Definitely the way to go. We got an airbnb 2mins from Waikiki Beach had car rental and parking, $140 for 3 days.
Scenic drive from south (koko crater) to the north shore is amazing. Stop at the various lookout points, visit the temple where Jin and sun got married, kualoa ranch.
Driving in Hawaii is the best, speed limits are so lax there. Cops go 25mph above the limit and so does everyone else.
Yeah I love Waikiki, plenty to do there and much more options for a nice night out. Agreed on the driving and route as well, there's also the windy lookout as you come back around to the south side of you do the full circuit and don't forget Giovanni's shrimp truck! 😋
I hired a convertable Camero SS (bumblebee colours) and had a great day driving up there a few trips back, I also almost got kicked off the raptors at Kualoa Ranch as well :P

This is the place from Forgetting Sarah Marshall! Just don't expect it to be that nice. I've stayed here (albeit several years ago) and as mentioned above it's a little long in the tooth unless things have changed significantly
We’ve stayed here 3 times over the last 10 years, it’s nice still. They have spent a little bit on it in the last 5 years, new restaurant, etc. Rooms are fairly consistent mind you.
Its a great resort especially for surfing and the kids private beach. But rooms getting a bit long in the tooth for what you pay
