Cheers OP this will be perfect for checking my transmission oil temp when doing a refill

    • +1

I want to know if this can measure exhaust temps. Not sure of the range

      • +6

Apologies for getting here late, the Amazon description does not seem to be showing all the data we have written there :(
        Accuracy: ±0.1°C
        Temp Range: 32 to 42.9°C
        Batteries: 2 x AAA

If this changes anything please cancel your order through Amazon or if it has shipped send us a message!

        • Thanks it's still within the range I need

    • +2

In all seriousness, the reflectivity of a surface is generally what makes infrared difficult to use accurately.
I know metals are an issue, not sure if a shiny liquid would also be.

    • Perfect! Once it comes into range your fingers will be safe!

  • +7

Does anyone have hands on experience with the accuracy or reliability of this device? I can't seem to find any reviews.

  • +2

Thanks op. Do you guys know if this needs an additional plastic cover to be purchased?

  • +6

Does anyone know what battery type this takes?

    Not keen on button batteries.

    • +1

      2 x AAA

      • Great! Usually button batteries go up to 10 years with AAA's creating so much more turnover with leakage damaging just about every remote control out there. Mum used to stick the "mercury" up our bum! Later we were trained to keep it in the armpit. Ear type still seem to be standard for infants. I have a genuine Flir with a 0.1 Kelvin resolution so no droplet of liquid escapes after voiding. Your choice.

  • +5

    How accurate is it exactly?
What is the expected margin of error? +/-1°?

The plastic cover question is important as some models won't work unless a particular plastic ear probe cover is attached.

    Some many questions unanswered…

There are quite a few of these on amazon and they seem to be rebranded, i purchased the one from Weallnersse. If these do happen to actually be the same device i would highly avoid, gave me low readings several times i was actually running a temp, returned the product.

    • Has been confirmed previously Astivita stuff are rebranded with their logo stamped on them including the scales, Bluetooth speakers and oil defusers

No reviews and google does not know what AstiVita is. Looks dodgy.

    • +12

FFS, just click the "astivita" link under "related stores" above.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/astivita.com.au

4 pages of deals, and an active, helpful rep here.

Also, it is an Australian public company listed on the ASX. Your google skills suck.

    • -3

They rebadged other products and sell them on Amazon. Clearly your don't use Amazon or you would be aware of all the sellers that have their own "brands".

    • +5

I admit that I did not research this brand properly. My bad.

Still, would not buy this thermometer without any product reviews.

  • +8

as much as i want to buy this cos its cheap but would not take a risk for my little bubba.

  • +2

Temperature accuracy aside, how do these differ from the regular gun shaped infrared thermometers used for checking cooking surface temps etc?

    • +5

The scale of these is focused on the narrow range of human temperatures, while my gun one has a huge range, so the difference been 37 degs and 38degs is more questionable on the larger scale one. That is 1% error over a few hundred degrees is much bigger than 1% error over a 20 degree range.

    • I'm fairly certain these 'human' thermometers do some form of compensation to account for the skin isolating the heat (the external of your forehead is not 37 degrees). Some of them have two modes: for persons and for environmental/room temperature mode. When you measure a person in the 'environment' mode, you get a lower reading than 37 degrees.

  • -2

I have no experience with this brand but I would stay away. My experience with cheaper brands is they are inaccurate. Measuring the same ear twice gives over 1 degree difference which means you can't tell if they are having a fever. The only one which I found which measures accurately is the Braun one… Same one they use in hospitals.

    • +1

These don't measure your inner ear temperature you simply point them at the forehead and push the button. We have started using these types at work and I was a bit sceptical of their accuracy but they seem to work fine. In saying that I have no experience with this brand.

    • Not saying that this particular item is good but any thermometer if you take more measuring in a row they will give slightly different results, regardless price and brand. They are designed to see if you have a fever and 38 or 38.5 it does not make a great difference, you'll know you need a tablet or two or take your bub to the doctor. Go see the Braun reviews on Amazon US and see yourself.

If my experience with the body scale from astavista is of any indication I'd stay away from this deal. The scale measures different depending on what part you are standing on, ie. The metal parts or the glass edge parts. I'm unsure if it makes any measurements via the metal parts or its just a calculator using your weight.

Anyhow weight is one thing but with something like this that you are depending on the accuracy to determine health status or the need to go to the hospital I'd probably aim for something with good reviews. Don't need to be expensive but at least accurate.

    • +4

It's kind of obvious. Yes, the metal parts are what you stand on. If you don't, how can it measure anything else but weight…

      • I mean the weight that shows when you stand on the metal part is different to the weight that shows when you stand on the glass part.

centre of gravity does not come in to play because I am standing on the same mirror position with my feet so my COG is in the middle.

Just for reference I have another scale that shows almost the same weight as the weight I get from the outer glass edge on the astivista. Which means I am more inclined to believe that figure, but that means the reading when I am on the metal part is inaccurate.

    • +1

The metal parts calculate body fat from conductance through your bare feet. Best to read the manual & maybe watch a video of use of similar body fat scales.

    • All scales will measure differently depending on where you place your centre of mass..

Before my kid was born this year, I did a lot of reading reviews of forehead thermometers on AmazonUSA and putting them through fakespot and review meta. My conclusion was they are all inaccurate and are too much of a risk to use with my kid’s health. This is in addition to having a lot of sponsored/fake reviews. I ended up buying a stick thermometer from the chemist.

    • +1

We started with a stick thermometer and the little one wouldn't let it anywhere near her mouth. Bought an IR thermometer from ebay and have been happy with it's performance and we can actually get readings compared to not being and to use the stick type. It can be touchy with positioning as only the forehead provides a good reading, the top and sides of the head are much more variable.

I'm not disagreeing, just providing a different situation. All kids are different so go with what works.

In my non-medical opinion, being within a degree is good enough and it's easy to baseline the IR thermometer off my own temperature and it has calibration settings.

tlldr; ease of use makes a less accurate device more useful for us.

      • which gun did you buy from ebay? interested
tossing up between oral stick and ir

      • and the little one wouldn't let it anywhere near her mouth.

You were using it wrong. Just ask any nurse what is the easier place to insert it.
And once you've changed a few nappies, it should not bother you.

Personally, kissing the forehead will tell me if baby has a fever.
And if they are strong enough to fight off the thermometer, they are not hot enough for a febrile seizure.

  • This deal has a high temperature

  • just bought very similar like this from Aldi clearance $15. Aldi version can talk and have heart rate measurement

  • My prime subscription expire d last week, These deals are killing me

    • +1

You should be happy that you saved thousands.

      • Fair enough. I did saved like $80 worth I would spend if I still had prime lol

  • Grabbed this - thanks OP.

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one.

  • Are laser guided ones similar? Plenty on eBay for $10

    • My laser one I use for cooking and workshop activity temperatures. Not accurate enough at human temp scale. Unless the ones you mean are designer for human scale. Hard to say with no link.
