  • Should I cancel my RXV485B from Amazon $345.00?
    And get this instead?

    • Do you have speakers?

      • No

        • +2

I'd be listening to these in person before I purchased anything

    • No. Find some speakers with the difference.

  • +7

The party light seals the deal

  • Noob alert: isnt this AVR only 5.1? How will it support 2 subs?

    Cheers!

    • +1

Should be fine running a splitter if not….

    • +2

You're correct. The receiver only has a single sub out port (https://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_…). The sub itself only has one input port as well, so you'd need some kind of splitter to share the signal between the two (https://au.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/3/807403/w…).

I recently purchased the NS-51 speaker pack and all the components came in separate product boxes, so I don't know if such a splitter would be provided with the pack.

It would also be worth noting that if you do split a single channel, you wouldn't be able to take advantage of separate positional output to the individual subs that receivers with multiple outputs would offer.

      • +11

This is why you don't normally worry about multiple subs - because bass frequencies are not very positional. You don't normally need stereo sub sound.

        • +1

Yeah I've never understood the point of .2 when you can tell where the bass is co.ing from anyway.

          • +3

@brendanm: It's useful to make up for room deficiencies.

I personally don't like overpowered bass though, but often a room can need an extra source as it has a bit of a vacuum in a given area.

            • +2

              @scuderiarmani:

It's useful to make up for room deficiencies.

this. Most people can’t imagine the impact of boundaries on (invisible) waves.

    • +2

I have seen these at the good guys. They will have a rca y-splitter on the sub pre-out.
As for advantages, a single sub can have dead spots and resonance in a room. A second sub can eliminate these deficiencies.
Even with subs with .2 output, they don’t really do much in apart from providing additional pre out for sub. (Source, I have a Yamaha v685 7.2 receiver)

  • Would there be any value in taking out the subs and 2 rear speakers and selling off the rest - receiver, towers and centre speaker?

    • Can anybody weigh in?

I currently have an Onkyo TX-RZ710 (7.2) and with some very well rated front and centre speakers, some rears from a previous setup, but no height speakers or sub(s).

I was looking to part this out to keep the rears in this system (as heights) and hook up either 1 or both of the subs as whag I am currently using is very sub-par (pun totally intended).

I've been a bit lost for direction and as such I've just let it sit unattended given how good my front speakers are but I'd like to finally round out my setup!

  • +2

5.1 system is so much cheaper. Should consider it.

    • That's without amp, works out about the same

  • I just bought LG B9 and I now looking to complete my set up with a receiver and some speakers, and as a newbie im not sure which one to get.

Is Dolby Atmos system really good? Which one should i get for less than 1.5k?

    • +2

Please note, this is not Dolby Atmos setup. The receiver with this is v485, which isn’t Atmos capable. Atmos needs a Atmos capable receiver. And they are always 7.1 channels or more. In Yamaha, this means v585 or above.
As for the worth, it depends. If you have Atmos enabled source (Disney+, Netflix or 4K blu ray discs with atoms capable blu ray player) and a room where you can set up the .2 height speakers needed, then I would say it’s worth it. The expanse added by Atmos makes a bigger impact in movies.
For the record I use Atmos setup with the “ceiling bounce” speakers, which is arguably the worst way to enjoy Atmos. But even then I feel it adds quite a bit to the movies which has Atmos.

      • Also ensure your TV (or whatever you get Netflix through) can natively decode Dolby Atmos. https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/dolby-atmos-sound… - you're fortunate that the C9 does.

Technically you do need eARC and HDMI 2.1 on whatever sounbard/surround setup you get to go with the C9 to get maximum benefits but am keen to know if anyone has real world experience in detecting the difference vs normal ARC and HDMI. If you think the diff between eARC and ARC Atmos is splitting hairs, then the Samsung Q90R seems to be a good option for you. Rear speakers mean at least rear surround is real, rather than relying on bouncing off walls and tables.

If you want the very best, CES is on right now and LG have already (pre-show) flagged a new surround setup that includes Atmos speakers, rear speakers and eARC / HMDI 2.1. Though could be a few months before it comes on sale here.

    • +1

I would wait a few months for an updated receiver that is HDMI 2.1 48Gbps which matches your TV.
The reason why they're many specials on many receivers now is that they want to flog off old and in with the new HDMI 2.1 receivers

  • +2

Bit more expensive, but you can get the Blockbuster 5500 for $1246 from TGG Commercial if you have access. Which is otherwise $1499 at TGG currently based off $1999 RRP.

Honestly not too sure on the difference other than it being 5.1, but i think you get better floor standing speakers?

Miss out on the party light though..

    • +1

Blockbuster 5500 has far better speaker configuration overall. Floor standers and centre channel are far better speakers. Not sure on surrounds though. The subwoofer is the same, though the 5500 comes with just 1.
