    • It’s a town all right

    • +1

Probably one of the only towns that would cause a riot if Blacktown was a different suburb, but then named Blacktown.

Lots and lots of Somalian Immigrants hang around Blacktown CBD during the day, there’s nothing wrong with that, as there is clusters everywhere such as Cabramatta and the Vietnamese community, Liverpool and the Lebanese community, it’s just coincidence.

To be clear, Blacktown use to be Blacks Town named by Aboriginals so don’t try the racist card here.

      • A vote was put in 2016 to change the name due to the racial concerns, but was turned down even by the Aboriginal community. Most people use it as historical relevance so if they don't have an issue with it, then I don't think anyone else should in all respect.

    • +1

Blacktown is a place filled of negging ozbargainers

Enter at your own risk, you might not leave the town alive

  • +1

You can add Rockdale to the NSW list too

    • +1

Any idea when Rockdale's last day is?

      • Was in there today and overheard 25-Jan was their final day.

On another note, about the only bargain I saw was some shirts down to $3 each.

        • Bummer. I was going to pop in and see if there was any cheap games.

  • +9

With the way they do business ie Price match only within 5km and has to be a BIG name store, sure more will be closing down.

    • +3

I doubt losing business from Ozbargainers doing price matching is affecting their bottom line that badly

      • +5

Not ozbargainers but everyone. Everything is generally more expensive at EB.

Just checked Modern Warfare on PS4. $99 new… JB have it at $79, pretty sure the boxing day sale it was $59 at JB.

So you going to waste your time in these small cramped stores with maybe 2 staff, signage hanging everywhere, kids everywhere, just to price match? Or you going to go to JB and get it at the better price?

IMO EB Games has always had a terrible shopping experience.

        • +2

          "Everyone" doesn't price match.

If you actually did hang around in an EB, you'd realise they target a consumer that simply walks in, pays asking and walks out.

Also it's not true, EB can do some pretty good sales (which they run virtually year round). They are quite regularly cheaper than JB on many items.

If you walk in to JB and buy this: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/nintendo-switch-rayman-le…

          You'd be pretty stupid: https://www.ebgames.com.au/product/nintendo-switch/217643-ra…

Even EBs regular price is lower. (I'm aware the game has been cheaper in general but that is todays price)

        • I buy most of my games digital these days, and I get the Smart Spending thing through my wife's work which gets me 10% off at EB. So I buy $100 of EB gift cards for $90, use that to buy $100 of pre-paid Playstation store cards and just wait for stuff to go on sale on PS Store.

If it weren't for that, though, I don't think I'd ever set foot in an EB store these days. I guess when the next gen consoles come out I might buy at EB if that 10% off makes it cheaper than the 5% discount I get at JB.

  • +11

Not sad at all, they sell unsealed 'new' games
    See ya later

    • +3

So do JB for PC titles. Too many scumbags stole Steam/Origin/Uplay activation codes.

      • Can’t comment on PC as I don’t play PC, only consoles
Amazon and JB are my go to, heck even ebay is better

And that’s before you take into account EB’s inflated prices

        • +1

And that EB won't even price match any consoles, even if a Target or Big W is in the same centre and has stock. All EB stores have a no console matching policy

    • +2

So does JB, Big W, Target, etc. All stock is gutted. Usually only get sealed if you pre-order or its a new game.

      • +1

Hence why my go to is Amazon and JB. Ozgameshop is sealed too, but delivery times. I don’t buy games from Big W or Target either unless it’s dirt cheap.

Perhaps it’s my JB but I’ve only ever received an unsealed copy from them twice for delivery, which I returned

        • Yeah, I usually order from Amazon. Also they tend to get me the game a day or two earlier. Kinda miss browsing the shops for games but there's no point nowadays.

        • They can be opened and resealed too, you can never tell

          • +1

@buckster: Depending on the product - absolutely! Back in my DVD retail days, when returning stock to some suppliers they required products to be in their original shrink-wrapping. Amazing what you can accomplish with a Stanley knife and a fine strip of sticky tape along the bottom where the original seam is sealed… unless you knew specially to look for it, it was almost impossible to identify.

        • +4

Every JB I've been to always sells unsealed crap with their terrible stickers plastered all over it.

    • +4

I even got very badly scratched discs sold as "brand new". You wouldn't be able to damage the disc that much even if you rubbed it against the floor for 30 seconds. Staff member told me it was his mis-handling during packing it in the case.. lol! It was probably 5 years ago. Never gave EB games 1 more cent since then. Never missed it.

      • +3

I've bought games that were on sale advertised as new, only to receive what were obviously used discs. One of the cases even had food crumbs inside the plastic sleeve. EB is as shady as they come when it comes to pushing used titles and from what I've heard they really pressure their sales staff to do so. No wonder they're going out of business.

        • Used games are where they make the bulk of their revenue

    • +3

That's an unfortunate need in retail stores - because shits with sticky fingers steal things if they're left on the shelf new & sealed. Stores have tried to use various methods to prevent this (e.g. various types of security cases), but they are either ineffective or don't deter the shits, or take up too much retail space.

The only time you'd get something still sealed from most retail stores is if they have extra stock stashed behind the counter - and this would only be for the most popular releases where they'd expect to sell through the stock. Stores like EB wouldn't stock multiple copies of back catalogue titles, and they wouldn't bother stocking up on most new releases due to others undercutting, so any stock they'd order in would be on display.

That all being said, there are still ways to open products and still keep them in good condition - I used to do it when I ran a CD / DVD store. Most of the games I've seen at EB stores in the past have had cases which were scuffed to shit, covered in numerous marks where price tags had been applied and removed… why would someone want to buy a scuffy shitty looking product when they can get it elsewhere, especially in this price-match world?

      • +11

Put cardboard display cards on the stands and keep the sealed disc packs behind the counter. Problem solved.

        • +1

or just laminate the game cover for new games and that will save lots of shelf space for other things making the shop more tidy that most of them are.

    • +2

Everytime they gave me unsealed I asked for a sealed one, they guy went in the back and grabbed one

    • +2

I once bought a Zzap64 magazine at a newsagent and they couldn't find the cassette that was supposed to be attached to the cover.

  • +2

Good thing about closing the inala store 😂😂😂😂

Went there once and never again went back

    • Why not? I’m planning to go there tomorrow.

      • +1

Mostly because it's in Inala lol

  • +2

@ OP add Adelaide City Cross store to this thanks :)

    • Damn. Expected that. Silly to have two next to each other.

      • Yeah, this one hardly surprised me…. They are pretty close to each other….

  • Looks like i know where I’ll be going tomorrow…

    • +19

      Bras n Things?

      • +5

        Afterwards.

  • I believe the good stuff are bought by staffs….

  • +19

Haha EB games, what a joke. Overpriced new and used games, poor price matching policy, the list goes on. No surprise they are finally closing stores with such a failed business model.

    • +3

JB HiFi does better prices on new game
      releases

      • +4

Target and Amazon seem to have the best prices on release for games in my experience

    • they had a great returns policy and their price matching policy wasn't that bad. In reality kept the customer and for every 1 game they price-matched they probably sold 5-7 games at full price

  • +7

When ever I walk into EB, it just feels like Blockbuster.

    • +1

Its ending up like Blockbuster too :)

      • Last year the Blockbuster down the road from me closed, and this year the EB Games down the road from me is closing. So you're right.

  • Antiquated business practices from a bygone era

  • +23

All expensive stock would be moved to the next closest store I bet and the shelves would be full of copies of FIFA 14 at full price

  • +7

The rise of digital copy sales + very high prices from EB, this closing down is only a matter of time and I am sure it is only the beginning.

I am a lv4 EB member, last time I wanted to use my birthday offer to trade in some old games for Xbox live gift cards in their Hurstville store, the staff treated me as a cheater and a beggar, talked to me in a cocky and offensive way, kept checking my ids and email, and let me use the offer in the end with great reluctance. Afterwards I took EB as my last choice for gaming purchase. I do wish stores like EB would close down soon.

    • EB Games nets in excess of $600 mil in annual sales in their Australian operations across a network of more than 400 stores. These closures represent less than 5% of their total network.

It honestly just sounds like simple and clean-cut business practice; reduce the herd of unhealthy stores.

      • what is your last time see a post about EB store closing down here?
Why does Eb have 'biggest sale ever' more often than before?

        Let us wait and see.

        • You have the metrics on the frequency of EB Sales? Neat.

          • -1

@seanj: No, but I used to be a regular customer in the last decade, my observations may not be precise, but at least has values.

  • +6

Went to Blacktown today, the only good thing I saw were Deus ex mankind divided and the evil within for Xbox one $2 each.

Aside of that everything more expensive than last end of financial year sale.

Also, Blacktown store is well known for having really low stock in most of the interesting things.

    • Thanks, I'll still check it out, weird how the blacktown one is closing down.

  • +4

In the case of the Adelaide store that's closing, it's most likely because it's only a small store in a bit of an obscure location - and there is a much bigger store literally across the road from them (2 minute walk if that). Can't really speak for any of the other stores though - I don't shop at EB unless they've something stupidly cheap that no-one else has.

Wouldn't surprise me if there were more closures in the future though - given how poorly retail is going at the moment (especially in the games sector, with the likes of JB and Amazon undercutting everyone)… would explain why they've expanded so much into the merch / "Zing" side of things, although that won't be enough to save them - especially given half that stuff is the type of thing people would buy online cheaper (and in better condition too).

Their online presence is an epic fail too - shitloads of products, but actually finding stores with any stock of anything good isn't quick and easy… and the last time I ordered a pile of games from their website (that were on sale but NEW), what I received were shitty old display copies that were scuffed to buggery - never again!

    • Digital media too…. Next generation will be even more so. Physical media sales will only get smaller.

    • +3

Wouldn't be surprised if the Zing merch model outlasted EB. I'd assume the margin on merch is way better than games, and things like Pop Vinyls sell like hot cakes. It's also basically the default shop for clueless parents at birthdays/Xmas time.

Not to mention there's actually some value in being able to see merch in person and not only on a product marketing page with dubious photoshop. You can't say the same about games.

  • +1

add brickworks SA to the list. Just got an email.

  • +3

Dandenong, Victoria is also closing please add to list

  • +6

Inala is probably suffering due to the constant 100% discounts on certain items

    • ?

      • Probably talking about the five fingered discount

      • -1

I'm guessing you live in Inala mate 😅

        • +1

Nah, quite a few km's down the street but it has a reputation

  • I do hope EB games can bring GameStop exclusives to AU, like the New 2DS XL Hylian Shield Edition. But they didn't, so bye.

    • Sometimes we got better stuff than Gamestop, like the Link's Awakening Steelbook Ed (vs Dreamer Ed), or the gold DS pre-order bonus for Phantom Hourglass, etc.

  • +4

You can see if your store is closing because its been removed from the website already. Also added Dianella WA to the list.

  • I think Hamilton vic is closing down too

  • I was always surprised by the amount of EB games in the area, pretty much every shopping centre has one. I am a bit shock that out of the area the Blacktown one would be closing because of how big the Westpoint is compared to Plumpton, Stanhope Gardens, Seven Hills, Winston Hills etc.

  • +6

Read it as ACT - Marijuana Park

    • Will be renamed at the end of the month

  • -6

EBgames is not diversified enough. They should invest in developing games too.

    • +3

      That's probably just as risky….

One bomb can destroy a company.

      • -2

High risk and high return. With current model, EB games will be gone for sure sooner or later. I like physical copies, but I don’t think it will last long.

        • +4

Zing was the strategy they are taking. They probably still need to close some as mentioned they've got too many in close vicinity. I actually recall this being discussed months ago.

          • +2

@scuderiarmani: Upvoted you m8 for the convo. I have a pessimistic view on that too. I think Zing has a weak business model because it’s niche market due to population, and their stock items don’t need a brick&mortar. Pop culture needs events and activities. Zing had none (even if they had, they aren’t doing it well).

    • +1

Ironically I do a bit of 'consulting' work for businesses. If I was them I'd be pushing the hardware side of the business a bit more and installing 'tech benches' for computer/console repairs in select stores. Could you imagine being able to buy a graphics card instore, get them to install it and setup the drivers? (For those who can't do it themselves).

Hell, they could even just collect them in store, have them couriered to a central workshop then courier them back out

      • +2

The problem is they operate under the Gamestop banner. They don't do IT related services, and if they do, good luck getting that up and running.

Can you imagine taking your PC to EB Games and getting them to do something with it?

        • +1

Hence why I said they could just be agents. It doesn't take terribly much to swap out a graphics card and assess total draw vs PSU output. The shit seems to work for harvey norman.

    • Not sure why I get downvoted for. I simply compared eb games with blockbuster and Netflix. Developing games doesn’t need to be AAA to start with. Something simple to start with will build the reputation. Eb games doesn’t own a console platform so replying others to sell games is too risky with trend of going digital.

  • +3

I don’t visit EB for 3 weeks and then this happens…

  • -1

    no store close in WA

  • +1

Oh wow my local og Rockdale store is closing down, that's a surprise. Been going to that store for over 13 years. The prices are high but it'll be sad to see it go.

  • Are they really closing down? i get emails about some stores closing down, but then they reopen with zing combined stores.

    • I think they might be. I’ve had emails in the past where a new combined EB/Zing is opening - those ones usually include a map of the centre to show where the existing EB and/or Zing stores are in relation to the new combined store.

  • +2

    Dandenong is closing down

  • no vic stores closing down?

  • +1

The stores listed as closing down have even been pulled from their Find a Store page, so it's not possible to check stock online.

  • *#$@! This isn't a good sign. Have around $500 worth of gift cards to use.
