not much left in size small

  • Wheres the bargains ??
is there anything even left in these stores? we have heard nothing. what about the Dandenong store?

    • +1

EB Games Dianella had plenty of loot left when I went in the evening yesterday. Lots of accessories (controllers, keyboards and the like), shirts and plushes..

      • good price?
not really what im after but just wondering lol

        • +1

Yeah, for just under $50 I got myself a PlayStation shirt, travel mug, two pokemon nano-blocks and a hat. I'm happy with it.
