Wouldn't it be a better idea to write AEST in the title? 7-8PM AEST.

    • +14

      or maybe 9AM-10AM Zulu

    • -7

pfft… who cares about "WA Time"? Dont they want to secede from the rest of Australia anyway? Let them :).

and for $5 more, you can buy 2TB WD Green's from MSY any time any day (yeah its MSY, but still).

Website says for everyone to come back at a certain time…. hmm, I wonder what's going to happen then ;).

      • +1

2TB internal drive from MSY =/= 2TB external

This is a pretty good deal. Only USB 2.0 though. I paid $110~ for a 2TB USB 3.0. I can't actually take advantage of the speeds yet, but at least I'm future proofing myself :p

        • +1

post updated…. when I posted there was no mention of it being an external drive. no brand or anything.

if this is indeed an external seagate, it IS a good deal.

    • +1

Wow I cant believe the time was added. I live in WA! I write WA time. I hope future posts with AEST in the title will now also include WST…

Or 7pm - 8pm AEST Edit - Beaten to the punch!

  • Would this be internal or ext? Do they even sell internal drives??

    • -3

yeah they dont sell internal, my money on it being a dodge brand like samsung though

      • They're only stock WD and Seagate.

My money is on this one (the cheapest atm)

        • +2

Thats showing free delivery ATM but as always:

"it's only a bargain if you wanted it in the first place"

So I need to think about whether I want this or stay with my decision only to buy USB3 from now on…

  • Would be cheap either way internal or external. Doubt they would sell internal though.

  • Weird…. I've been getting "Website maintenance" for the whole week when I type in http://www.dicksmith.com.au

I'd suggest a bad DNS entry. Open a command prompt and type 'nslookup dicksmith.com.au'.

You should be a result saying the IP address is 203.26.178.93.

If it's something different, you can try to run 'ipconfig /flushdns' to remove any cached entries. If that doesn't fix it, I'd suggest calling your ISP.

      • Cheers mate. Will try that

        • +1

I'd bet it's an error page your browser is caching. Suggest a CTR+R or COMMAND+R to resolve.

    • You wouldn't happen to be with aaNet would you? If so, it might possibly be a proxy issue.

      • Nah.. looks like the google browser cache was having a fit. I just cleared it and it is now working

  • The deal doesn't mention if this will be online only or instore only offer…

    • +2

There is a red tab on the right corner. Online exclusive

    • +2

online only, so the radio says

  • -3

Someone has insider info knowing the price will be $79 in advance.

    • +5

      Or perhaps it was this?

Was announced on the radio this morning

  • +1

USB 3.0 would be hoping for a bit much yeah?

  • Will it be free postage and will you be able to buy more than 1?

    • +14

Will our discount-seeking heroes get their deal, or will the dastardly Dick Smith dash their plans? And will that little girl down the road get her dollar coin from the tooth fairy?

Please don't sandwich an episode of the renovators in between..

Free delivery. I'm pretty sure there is a limit of 2 per customer.

  • Their site will down during that period of time.

    Like COTD.

    • +2

But this is Dicksmith, owned by Woolworths, the biggest food chain supermarket in Aussie…

If their site is down like COTD… perhaps we should throw rotten Woolies apples at them…

      • Because they have on and off problem during last weeks.

  • Um… is this today?

    • Im assuming so, today is Thursday.

    • no, it's "this evening" as OP says

      • +2

Glad you figured that one out, however "this evening" is today. And today is Thursday.

    • +9

  • Its a good deal…
Don't know about you guys but I rathar wait for a bargain on 2TB USB3 - hopefully don't have to wait too long…

  • oh well im out. needed usb 3.0

  • hope the warranty is atleast 3 years.

    • Why? A 2tb hard drive will be almost worthless in 3 years.

      • Ideally entrust your personal 2TB of data to a decent drive that atleast the manufacturer is confident in. Think of 1 year Elements vs 5 year Mybook Elite, and that drive failure would have you looking at around $2000 for data recovery.

  • Anyone know what is the actual internal drive model number? Is it possible to take it apart and use it for the ProLiant N36L microserver - cheapest 2TB WD Green SATA3 that I found is $85 from MSY.

    • 2TB drives from MSY were $81 2 weeks ago. AUD shift caused a price rise. If you're patient, the price will get down to $80 in the next month. And there are routinely offers on here for 2TB drives (internal - no screwing around) around and below $80.

But yes, it should be possible to remove it from the case and use it. However, it will void the warranty, obviously. And there might also be a small chance that the connector on the HDD isn't a physical SATA connection, but USB, as some 2.5" models have been found to have..

      • MSY is selling $109 for same as Dick Smith (Seagate Expansion 2TB) at the moment.
I guess your saying $81 was the internal drive?

    • hahaha same reason i want this drive…

      bought a 2tb yesterday… 3 bays to go…

    • Looking to do this also, any chance you reckon….thought they changed to a usb interface on the hdd itself?

      • I think that is western digital

    • Here is a link to dissambling the unit:

http://skeena.net/blog/Seagate%20ST310005EXA101-RK%209SE2A4-… which is the 1 TB version of this deal.

The drive in that one is listed as model# ST31000528AS and is SATA 7200rpm, specs in link below.

      http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=20b92d0ca8dc…

I would expect that the 2TB version would have the same SATA connection, though unable to confirm.

      • actually the barracuda does not come bigger than 1TB

        • Good to know, tried to get as much info as I could. Nay idea which drive it could be?

Yet to find any info stating that it isn't a SAT drive though.

  • no clear shipping information on the page.

  • This is a really good deal IMO. But if you're buying 2 terabytes of storage you're going to want more than 20MB/s write speeds when backing up 500gb + of data. Its worth paying the extar $20/30 for a 2tb that can get 80MB/s + write speeds.

    • like what?

USB 2.0 can handle 60MBS and this drive is apparently a 7200rpm im assuming a barracuda so what would be faster a usb 3.0? link?

I have a external seagate 1TB looks the same as this but i thought it had a drive speed of 5400 and found it to be quite slow.

      • 60MB/sec is not achievable with USB 2.0. It's not a very efficient way of doing mass storage - from the Wikipedia USB article:

Typical hi-speed USB hard drives can be written to at rates around 25–30 MB/s, and read from at rates of 30–42 MB/s, according to routine testing done by CNet.[58] This is 70% of the total bandwidth available.

USB 3.0 uses a more efficient protocol as well as 5 Gb/sec signalling, which gives higher transfer rates than any current hard disk can sustain - fastest streaming reads from a modern disk are ~ 120MB/sec. Some SSDs may go faster on 6Gb/sec SATA than USB 3.0.

Someone should start an ozbet website so we can bet on how fast these websites will crash with deals like these :)

    • Oh well… we'll find out soon. What was your bet anyway?

      • can we find out how much traffic you get in this hour?

        • +2

Yeah we'll have a look at what we can share. We usually measure active concurrent sessions rather than visitors.

      • About 30 seconds- Sorry, we have encountered a problemWe're really sorry, but for some reason we were unable to process your last request. It could be that we are making some site updates or a temporary site glitch.

        • refresh. it'll come through eventually.

          Order Confirmed! :D

        • There is a throttle to effectively to slow the number of sessions created so people can still get through the checkout. If you refresh you should get in without too many problems.

        • Sweet I got through after a few refreshes. Thanks

  • If you open the external box there will be a SATA drive in there that can be used with HP Micro server. Not a bad option.

  • Here we go..
