    +1 just for the effort!

      Indeed.

In my head this is the work of an OzBargainer in the market themselves and who has a nice big excel document in the works with each model, best price and feature comparisons.

  • Confused which avr i should get, Marantz SR5013 vs Dneon X3500H. Denon has a slight edge in a whooping 5w extra in 2ch mode and has a slight more advanced Audyssey software. Hmmm decisions.

    • +3

Made by the same anyway… I had a Denons hdmi inputs fail on me, never had issues with 3 different Marantz units.

      • +2

        Love my Marantz slimline AVR

      • my denon x3100w had the hdmi board fail on me too, but luckilly it was still under the 2yr warranty. only reason i had to get rid of it was no hdcp 2.2

otherwise it was a great receiver

ive never owned marantz, but the only reason i didnt go with them is because there were no local retailers that would do a decent price on marantz. Now im using a yamaha rx-a3080 which kills the denon, but its in a completely different price bracket.

        • Thanks for insights. Will take it into consideration.

    • i love my Denon AVR-X4500B, never have issues

      • I heard that Denon runs hot and needs adequate ventilation. Does your unit runs hot or just warm just like an electronic unit should?

        • +1

well, it gets hot very quickly, but i never have any single crash.
i have even tried to let the projector runs movie for 3 days, still good.

  • Great effort.Thank you

  • Brilliant work. Kudos!
Disappointing to see there have been no nice deals on Yamaha 1080/5 2080/5 though.

  • Could use a 9.2 unit, though unsure if I can be bothered adding another 2 Atmos Speakers…. Extra power would be nice though….

    • -7

      Could use a 9.2 unit,

For what? How many 9.2 channel-encoded audio streams do you have to listen to?

Extra power would be nice though….

So get bigger, more powerful 7.2/5.1 speakers.

      • +1

For what? How many 9.2 channel-encoded audio streams do you have to listen to?

Dolby surround mode upmixes to whatever you setup is regardless of what the original audio is encoded in.

      • +6

Lol get bigger speakers for more power? Are you all there…. I'm currently using slimline Marantz receivers at around 50wpc… Speakers are completely irrelevant to this.

And ever heard of Atmos 5.2.4? That's what 9 channels are for….

So if you don't know anything about audio I'd suggest you don't comment. Or maybe I'll take your advice and go find me some 10,000w speakers to get more power!

        • +2

Additionally to this, you can also setup Zones into other rooms whilst keeping your main setup using the same receiver.
Usually the more channel receivers and directly proportional to the cost and also comes with better DAC, chips, connectors more input/output/pre-out options etc.
          Cheers

I would wait for at least CES 2020 in a couple of weeks as its likely HDMI AVR's will be announced.

    • Silly question but what's the difference?

    • This! That’s why they are flogging off these units cheap. Wait a few months and get 48Gbps receivers rather than last gen 18Gbps

      • I'm looking to update my old Marantz SR6007. Lost the HDMI ports in a thunderstorm. Everything else still works. Think I'll wait to see what the new upcoming models will offer. Normally the new Yamaha come early in the year. Then Marantz/Denon, which we don't get released here untill late in the year.

        • I would be patient if you can live with your Marantz depending on your setup.
If you have a TV source, then you can go video-bypass TV Toslink output to receiver input however the limitations are 2.1 channel sound.
If you have a Coaxial output from another source, then you can get up to 5.1 channel output from receiver surround sound with limited codecs.

Don't get sucked in to these cheapie $200 sup-par 4K HDR whiz-bang receivers where they have entry level video & sound processing. They are only good for small rooms and mediocre speaker system it comes with.
The input HDMI into your receiver's signal has to go through the internal Video processing chip of the receiver then output to TV.

    • I'd also be weary of buying the first generation of them too…

HDMI is such a pain in the ass these days…. it was nice with analogue receivers that could last decades… now 2-3 years and they are out of date…

      • The catch word is HDMI 2.1 "48Gbps" and you won't go wrong.
The Yamaha RXV x85 receivers on forums state it is HDMI 2.1 but it isn't as it has the flavour (HDCP 2.3 where HDMI 2.1 implements)
The LG B/C9 OLED TV has HDMI 2.1 and now becoming Nvida G-sync compatible so it'll integrate well.
        Cheers

    any slimline?

  • Really afrer a deal on a decent 5.1/5.2 denon or Yamaha if there are any out there?

  • So which one did op buy?

  • ive only ever setup my self up with 2 x floor standing speakers (stereo only, no sub as the speakers themselves do enough bass for me) so am thinking for my next amp, to get a stereo one. any recommendations on whats a good one for < $500?

    • +1

      Onkyo A-9010
      Or
      Cambridge AXA35
Both a little bit over $500, but under $600. Current sales would help.

I would go for Onkyo as I don't love Cambridge amplifier sound.

      • Thanks for that. I just noticed they only have rca inputs, no hdmi?

        • The updated version of Onkyo with some digital inputs is A-9130. It has coax and optical input.

I have an AV setup and a stereo setup. In my stereo setup I put the hdmi cable in to the TV and optical/coax in to the amp. Still sounds amazing. The other choice is to put all hdmi in to the TV and then run optical from TV to the amp. Set the TV to be using external speakers.

I have Marantz PM6006, great sound for its price (especially if you can get it on sale).

Floor standers are often quite efficient and can handle low power amps. If you want something compact there are plenty of small ones, smsl on Amazon has done great for me. Under $200.

  • Roast time - which one do I get if my partner is always telling me to 'lower it!!?' :)

  • Looking for the best price on a RX-V485

    Anyone seen any deals going?

    • $495 at Selby, Todds and HN

      • $345 at Amazon AU and HN

  • What’s everyone experience/view on the Sony STR-DN1080? Enough umph for music (floorstanders) and surround setup?

    • All of these, including the Sony, will give enough volume to annoy others :)

    • -1

I currently have the 1070 and before that I had the 1060. Both superb receivers that stick it to the more 'pure' hi fi brands IMHO. Running mine with five Dali speakers and a Klipsch sub, including floor standing front left and right. The 1070 is more than capable of driving them at a level beyond human endurance…

Also has really good pure direct mode for analogue audio if that's your thing. I like the music performance better than my previous Yamaha amp.

My only complaint is that in Sony's usual idiotic way, there are some completely unnecessary and arbitrary limitations in the software. Specifically, there's no 2.1 mode for music, which sucks, and there's no ability to play certain things in zone 2 or certain combinations of things in different zones (e.g. no Spotify in zone 2 but TV in zone 1… Why Sony, why?).
