RIP New South Welshfolk :( the two hour train ride from Sydney would have been softened were it free.

I thought NSW cancelled new years cos bush fires.

That two hour train ride would probably turn into five coming home on new years day. If you're heading to Sydney to see the fireworks stay safe. The last time I went to Milsons point there was nothing but brawls and riot police. Happy new year!

To be fair, none of them can pronounce 'public transport' in Welsh.

  • +2

    Wow, that’s actually great!

Too bad I’ll be sleeping in the comforts of my bed

  • FYI, it’s to encourage people not to drink and drive.

    • They'll do that the day after anyway

    • It should be free all the time, they should just tax the businesses that rely on public transport for their employees and customers. It’d save lives if free transport were normalized.

Why is there a picture of Sydney when Sydney isn't even featured…

Probably because SyDnEy iS ThE bEsT pLaCe To gO

      • Cringe

    • Comment of the year!!!!!! You WIn

      • Haha, being this is about free public transport I thought it would be easier linking to an article where all major cities are mentioned rather then choosing one of the QLD, SA or NT public transport sites.

  • NSW - "Let's Jack the price next year"

  • Sydney is expecting a million people. Why encourage more?

    • they're not on the list?

    • Why not?

  • Please add trams to Gold Coast

    • Thanks, updated.

I am not trying to be the fun police, but honestly I cant even think of attending the fireworks in Sydney when Australia and particularly NSW burns. Its been over a month now with lives (including wild life) have lost, houses burnt, and we are in the worst drought that even the duck ponds have dried up! I fear 2020 could be worse than 2019! I wish the people worse affected make it through this very difficult time… I mean no offense to those who wish to attend the fireworks.

      I'm prepared for the downvotes.

I'm not sure I understand the connection between the New Year's fireworks display and our local bushfires. Why would it be inappropriate to celebrate New Year's after a fire? Were the fires caused by fireworks?

Cancelling an event that brings millions joy would just be a waste of money. That spend on fireworks also comes back in induced economic activity to fund things like services to the community (and possibly disaster payments).

      • Exactly, the fireworks display is obviously paid for well in advance so might as well keep them on for this year at least so people can enjoy them.

I get what you mean, but what about tourist and locals who paid thousands of dollars for flights, hotels, restaurants just to come to Sydney and watch the fireworks? Do they get a refund??

E.g Shangri-la is charging $1420 per head in their restaurant for new years eve

NSW transport will never match this. real shame.

Transport NSW makes a fortune on this day with road blocks everywhere and the only way to get to the city by train - they make millions… it’s a profit decision not a welfare decision they make. Agree, it’s sick though by forcing people to use public transport

      • Some people will cry about literally everything.

You cry because they don’t give you free buses? Since when it’s your right?

        • IMHO… if all states can do it then why not NSW? It is the biggest night for Sydney City.
I am sure we have seen so many public transport horror stories whole year. May be this is the once of pay back to the customers, I know we all can afford the train ticket but it is their gesture which counts.

          • @sydneybargainer: IMO other states should stop doing it.
People really CAN AFFORD IT, they just losing money by making them free. Money that you and I will end up paying.

  • Adelaide metro do this every year

  • How can you find out if the fireworks are cancelled where you are?
And if they are having a laser show or something else instead, or just nothing?

(and shouldn't they all be cancelled really, but anyway)

  • Anyone in SA been to the Semaphore fireworks? How early should I get there for the midnight one?
